"Can you please get away from me? Officer, I feel highly uncomfortable, can you please grab him?"

A woman who was trying to celebrate her 24th birthday at a Chicago park instead found herself being the target of a racist tirade from a man who got menacingly close, even as a nearby police officer failed to intervene.

Mia Irizarry was setting up her party when the man started harassing her for wearing a Puerto Rico flag shirt.

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America," the man says at one point in the 35-minute video, which was recorded in mid-June and posted to Facebook using its live video function. "Are you a citizen? Are you a United States citizen?"

Puerto Rico, of course, is a commonwealth territory of the United States, and all its residents are US citizens.

Did he think it was the Cuban flag?

Regardless, he was an ass. I feel bad for the young person that had to endure that.

Yeesh. If I had a buck for every American I see wearing some version of the Stars and Stripes on the streets of Vancouver each summer, well, I'd have a lot of bucks.

Or Texas?

Cuba and PR have the exact same flag design, but with the colors reversed.

Yeah, I had to Google the P.R. flag, but they are easy to mix up.
All have that Lone Star look.

I told a guy that was working with me here in PR that he had the PR flag upside down on his car. He looked at that thing for almost an hour. I bought him lunch because although I laughed my rump off, I felt bad for him.

In the beginning of the video she said she is from Puerto Rico. I think he just doesn't understand that it is part of the United States, but I don't blame you for trying to give him the benefit of the doubt.

What was the police officer supposed to do?

I watched about 5 minutes of that video and what I saw a obnoxious drunk that should have been ordered by police right away to get away from those people. I read he was arrested and from what I saw he deserved it.

I saw a "over-patriotic" rant, an "unreasonable" rant, an "intolerant" rant, an "ignorant" rant and a "disrespectful" rant... What I didn't see however, was a "racist" rant. I never heard him utter anything that was racist.

The video won’t play for me here.

It surprises me how many people don’t know that people born on US soil, which includes Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Marianas, other US rerritories and of course all the states, are automatically US citizens.

The bigot was drunk and was eventually arrested.
The woman decided that the first cop wasn't doing enough to help her.
The first cop did tell him to get away from her and the drunk complied. First cop called for backup, another cop came on the scene. It was then that it was explained to the drunk that he was wrong to badger her. She had a permit to have a party and he needed to leave her space. He became belligerent with the police and got himself arrested.

Trump is not responsible for the behavior of drunks. Yours is a false narrative built on your own confirmation bias fueled by anti-Trump sentiment.

Well, is it okay for progressives and socialists to do the same to other people?

Now IMO this man was acting as an ignorant fool, no doubt. He may also have been inebriated, judging by his slurred speech.

He was in a public place, making a public statement about something the woman was wearing, which made the woman "feel uncomfortable."

Yet we have citizens who seem to feel this is perfectly alright, and may be done by any citizen or group of citizens who are "outraged" by a MAGA cap...or anything else that triggers their righteous indignation.

I am not one of those.

I think the officer should have stepped in and asked the man to leave because he was disturbing the peace of someone who had a permit to use that particular area for her celebration.

Still I point out the hypocrisy of any who say that this type of action is okay when done for something they feel justifies it, but see no comparison with this man's actions when such occurs.

Ah, interesting point. When it was a kid in a Whataburger, well he shouldn’t have been wearing the hat.

The one thing that still bothers me is, why this was labeled a "racist" rant?

I didn't hear the man say anything racist.

Do as I say, not as I do? These are some strange convoluted times we are living in.

Racist? not quite that i saw
Bigoted? absolutley
Stupid and retarded? yep that too
because of Trump? possible but unknown

The first officer seen definitively should have did more, no doubt. As soon as he approached her like that multiple times and she said the pavilion is under her permit thats it and he should have stepped in. If this drunk bigoted would have assaulted her we'd be talking about his dismissal right now.

The drunk's actions were overtly xenophobic because he was giving a woman with PR ethnicity a hard time about wearing a Puerto Rico T-shirt.
IMO, the cops did their job, kept the drunk away from her, asked her if she wanted to sign a complaint, and she did. Blaming them, blaming Trump is just dumb.

When I was in the Scouts they told me how to recognize an upside-down Union Jack, a symbol of distress. It has to do with the red St. Patrick cross being off-centre in the Saltire of Scotland, but be damned if I'd know it today. Most Brits, I bet, wouldn't know it. Well, they might but it'd require a long familiarity.

And actually, by like the 7 minute mark the lady says something about ICE (though what I think she saw was the ICE in police written on the car ) and how the officer was “probably racist as ****” and that will no doubt become that determination of the peanut gallery.
