This list was compiled from racist incidents involving white women harassing minorities over the last few months. But the uptick in this kind of behavior, particularly by white conservative women started right around the time Trump first announced his candidacy in 2015. I'm interested in this trend because I have a theory that white women may be the reason that racism is still a huge problem in this country since they are ones that usually raise the children. Historically, southern women were the reason the civil war went on for as long as it did and were largely responsible for pushing the "lost cause".

You'd be more accurate (and believable) if you said "the uptick in (the media reporting) of this type of behavior started around the time Trump announced his candidacy."

Because once Trump announced, MSM went crazy hunting for even the smallest little tales that showed racism agaisnt minorities and tried to link it to Trump's candidacy. Now, they (and you) attempt to link it to his Presidency.

Since you're sleuthing this thing out, could you please give the uptick (or downtick) of black women harassing whites? We'll need that to put your tale in perspective.

The media may help expose this behavior but it didn't create it. I've already explained why I'm only posting white women behaving badly and if time allows I will add more from previous years and even decades going all the way back to the civil war. If you want to start your own list of men or minorities on another thread then be my guest...I welcome the comparison. However, this thread is about racist incidents involving white women in particular because they seem to be in the lead over men and minorities going on racist rants in public...and I'd like to know if my theory has any validity because if white women are at the heart of the problem then maybe we can discuss possible causes and solutions.

OP-er, the list you provided is, according to my black friends, but a tip of the iceberg as goes the quantity/frequency of what I'll call "passive aggressive" manifestations of racial bias, particularly inequitable treatment borne of irrational ascriptions to stereotypes, hyperbole, hype and anecdotal "evidence." I want to note too that much of the inane acts we've observed of late strike me as being racially motivated, and I think it's indicative the actors harboring some measure of preformed animus toward people of color. I don't know whether the whites involved are racists, but actions such as those noted in the linked content from your OP certainly denies one the ability to presume those women are not racists. Those women have acted so as to invalidate the benefit of the doubt they had and to which they were entitled, prior to doing the things they did, regarding whether they are racists, bigots, prejudiced, etc.


As goes "the problem," well as goes racism, its products and predicates, I think there're multiple problems, not just one:
  1. The ideology of racism's existentialism is itself a problem.
  2. That the objects of racism are nearly always readily identifiable by racists is a problem.
  3. That the agents of racism are often not at all readily identifiable is a problem.
    • Aside: I had a gay white close acquaintance ("Mike") who actually said to me that he understood racism because he had faced similar discrimination on account of his being openly gay and wearing a rainbow pin and pink diamond triangle ear stud. I had to laugh. I told him he should try standing next to a black person fifty yards away from a Klansman who's never seen or heard from him or the black person and guess which of them the Klansman will "hate on." "Mike" got the point (and it was a good thing for both of us that he did); a lot of people don't.
  4. That some people who may not be racists yet deny the legitimacy of the attestations of an entire segment of society, the members of which without exception, AFAIK, have been subjected to racism's overt and/or subtle effects is a problem.

There's no doubt in my mind that Trump has empowered racists and bigots by making them feel as though there heinous/hateful attitudes are "okay" or "normal."

I think there may be more to it than just what you've above noted. There's no question that racism is a learned attitude rather than being endogenous to the human animal; thus white women who express, inculcate or nurture their kids with racist/bigoted notions bear part of the onus

  1. I'm sure some white women contribute to the problem, thus making some of them "a" reason the problem persists. I am hard pressed to concur that white women are "the" reason.
  2. Can you point to some sources of scholarly research that shows that assertion to be true or true of a preponderance of Southern women?

How do those numbers match up compared to the black on black murders just this year in Chicago? Which is worse, btw, a racist rant or impacting bullets? I dont condone either but one is a REAL problem, the other could be solved by using the "sticks and stones" adage usually learned in childhood.

Of course one doesnt have to grow up. However, one probably should give it a shot...just not a drive by.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. Yes, I'm sure there are many problems that can be identified with racism. But I don't think racism is innate, it has to be learned and since women are generally known to be the caregivers and nurturers in the family unit, it stands to reason that they may be at the heart of the problem in propagating racism whether consciously or not.


There's no doubt in my mind that Trump has empowered racists and bigots by making them feel as though there heinous/hateful attitudes are "okay" or "normal."

I think there may be more to it than just what you've above noted. There's no question that racism is a learned attitude rather than being endogenous to the human animal; thus white women who express, inculcate or nurture their kids with racist/bigoted notions bear part of the onus.

Re: those two remarks:
  1. I'm sure some white women contribute to the problem, thus making some of them "a" reason the problem persists. I am hard pressed to concur that white women are "the" reason.
  2. Can you point to some sources of scholarly research that shows that assertion to be true or true of a preponderance of Southern women?

Of course white women aren't "the" reason...but they very well may be the "biggest" reason....

I don't think it's any more frequent than in the past. What's different is that people are now paying attention.

Thats probably true. If people are paying more attention then it likely has to do with the smartphone camera and social media making these incidents public. Whats interesting is that it's also society and not the government that's sending the message that racism won't be tolerated. So I think making these incidents go viral is probably good thing because it not only shows that racism is still huge problem...but also shows people how not to be.

What that paper asserts is that the post-Reconstruction white men who attained leadership roles used the idealized notion of the Southern Lady -- one trait of which was "staying out of public life" -- as their fabricated rhetorical/ideological foil for fomenting and fostering white supremacy. To wit, note the following:


  1. The temporal context of the cited passage is post Civil War. That alone means the passage does not speak to anything having to do with prolonging the Civil War.
    • "in the late nineteenth century, since the white leaders of the ex-Confederate States pledged"
  2. "The white supremacist leaders rewrote history by declaring that the Civil War had been waged to defend a superior civilization whose main incarnation was the southern lady....it was in their name that white men justified the oppression of black men."
    • That's not Southern white women prolonging the war or promoting white supremacy. Twas Southern white men who were doing that.
The essay does not assert that Southern white women held the active role indicated by your assertion. Yes, Southern white men alleged falsely that white women, Southern Ladies needed to be protected, as it were, but the fact that they so paltered does not at all make the women the "historically" existential reason (1) that the War lasted as long as it did or (2) that white supremacy, "Jim Crow" if you like, came to be the rule after Reconstruction. Southern white women, the idealized image of them, was put forth as "straw man" for justifying the oppression of blacks, black men in particular.
