One year on, Trump still fuels racial divide

WASHINGTON — There has been no reset, no moment of national healing. One year after blaming ‘‘both sides’’ for violent clashes between white supremacists and counter-protesters, President Trump still flirts with racially tinged rhetoric — and feels little blow-back from Republican leaders or GOP voters when he does. Black leaders and Democrats argue Trump’s tone and actions on race have gotten even worse in the months since the clashes in Charlottesville, Va. The result is a starkly segregated political landscape where there is scant punishment for racially loaded rhetoric and, at times, clear reward. Democrats are pinning their hopes of flipping control of Congress on mobilizing liberals and minorities, particularly black voters. And Republicans’ best chance of holding off a Democratic wave is strong turnout among the conservative white voters who helped sweep Trump into office and often cheer his willingness to dive into hot-button issues with racial overtones. Trump’s rise to power can be traced through a series of statements that invoke racial stereotypes. In 1989, he called for the death penalty for the Central Park Five, five black and Hispanic teenagers accused of raping and beating a white woman; they were later exonerated through DNA evidence, but Trump has suggested he still believes they’re guilty. For years, Trump promoted the lie that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya.

Over the past year, from his perch in the White House, he’s repeatedly questioned the intelligence of prominent black figures, including Representative Maxine Waters, a California Democrat, basketball star LeBron James and CNN anchor Don Lemon, whom he called ‘‘the dumbest man on television.’’ ‘‘One of the oldest strategies is to call into question the intellect of African-Americans,’’ said Mitch Landrieu, the former Democratic mayor of New Orleans. ‘‘It’s just sad and awful.’’ NAACP president Derrick Johnson said the black community has ‘‘never seen this level of tone deafness or this total disregard’’ from a modern American president. According to a CBS News poll taken in the days after the Charlottesville clashes, a wide share of Democrats — about 7 in 10 — said Trump’s policies encouraged racial division in the country, little different from a poll conducted earlier in the year. By comparison, more than 8 in 10 Republicans said the president’s policies either had no effect on race relations or encouraged unity. Trump’s job approval among blacks has shown little change, consistently stuck around 10 percent in most surveys. The White House did not respond to questions about whether Trump has any regrets about his handling of the Charlottesville protests or other racial rhetoric.

I've never before seen such overt bigotry and racism displayed by any other US president ..... regardless of birth state. Dismaying and disgusting.

Well, your report seems to be out of date.

Here's one from the NAACP posted 08/07/18:

Today, the NAACP released results from a new poll, conducted for the NAACP by the African American Research Collaborative and Latino Decisions, pulling data from voters in 61 of the nation’s most competitive midterm races.
https://americasvoice.org/press_rel...competitive-races-may-hinge-on-trumps-racism/

It shows in chart #2 that Trump's current approval rating among Black Americans is at 21%. That appears to be double the 10% figure quoted in your citation.

It also shows 50% among Whites, 35% among Latinos, 32% among Asians, and 43% among Native Americans.

So it appears Mr. Trump is actually telling the truth in this case.

I would't trust your Trumper polls if my life depended on it. Thankfully it doesn't.

Trump ... 2018's George Wallace.

Trump to his credit has brought a lot of blacks into the political process, which is good for our democracy.

Big credit to my man, JOHN JAMES:

Seriously, isn't this like the 6th thread created today on the same topic? We get it. The MSM wants to blame Trump for racism and a racial divide that was crafted my the MSM and DNC. Got it.

Ummm...you do know that NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People...right?

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is a civil rights organization in the United States, formed in 1909 as a bi-racial organization to advance justice for African Americans by a group, including, W. E. B. Du Bois, Mary White Ovington and Moorfield Storey.

So are you now claiming that the poll (which you clearly did not review) posted by the premier civil rights organization in the USA...is biased in favor of Mr. Trump?

If there is a racial divide in our country, it certainly was a problem before Trump was president.

Many people were disenfranchised under Obama

So anyone who criticizes someone who is black, means that person is a racist? We all know the real answer to that is "no", yet people continue to imply the opposite in the name of identity politics.

We all know that the responsibility for the racial divide that's taken place in our society over the last decade lies squarely at the feet of leftists and the democrats in Washington. They've played identity politics and used the race card to silence dissent ever since the election of Obama, and now we are all living with the consequences of that divisive strategy.

Things are only going to get worse unless the left decides to put the well being of American society ahead of their political aspirations.... and who really thinks that will ever happen?

He's one to watch! I really hope he wins.

You should probably stop reading articles by writers that lie to you.

One year after blaming ‘‘both sides’’ for violent clashes between white supremacists and counter-protesters,

This is a lie. Trump was blaming both sides for violent clashes between white supremacists and domestic terrorists. I'd blame both sides, too.

Seriously, isn't this like the 6th thread created today on the same topic? We get it. The MSM wants to blame Trump for racism and a racial divide that was crafted my the MSM and DNC. Got it.

Right, there was no racism before the Democratic party. Absolutely none at all. :lamo

If you believe Trump is racist, you will find your evidence. If you believe he isn't, you will see holes in that evidence. We all find what we look for.

Has racism affected policies? If so, which ones? The accusation of racism (along with hater) has been so worn out, so over used, and dragged out in almost every opportunity to outshout the next guy. It is crying wolf, on steroids. Nowadays, you can hardly say anything w/o being called hateful or racist.

So Trump called a few people who happen to be Black, stupid? He calls A LOT of people stupid, or low IQ, or what have you. White, black, purple, green ..... Trump throws his insults around indiscriminately. He doesn't care about political correctness, which, to be honest, can be refreshing. We're ALL sick of what you can say and can't say in this country of supposed free speech. Everyone needs to get a grip and get over it.

Japs??? India?

This is the lie certain people need to tell themselves.

The lie that racism prexists the Democratic party? How is that a lie? I'd love to see your "reasoning."
