Children as young as 1 appear in immigration court to be reunited with parents

A 1-year-old boy was forced to appear in front of an immigration judge in Phoenix on Friday, according to a report from The Associated Press. The boy, a Honduran immigrant named Johan, is one of the more than 2,000 children who were separated from their parents under the Trump administration’s "zero tolerance" immigration policy. The AP reported that Johan drank milk from a bottle and “played with a small purple ball that lit up when it hit the ground” as he waited with an attorney ahead of his court appearance. Immigration Judge John W. Richardson, who presided over the boy’s case, told the lawyer representing Johan that he was “embarrassed” to ask if the boy could understand the court proceedings. “I’m embarrassed to ask it, because I don’t know who you would explain it to, unless you think that a 1-year-old could learn immigration law,” Richardson said. Immigrant children do not have the right to court-appointed legal representation, but some are being represented by groups like Kids in Need of Defense.

The judge granted Johan, who is in the custody of the Health and Human Services Department, a voluntary departure order. Under the order, Johan will be flown to Honduras to be reunited with his parents. He initially was brought to the U.S. with his father, who was reportedly deported alone to their home in Guatemala, despite officials telling him he would be able to leave with Johan, according to the AP. The AP reported that Johan “cried hysterically” after the hearing as a worker passed him to another person while she collected his diaper bag. Johan’s court appearance, along with the several other children whose experiences were reported by the AP, comes days before the court-ordered deadline for the Trump administration to reunite children with their parents. A federal judge ruled that the administration has until July 10 to reunite children under 5 years old with their parents. The Justice Department asked for a blanket extension of the deadline, but a judge appeared to reject that request, saying instead that extensions may be granted on a case-by-case basis this week.

Even the Immigration judge was embarrassed to be a party to such disturbing and Kafkaesque proceedings.

Yet another poignant example of the sleazy handiwork of the dysfunctional Trump administration.

America is going down the toilet thanks to these current policies

the world is looking at America & thinking, 'WTF' is their problem over there?

The problem is in The White House ..........

This story is (more than?) a bit confusing:

Under the order, Johan will be flown to Honduras to be reunited with his parents. He initially was brought to the U.S. with his father, who was reportedly deported alone to their home in Guatemala, despite officials telling him he would be able to leave with Johan, according to the AP.

Two different countries are mentioned to which two members of a single family are being deported. Why was the father deported to Guatemala and his son is being deported to Honduras when the family lives in Guatemala?

Here's the worst part:

It's clear Trump was keeping those kids, with no real intentions of reuniting them with their parents. He never put any reunification plan in place, and indeed he wasn't even keeping accurate track of them. He's now doing genetic testing of them to find matches, in order to satisfy the court order!

Trump was amassing at least 2K kids per month that we believe due to his claims, which is how he got the 3K kids (that he claims) in about 6 weeks. Some estimate say 5K were taken, but we really don't know at all. In fact, Trump (via Alex Azar) doesn't really know either!

After one year, Trump would have taken at the very least 24,000 kids by his account, if he wasn't stopped! What a despicable humanitarian crisis he was creating. Shocking, really. And he only stopped because of the media. He stopped due to his perceived political damage, not because of ethics, morality, or because it was the right thing to do. Indeed, it was reported Trump is unhappy he stopped, and thinks he should have not signed the executive order ending it all!

This child-taking thing has changed - for good - my already terrible opinion of Trump. This was a line crossed, beyond hope of return or redemption, in my personal opinion. I feel the same about those that support Trump in this endeavor, too.

This is beyond mere policy, but encompasses our basic understanding of humanity. What is right to do to our fellow humans beings, and what is not. No-way can I stand next to Trump or his supporters, anymore.

There is a reason Trump supporters were broadly labeled even if not every last one of them deserved it. There is definitely a core group of Trump supporters that still defends his policies in this regard.

Maybe those were the "deplorables" referred to? I can't think of a better term for someone who thinks it's fine to deliberately separate little kids from families in order to create a bargaining chip with dems, let alone to do so without any plan or intent to ever reunite them.

We'll just steal your kids if you try to cross the board, even to seek asylum. Yeah, great. Maybe that kind of thing is why polled Democrats weren't "extremely proud" of their country at the same rate as polled Reps (there were multiple threads on this, used for anti-left hackish purposes by the usual suspects). That's not a thing to be proud of at all. Not one bit.
