Veteran Leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has been elected president of Mexico, winning the largest landslide in his country's recent history in a remarkable routing of what he terms “the mafia of power”.

Promising to combat corruption and drive down record crime rates, Mr Lopez Obrador captured 53 per cent of the vote, according to preliminary results - a historic victory for the party he created.

Voters decided in their millions to turn their backs on the two parties which have ruled Mexico for almost 100 years, and finally give him a chance - sending his supporters into a frenzy.

Personally, I think he is a dead man walking, but we'll see. He definitely says he is going to stand against corruption. That's like taking a stand against tacos.

I hope he will not carry out his threat to facilitate an invasion of the USA by countries south of the border. That will force the hand of the US as to whether we have a border, immigration control, or not. I'm going to assume for now it's all campaign rhetoric.

I pray that he can create a country that it's citizens don't want to leave. But like I say. IMO, He's a dead man walking unless be cooperates with the cartels, and you can't be a corruption fighter and "one of theirs" at the same time.

Interesting times ahead for Mexico and the US.

I wish the USA would end the War on Drugs already, and usher in a new age of peace for our friends south of the border.

We shell see, Mexico should be one of the wealthiest nations in the world based on natural resources.
It is the corruption that has kept Mexico as a second world nation.
I know very little about Obrador, but here is what Wiki says he is proposing.
He has proposed increases in financial aid for students and the elderly, amnesty for some drug war criminals,[12] universal access to public colleges,[13] cancellation of the under-construction New Mexico City International Airport,[14] a referendum over an energy reform that ended Pemex's monopoly in the oil industry,[15] stimulation of the country's agricultural sector, delay of the renegotiations of NAFTA until after the elections,[16][12] building of more oil refineries, increased spending for welfare, cutting of politicians' salaries to avoid debt spending or higher taxes[17] and decentralization of the executive cabinet by moving Secretaries from the capital to states.[18] Polls showed him as the leading candidate for most of the campaign.
I suspect the devil is in the details. we shell see.

Quite true. It's a large nation with a large population, favorable climate, and tons of resources. It benefits by bordering the US. There's no excuse for the place.

Whether or not he can obtain his objectives in his own government, he is a danger to the US in what he supports and publicly expresses.

Mexican presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) declared mass immigration to the United States a “human right” for all North Americans during a speech Tuesday.

“And soon, very soon — after the victory of our movement — we will defend all the migrants in the American continent and all the migrants in the world,” Obrador said, adding that immigrants “must leave their towns and find a life in the United States.”

Apparently he thinks he is going to push his country's problems on to the US. Just further reason to build a wall.

What people do not understand about corruption is that it sucks the lifeblood out of an economy.
A highway builder who bribes an official to get a contract, will charge the taxpayer many times the amount of the bribe
in higher cost. If things like this are repeated enough, all of Government cost more and is less effective.
It also stifles innovation that would attempt to improve on bids, because the winning bid is not based on the best bid.

Except for the drugs and corruption...

They have been eternally handicapped since the 1500's when Spain conquered Mexico and made them a Spanish colony. Every Spanish colony I can think of are still corrupt rat holes today. The former French colonies are only slightly better. The most successful have been former English colonies.

Today, the decedents of the Caucasian Conquistadors have most of the power and money, and everyone else - brown decedents of the indigenous tribes - are just seen as a pain in the ass and the sooner they get the hell out and move to the USA the better.

I would love to see us reach an agreement with Mexico to join military forces and clean that toilet out once and for all and then maybe we wouldn't need a wall. They have the potential to be a wealthy nation if they could have a "do over".

We rebuilt and re made Europe after WW2. Why should they wait for a war with the US for us to do it for them?

Do you still see California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Florida, as corrupt rat holes today?
Those place were all Spanish colonies.

No, because the original controlling government was thrown out when they became US territories.

Don't be crapping my thread, yo!

