The man who harassed a woman at a Chicago-area park for wearing a Puerto Rico shirt in the U.S. has been hit with two felony hate crime charges.

After the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the video, officials approved the charges against Timothy Trybus, 62, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Trybus, who was filmed repeatedly berating a woman for wearing a Puerto Rico T-shirt despite her pleas for him to leave her alone, was originally charged with misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Those charges were upgraded to hate crime charges, according to NBC News, and he was arrested again on Thursday.

Wth? Charged with a hate crime? This has got to be nothing more than some publicity stunt to say "Hey look! We Care! Cops are not the bad guys!". This case will be thrown out as it should be. Yes, the guy was a total dick and an ass. But a hate crime for expressing his 1st Amendment Rights? Oh hellz to the no.

My take is that if the first cop had done his job and separated the two parties none of this would have happened.

Yes, if the cop had tried to defuse the situation none of this would have happened. I don't doubt that. Regardless though, charging someone with a hate crime just for spewing idiotic bigotry? That is tyranny and a violation of his 1st Amendment Rights. I watched the video that the woman recorded. All 38 some odd minutes of it. Not once was the guy physical. Just vocal. There was no assault. Unless there was something that happened that the woman didn't record that we don't know about?

And exihibit # 1800937457395 in the case labeled "Americans have no ****ing clue what tyranny actually is".

Getting in deep **** because you are a moron and a bigot is not "tyranny".

Being bombed by your own air force, or being targeted by government sponsored death squads, on the other hand......is.

 Do you think tyranny really starts out with death squads and bombs? Or do you think that maybe it starts out with one small thing? Like a person being charged with a hate crime due to what he/she said.

The argument that it's "tyranny" for someone to have to pay for the consequences of their actions is a bad joke. If you choose to accost an American and attack them verbally on the basis of their ethnicity, you deserve to face the consequences of that choice. I have no sympathy for moronic racist thugs.

And no, this is not a "slippery slope" towards tyranny. Not even close.

Do you actually think charging people with hate crimes leads to tyranny?

You're right that its not tyranny for someone to face the consequences of their actions. However it IS tyranny for the government to try and silence speech that is not approved by arresting someone for what they say (unless its an incitement to violence, which was not the case here). That is the very thing that the 1st Amendment protects against.

I get that you have no sympathy for racists thugs. I don't either. However I AM Very protective of MY Rights. And if the government is willing to ignore one persons Rights then why wouldn't they be willing to ignore MY Rights? Or yours? You may not like it but this is certainly a slippery slope action on the part of the cops here. And people like you who won't stand up for someone else's Rights just because you disagree with them is part of what makes it a slippery slope.

I do not know of any tyranny that started with someone being charged with a hate crime, though some have started with someone committing a hate crime.

The bigot committed assault and disorderly conduct. Those are crimes. He is a criminal, not some innocent law-abiding citizen

A Class 3 felony because it occurred in a park - 720 ILCS 5/12-7.1

2-5 year sentence w/ fine of up to $25k - https://www.avvo.com/legal-guides/ugc/illinois-felony-classes

Seems a little harsh for being a drunk asshole but it's a whole new world out there and we now know that people suffer irreparable brain damage from verbal abuse. I know, back in the day it was all "sticks and stones" but we're enlightened now and we know that sticks and stones are free speech while free speech is PTSD causing trauma.

Where was the assault?

Where was the assault?

I think you are confused about the definition of assault.

It’s not physical contact. That’s battery.

Assault is someone making a threat that may lead to physical confrontation, and some guy coming at someone, directly against the persons clearly stated wishes (stay away from me! Officer, please restrain this man!) is the very definition of assault.

It starts with people being accosted in their daily business for wearing the "wrong" shirt. Or being from the "wrong" place or the "wrong" colour or religion.

My take is that if the first cop had done his job and separated the two parties none of this would have happened.

And if the woman hadn't worn a provocative anti-American shirt none of this would have happened.

If she'd been honoring the Stars and Stripes with her shirt instead of Puerto Rico the man would have been her buddy.

Assimilate. Is that such a hard word to comprehend?

The ridiculous charges against the drunk are indicative of the power of the new BLM/Commie/Socialist political faction.

The charges will be thrown out as groundless, but they serve to mollify the black mobs for now.

That's the way things are done these days.

How is a Puerto Rico flag anti-American? Puerto Ricans are Americans. Is the flag of Texas anti-American?
Jesus. I'm Canadian. Am I allowed to wear a maple leaf flag in the US or would that be anti-American?

Like a real American Citizen?

Boy...you must really hate these guys:

A provocative anti-American shirt?

OMFG... Puerto Rico IS part of America...

If she'd been honoring the Stars and Stripes with her shirt instead of Puerto Rico the man would have been her buddy.

Why would she want this ignorant POS to be her buddy?
