Why do the vast majority believe that only white people in this nation owned slaves? Clearly that was not the case:

and the wealthiest black property owner in the state. He held 40 slaves at his death

Not sure if William Ellison is an ancestor of Democrat Keith Ellison or not. If he is an ancestor of Keith Ellison then should Keith really be condemning white people for owning slaves while failing to mention his family also owned slaves.

Probably because most were(?) Although in school, I remember reading in the textbooks that there were African American slave owners as well. Maybe they forgot?

My understanding is that this forum is intended to be non political, so a better choice would be the all inclusive General Political Discussion forum if you wanted to talk the issue, or feedback if you wanted to request a new forum...though in my experience those requests are turned down about 99.99% of the time.

Well if this is a "no-no" perhaps a discussion of whether the "civil" war was about freeing slaves or about states' rights.

I am also open to discussing whether counting slaves as 3/5 was to demean them as 3/5 of a human or to limit the amount of House seats available to Southern slave holding states? What I find remarkable is no one ever brings up the fact that Native-Americans were not counted at all which using the 3/5 of a person argument would mean the founders declared Native-Americans not human at all.

"Anthony Johnson was a black Angolan who achieved freedom in the early 17th-century Colony of Virginia after serving his term of indenture. He became a property owner that owned slaves, and was one of the first people in Virginia to have his right to own a slave legally recognized."

He later became a successful tobacco farmer in Maryland and became very wealthy.
