CNN has sued the government to get the name of the jurors in the Manafort case: CNN Sued The Government For Names, Addresses Of Manafort Jurors

I'm not a fan of this at all, especially given the judge said he is under protection after receiving credible threats, and his reasoning for not giving the names out is the judge can only assume the jurors would receive these threats as well: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...received-threats-under-protection/1021458002/

Why would anybody go on jury duty when CNN has now shown they are perfectly willing to risk the lives of jurors?

Why put their names out there except to make them targets of intimidation?

After the trial, maybe.

In today's atmosphere? I wouldn't put their names out period. In fact it should be standard policy that such names and addresses are withheld period. Hell, I'd prefer that their faces weren't ever even seen.

Outside of an attempt by FNN to intimidate the jury, what other purpose can be served by releasing their names and addresses?

I completely agree with this. As well, We Must Protect All Involved, beginning with the Judge who has had his Life threatened.

This includes the Defense team, the Prosecution team; everyone involved in bringing those to Justice.

Please Do Not Broad Brush CNN on everything else CNN does.

I was about to write another post about the utter insanity of the 24/7 cable news networks last night and how they were aiding efforts to manipulate this trial and decided against it. Sure enough these posts write themselves. The 24/7's should just drop any pretext to NEWS. They are entertainment. The only news they offer is pieces taken from the newspapers or periodicals. Yet under the pretext of news they pull away at the threads of democracy almost as hard ad Donald does. Frankly I am disgusted with the whole miserable mess of celebrity government from Donald down through the whole disgusting mess of celebrity media so desperate for ratings they are capable of just anything for a ratings point.

There is simply not enough news in the day for 24/7 news. There never was! Remember the event that kicked CNN into high gear? It was the first Iraq war. What did we do with the novelty of 24/7 coverage? We waited around with the reporters for hours on end waiting to see what 24/7 coverage of a war zone would look like? What do we do today? We watch them fill the time with every sort of effort to keep us interested while they and we wait for something to happen followed by hour upon hour of journalistic garbage that in some cases is just rampant propaganda. That problem is exacerbated by the fact that they need advertisers and TV advertisers base their entire structure on ratings. So, how do they fill 24 hours on a news platform, get ratings and get advertisers....They fill it WITH GARBAGE! The absolute worst thing that ever happened to news in this country is the 24/7's without question. I wish Rupert Merdoch were never born for one thing.

Facebook is not news, twitter is not news and the 24/7's are news for about two of the 24 hours in a day....just about exactly what it always was before we had 24/7's stuck with trying to find a way to make their entire revenue stream from a platform that was never designed to do that.

Ever since being a kid, I've literally never understood the point of putting juror names out there. There seems to be very limited upside, if any, and the potential downside is extensive. As a society, juror names are just not something we need to know.

Since there is no other 'news' reason to focus attention on a republicants are (all?) evil crooks story they need to invent one. This is a case of CNN creating news - stirring up a side issue to create a need to endlessly cover the Manafort trial. Trump just must be guilty (of ???) because Manafort once worked for Trump and he is now an alleged criminal for *gasp* long past financial misdeeds having nothing at all to do with Trump.

Try as I might to find any upside to this, I think we all agree on this one, that this is not a good move by the media (Not just CNN btw). I don't understand their argument, unless it's they don't trust the jury to make the right decision so they want to interrogate them after the fact... Which in a statement, "Not cool, bro."

CNN has no scruples when it comes to getting or creating a story.

I can't think of any valid reason why they should know the names and addresses of the jurors, especially with the judge getting threats.

Not really, a beat down of jurors for "opinion crimes" will create page views and that is all that counts.

The following essay sheds light on the central question asked in this thread: The right of access to juror names and addresses.

probably shouldn't release the names, as someone might do something stupid. i get the motivation. i have wondered if a Trumpist on the jury might nullify what looks to be an obvious conviction. however, if Manafort walks because of a Trump cult member, that's better than someone getting attacked.

We aren't talking about right of access to jurors in general, though. We're talking about a case where people's lives are literally being threatened.

Gosh its like CNN, The WaPo, AP, Buzzfeed etc are the enemy of the people or something.

How does CNN knowing the names of the jurors forward the cause of better government?

How does CNN going out attempting to file the following story mean anything worthwhile:
"Hi, we are here in front of Manafort Juror XYZ's house to ask her why the jury voted ABC and why she voted ABC."

Who the f--k cares you blithering 24/7 gorillas. Oh I know who cares, the ever needing to be amused ever interested in reality programing idiots in this country. I don't care what they want. They don't care about justice. They don't care about good government. They only care about being entertained!

I see why you'd want such but it would create a whole knew problem. It would undermine the entire concept of "jury of your peers" as the jury could all be plants or some such other shenanigans.

Proving certain media groups don't care about getting the proper decision but prefer to get the decision they want. That's the only reason to get the names of the jurors, to intimidate and harass them.

I would be fine with a newspaper with investigative reporters petitioning for the names in an effort to determine if there was something about the jury in total that could be gleaned that might relate to their verdict. No names published, just an overview of the jury according to the WaPO on the editorial pages or in the national news section.

But we all know that is not what CNN is after. CNN is after exactly what I said they are after, getting a microphone shoved under a juror's mouth on camera. By the way, the 24/7 cable news networks would not know an investigative reporter if he hit them over the head with a frying pan!

You forgot the other side of the coin that is just, if not more, likely. That there are people on the jury who are Trump haters, through and through, and would choose guilty no matter what.

the thing is that he's obviously guilty.

The jury could be plants NOW. There are ways to secure the reliability of it. For example there's nothing stopping a juror from giving their take to the media after a trial ends thereby willingly releasing their names and faces. Plus since jurors are randomly picked via computer now a days that is another check. And other ways.
