Irony, for me at least, is sitting in a roomful of Trumpers whining about tariffs. But, this was the case yesterday afternoon during a combination Web-ex and face-to-face meeting.

Our client, a manufacturer in Kansas which supplies forks to several lift truck makers around the country buys their forks from China. They then add value to these components in Kansas, by welding on accessories. They hoped to produce millions of these fork assemblies each a year with robots and a staff of highly qualified technicians.

We spent most of the spring developing a modular system for them to do that. Millions of dollars have already been invested in our equipment alone. The company itself has probably spent billions putting their supply chain in place.

Long story short, adding 20% to each fork imported will crush this business plan. I sat their like the cat who ate the canary when they whined about the damage their boi is doing to them.

Trade wars are good, and easy to win.

So...your client took advantage of cheap, government subsidized Chinese steel and don't mind being a part of the demise of our own US steel industry, eh?

Wait...isn't that the kind of corporation the Dems keep calling "greedy"?

Trump has ALL the answers; he is your savior. Bow down to the All Mighty Trump .........

At the end of the day, no matter the reasoning, tariffs end up inflating prices for goods. Even if to correct a complaint about trade practices or prior agreements the result is the same.

Because the price is an artificial shift businesses and consumers change behavior and that means impacting any business model operating (or designed) under prior conditions.

Unavoidable.

In short it is impossible to implement a tariff and not harm someone, so the politics of installing a tariff means a decision on who is harmed.

Yesterday, on the local news, there was a segment about a lobster company. They'd just spent what was for them a small fortune to do business with China. And now they have thousands of lobsters, and nowhere to put them.

Republicans are Failure Junkies.

Millions? Someone is exaggerating.

We spent most of the spring developing a modular system for them to do that. Millions of dollars have already been invested in our equipment alone. The company itself has probably spent billions putting their supply chain in place.

Billions? Now, someone is really exaggerating.

Long story short, adding 20% to each fork imported will crush this business plan. I sat their like the cat who ate the canary when they whined about the damage their boi is doing to them.

They can continue to buy low quality Chinese forks or they can purchase US-made quality forks and they'll spend less on their returns.

Millions? Someone is exaggerating.
How little do you know about automated robotic welding systems? Please tell us how you know absolutely nothing. Do you have the integrity to admit that?

Someone has no idea how expensive setting up a supply chain is. Hint: how cheaply do you think you can build several steel forging facilities in far away lands?

I love it when ignorance shows its stripes.

Ah, another ignorant post. No wonder Trump still has his fan club.

Oh? So...am I wrong? Was your client buying full price steel from China?

Being ignorant of the decades of investment required to play in the global economy is still ignorance.

Okay. Since you won't answer my questions, I take it the answer is no.

Your question was simplistically stupid. But, you probably know that. And, if you don't--too bad.

In any case, instead of crying about Trump maybe people should address the reasons he put those tariff in place? The sooner those problems are resolved, the sooner the tariffs can be removed and the sooner everyone can engage in free, fair, balanced and reciprocal trade around the world.

shrug...

A simple question that can be answered with a yes or a no.

He's an idiot trying to keep his base cranked for the next election.

Your efforts at derailment are being ignored.

The thread is about Trump supporters getting bitten by Trump policies. It's not a thread to educate Mycroft on the complexities of the global market. For that you should read a book.

Me too, unless ignorance is in power.

You are the one talking about people buying steel.