I think the generalization is too broad, almost all of those countries also threw out the controlling government.
I Think Mexico got rid of Spain in 1821.

Mexico is little different than most countries. Only a few countries could stand up the light of inside corruption investigations and come out clean.

Mexico is not all that different than the US where our govt. codifies corruption such as lobbyists and industry writing federal bills, some by Alec...
without hearings or changes.

Mexico and many nations never had the legal environment for labor unions and collective bargaining, so while the US since Reagan and right wing (repub)
evisceration of labor hasn't got US labor back to $9/day (give it time) thus, Mexico's labor has not benefited from American manuf. in the 20+ years of NAFTA.

Mexican labor is the role model for the future, reasonably competent labor for almost no pay. Wages in the 1990's, $9/day, wages today, as low as...$6/day.

Come on blogroids, the elephant in the room, is greedy capitalist scum in business...and govt, everywhere.

This is a completely different topic, and one that you could research and post yourself. Don't make me do all the hard stuff!

It has to do with property rights, and the court system used to resolve disputes, not to mention the corruption of the Catholic church at that time. South America became a feudal system under the Spanish where the elite (the Conquistadors), owned most of the best property. There was no controlling "ethic" or law to cause the country to me governed differently. It has not changed. Why should it when the "owners of the country" also have the power? Maybe this new guy can do it. He's more Trump than he is letting on.

(The Vietnam war was fought over land reform. When was the last time that was brought up?)

Now you got me crapping my own thread! :moon:

I would like to know what he and Trump discussed in their phone conversation.

Since every other conversation Trump has had with world leaders has been leaked, I wonder why this one hasn't.

His proposals are the typical pie in the sky socialist rhetoric we have seen before.
the issue is that it takes money and a ton of money to impliment that.

the only really really rich people in mexico are the cartel owners.
he would have to take most of their wealth to implement his plans.

the fact is he doesn't have the capital to do what he wants to do.
then again neither did sanders but that didn't stop his pie in the sky nonsense either.

if he even gets close to implementing any of of this you will see mexico's economy destabilize worse than what it is.
their biggest money maker is US dollars sent back to mexico.

if he wants to implement his plan it would be very easy for the trump administration to freeze all wire transfers to mexico.
that would pretty much kill them.

Mexicans in U.S. send cash home in record numbers

Wealthy crime gangs don't give up crime just because one line of "business" ends. They just replace it with another. The main problem you have in Mexico is socialism. Get rid of that and the rest will take care of itself.

Ending the black market in the United States would transform Mexico and Central America for the better.

Socialism ha ha ha ha

You’re blaming the market for drugs in the U.S. for Mexico’s woes. Let’s start with the production and/or supply of opium, heroine, cocaine, meth and marijuana to the U.S. market. Could that same huge industry exist in the U.S.? No. So why does it exist in Mexico?

It exists because the government there is too poor and too corrupt to stop it. Why is it too poor and too corrupt?

Socialism.

If Mexico was a democratic capitalistic state like the United States, it would have the money, the resources and the will to stop such illegal industries.

Socialism ha ha ha ha

Mexico calls itself a “federal presidential republic” but when it comes to socialism names don’t mean much. For instance North Korea is called “the Democratic People's Republic,” and there’s nothing “democratic” or “people” about it. It’s a Marxist Stalinist state and a giant socialist prison.

The politics of Mexico are dominated by three political parties: National Action Party (PAN), the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

PAN is strongly Catholic, and both PRD and PRI are full members of the Socialist International, an association that wants to establish global socialism.

Many Catholics are socialists and others are against socialism, but when you add all parties up Mexico is decidedly socialist. This is why gangsters are able to control politicians and police the way they do.

*Note – many people confuse the gangster’s money making schemes with “capitalism”, but that is a common mistake. Crime is not capitalism.

Lets hope he cleans up his country. We are told that most Mexicans are here wanting a good life. If he can give it to them, more power to him.
