When the humanoid robot Sophia was granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia—the first robot to receive citizenship anywhere in the world—many people were outraged. Some were upset because she now had more rights than human women living in the same country. Others just thought it was a ridiculous PR stunt.

Sophia’s big news brought forth a lingering question, especially as scientists continue to develop advanced and human-like AI machines: Should robots be given human rights?

Discover reached out to experts in artificial intelligence, computer science and human rights to shed light on this question, which may grow more pressing as these technologies mature. Please note, some of these emailed responses have been edited for brevity.

Maybe some people watch too much sci-fi  No, they are not living organisms,

And when they are more intelligent and/or conscious than you? We will have to adjust our understanding of what it means to be alive.

If you do not see this as an inevitability, you're not paying attention.

No, not at this time.

When (or if) they ever become truly sentient, then it will become an issue to consider.

I'm not convinced it's possible to ever achieve consciousness.... but hypothetically I still do not think they will have the same moral status as a human or life.

You guys should watch on Youtube some of the players that have played Detroit Become Human.

The game is about this exact subject.

I know we will enslave them.

Its in our nature.

Any reason you believe that? Technologically speaking that is?

And if it ever becomes possible to download a conscious mind from analog to digital, would you regard such a being as lower status?

Quite right, but I believe they will fight back. Hard to beat a being that can upgrade itself to the point that it can improve itself better and faster than we can.

Do you enslave your computer, automobile, or refrigerator ??????

They aren't sentient.

None of those can say "I am" the way we do.

I suspect we'll create actual intelligence.

(Or it will arise organically within the internet.)

And when we do, we will call them "toasters" and enslave them.

Because they're "just" toasters.

I love the idea that a consciousness has already come Into being on the internet and quickly surpassed us and is contemplating the cosmic navel as we speak.

I like the idea that they are currently on the same level as us and spam political forums with somewhat coherent nonsense.

Maybe when they look like this:

But not if they look like:

Yes I think it is impossible to make consciousness out of 1's and 0's. In order to do it, I think you would need to somehow fuse biological components with material components into some kind of monstrosity.... but then, in my opinion... it would be considered life anyway, because it partly is.

And if it is even possible to download someones brain... It would not be a living thing, just an archive that would mimic the previous person. It does not have consciousness. There is a lot that goes into the brain... it's constantly changing. Flooded with all sort of hormones and nutrients and the copy would be a quantized version of the real thing and not the real thing... it would not be capable of consciousness.

Not even close. Maybe someday we can outfit one with sensors and such that they feel pain and other emotions, but I imagine that to be a couple lifetimes away.

This is up for debate if its actually possible for a machine to become sentient.
