I swear this is the twilight zone. I never thought I would live to see the day when the United States would argue that, in the name of freedom, governments should have no role in Attempting to curb racism and xenophobia.

The United Nations has always maintained that racism and xenophobia are incompatible with modern democracies. But a Trump appointee to the state department ( what little is left of its remnants) has now argued that this violates freedom and the US will have no part of it.

In speaking about the UN document condemning racism and xenophobia, this is what he says about the people of our country and our president:

“The drafters say 'populism and nationalism' as if these are dirty words," wrote Andrew Veprek, the deputy assistant secretary for refugees and migration, in documents obtained exclusively by CNN. "There are millions of Americans who likely would describe themselves as adhering to these concepts. (Maybe even the President.). So are we looking to here condemn our fellow-citizens, those who pay our salaries?"

Read the full article. It is absolutely shocking the kind of people now running our country. Someone pinch me and tell me this is not real. This is not normal.

This seems to be the key statement and I agree with it:

“The drafters need to focus on behavior and actions - which states can control - rather than attitudes and states of mind."

We've seen what nationalism means in the mind of Donald Trump ... racism, bigotry, and xenophobia.

Now they want to ban these descriptive terms, just like the internal government ban on using the term "climate change".

What the UN is purposing is anti 1st amendment, so f@ck them and kudos to Andrew Veprek for dismissing that anti American BS. Why can't all the freedom hating commies go to Venezuela or some other socialist sh!thole.

Governments can play a key role in fostering attitudes and cultures which create more stable and functional democracies.

Did I just interrupt your little anti Trump circle jerk? Sorry guys have fun playing with yourselves...

All Americans have come from s**t hole countries. Why would anyone make the trip they were happy where they were?

The pendulum swings both ways. We do not have thought crimes in this country nor would I ever want to see Republican lawmakers wielding the pen in such an environment.

The UN can help create more stable democracies in whatever sh!thole they want to but don't forget in the US we're a republic and we're doing just fine despite what libtards think.

Remember when the government went after communists? You guys are looking to have those days back? Knuckle draggers. You cannot carry a coherent thought past the next headline!

Why do these idiots believe that the UN has ANY say in our government?

Andrew Veprek might want to be a bit more careful with what he wishes for

Veprek's words & deeds are undermining American values & playing into the hands of the Nazi agenda & values of Furher Drumpf

It's pretty obvious that tens of millions of Americans were not paying attention & they elected a bigoted buffoon for Furher

the same **** happened in Germany, many decades ago

looked how well that worked out for them ............

Yes now the GOP is in bed with the Commies, how times change.

It’s not just about the UN. Because long experience has shown that racism and xenophobia are the first steps to human rights violations and unstable two bit banana republics.

The UN universal declaration of human rights was spearheaded by the United States in 1948 to create a politically and economically more stable world. Now we have pulled out of the UN council on human rights, and act like these values are something alien. Weird.

You sound just like those Alt-Right who think being a racist is something to brag about, but I am sure I am wrong. The first Amendment does not approve of all speech including yelling fire in a theater. Some of the so called free speech by those who are racists is yelling fire in a theater. especially when they call for hurting those who they don't agree with.

Cute sentiment but has nothing to do with my comment sweetheart. Believe me I understand people being able to think or say whatever they want upsets you people but we like freedom here. Why don't guys going to place that's aspiring to become a totalitarian dystopia? Europe is going full IngSoc, they already send the thoughtpolice after you if you say anything that goes against they're political orthodoxy online, y'all would love it.

You are a "white nationalist"? Are you sure you're really white enough to make that claim? We'll need to see your complete genealogy.

What's scary is the UN who takes it upon themselves to condemn "words" as racist...How do "words" threaten democracy? Seems to me that banning words is a threat to democracy, but what does a a freedom loving person like me know?

The deputy assistant secretary for refugees and migration, a foreign service officer promoted by the White House to an unusually senior position for his rank, disputed the idea that leaders have a "duty" to condemn hate speech and incitement, and repeatedly rejected use of the words nationalism, populism, and xenophobia.

"The drafters say 'populism and nationalism' as if these are dirty words," wrote Andrew Veprek, the deputy assistant secretary for refugees and migration, in documents obtained exclusively by CNN. There are only 3 things that a government should be doing when it comes to racism.

1: Education. The more educated a person is the less likely they are to be racist. Note: I said "less likely". There are obviously racist people out there that are quite well educated. But there is a link between education and not being racist.

2: Prosecute crimes like assault, murder etc etc committed by racists to the fullest extent of the law.

3: Lead by example. Everyone that the government hires must be based strictly on merit. Not skin color, cultural background etc etc. Only thing that should matter is their criminal history, education, and ability to remain impartial while carrying out their duties.

What the government should NOT do is try and legislate how people think. Veprek is correct when he said "The drafters need to focus on behavior and actions - which states can control - rather than attitudes and states of mind." Living in any area where those with the power try to make you think like they think you should think is no better than living in Nazi Germany under Hitler.

I too object to the use of the word "nationalism" in a negative light. Nationalism is not a bad thing in a world filled with Nations. Yes, it can be taken too far. But so can globalism. As with anything else in the world, no matter what it is, too much of anything can be bad. Everything in moderation. But there is nothing wrong with taking pride in your location, your country, your state, or your town and wanting it to not change so much that you no longer recognize it....that it no longer feels like your home. And "Home" is something that everyone of every political persuasion wants to protect.

PS: Anyone else find it ironic that they condemned the word "populism" while also saying that its a threat to Democracy? Do they not know that democracies are all about populism? People are literally elected by the most popular vote.

Why do these idiots believe that the UN has ANY say in our government?

The idea of being able to compel speech and ultimately the way people think, gives them a major hard-on. It's 2018 and people can think and say whatever they want. Well that completely goes against regressive values.

All Americans have come from s**t hole countries. Why would anyone make the trip they were happy where they were?

What are you talking about? I am an American and I was born here. Your so-called "s**thole" country of my birth is The United States of America.

I am also a nationalist. I believe in this country as a special segment of the world, a place where the ideals we adhere to have made us great.

I hold to the idea that our nation continues to deserve it's unique existence, and that it's ideals of individual liberty be preserved. I oppose efforts to it being subsumed into the morass socialists/progressives are striving to achieve by globalization.

If the rest of the world is so wonderful, please explain why so many people want to come HERE, rather than remain in those paradises where they currently live?

After reading the CNN article, I can see the typical progressive slant to what seems to be a reasonable response to a prejudiced document.

I would have to see all his comments and read the whole document he was editing to be certain, but from what I read in the article? I don't see racism, I see someone opposed to turning our nation into another socialist craphole state.

No prob.

I'm not sure how white I am, either. I know I'm part Irish and part German, but that only accounts for 75%. That's 25% unaccounted for. And the German/Irish is hearsay by way of relatives. Perhaps they lied...

An excellent response, but IMO it would be more accurate had you put "any government's" in the place of "Republican" in the above sentence.
