There are few companies in the country that scream America more than Harley Davidson. Long the bike of those who consider themselves "real" Americans. Earlier this year Harley announced it was moving some of its production from Kansas City to Thailand. This despite the tax cuts Trump offered, and despite the relatively conservative state of Missouri.

Now they're saying that they will move even more of their production in order to avoid the tariffs imposed by Europe in response to Trump's idiotic trade war. Instead of admitting that this is Trump's own stupid fault he has now threatened to leavy immense taxes on Harley that would likely destroy the whole company.

This is the closest thing I have seen to totalitarian communism in the history of this country. Threatening to use the office of the presidency to destroy a private company through taxation? I thought Liberals where the ones advocating Stalinism?

Let's hear it right-leaning Libertarian Trump supporters. Where's your free market capitalism now? Defend your boy Trump over this shocking display of tyranny. You can't even qualify this as crony capitalism. This is just straight up bullying of a private corporation by a commander and chief.

You need to do some due diligence before you jump on the Harley bandwagon:

They are a poorly managed company. Plain and simple. It's a miracle they haven't folded by now. Not to get too technical, they need to be bought up my Polaris company. That is the best direction they can go beyond down.

Harley is among the first of many who will be moving jobs out of the US. Whats your excuse going to be for the rest of them?

They are a poorly managed company. Plain and simple.

Doesn't matter. That's irrelevant. What matters is what Trump is threatening to do to them. No company can survive if you've got a President threatening to destroy them over a personal temper tantrum. Every intelligent person on the planet knew full well there would be repercussions from Trump's idiotic trade war. Harley is just proof of how stupid Trump's plan is, and rather than admit he's at fault Trump's trying to destroy them. This is the definition of tyranny. This is precisely how dictators like Stalin, Lenin, and the North Koreans try to control their economy.

Well if they are that ****ed up, we aren't going to miss them.

We aren't? Are you sure? Cause I thought that was the whole point of everything Trump was trying to do in the first place. Prevent companies from shipping jobs overseas to take advantage of us on trade? It seems to me that Trump is causing not fixing the exact problem his supporters elected him to fix.

chuckie,

At no point did he claim they are a well run company. And that's not the point of the thread. The entire point is that the president shouldn't be publicly threatening companies. That's what happens under communist run or dictator run countries. The entire point here is that their situation was made even worse by the president because of the trade war/tariffs (fact) and that in response to that they are going to ship some jobs overseas to try to counteract that added cost of business (fact). And now Trump is threatening a private entity because that company is doing what they think is best. This is something that you should be against. Imagine if Obama had raised minimum wage and Harley then shipped jobs overseas. Would you come in here and start arguing "but they are a poorly run country" or would you be saying "the president shouldn't be meddling with private companies"?

So a company decided to manufacture outside of the US at the drop of a hat?

No... Just no.

Harley has been waiting for an excuse to go overseas...

They have already closed manufacturing sites in the US.

Imagine the redhat temper tantrum if Democrats did this to American companies with crappy wages and benefits.

Well if they are that ****ed up, we aren't going to miss them.

Tell that to the hundreds or thousands of HD workers who will be losing their jobs. They will vote in November!

...Free market capitalism.....since when? We've been running the Corporate Capitalism system for a long long time now.

But I think if Trump were to go through with this, that he'd have a lawsuit on his hands. I don't think he can just target companies because they are trying to enact cost savings measures by offshoring production. I mean, Trump's companies themselves manufacture in China, not America.

Also, I do consider myself a "real American" and I ride a Yamaha.

As I read it

The taxes would be on bikes HD imported into the US which I doubt was part of the plan for HD. In all likelihood HD was/is going to produce knockdown kits in the US for final assembly in Europe to avoid EU tariffs. MB does the same with Sprinter vans.

OMG, I only joked that he would do this.

1. Trump adds tariffs to European goods
2. Europe retaliates with their own tariffs
3. American company is forced to move production to Europe to avoid tariffs
4. Trump punishes American company for moving production

Do we need any more proof that Trump is utterly incompetent?

You seem to have forgotten who is currently packing the court system with right-wing **** bag justices that will rule in favor of everything Trump does no matter how abhorrent.

Hmmm....while there is certainly partisanship in the SCOTUS, which sucks because the courts shouldn't be political. But Republocrat Oligarchy as it is, they want to make sure their control spreads to all branches. Regardless, I would think there were some limits to what the Court would just let Trump do.

Harley has been waiting for an excuse to go overseas...
Irrelevant. Trump and Republicans told us their tax cuts and trade war was going to stop it from happening. Now they are speeding it up.

Imagine if Obama had raised the minimum wage and Harley then shipped jobs overseas.

It's worse than that. Imagine if Obama had raised the minimum wage, then when Harley used it as an excuse to ship jobs overseas he threatened to destroy their company via taxation.

You'd like to think so, but you'd be wrong. Particularly if Anthony Kennedy retires or RBG passes within the next year or two.

A brand whose most important marketing aspect is that it's 'made in America' as part of it's image was just waiting for an excuse?

That seems rather unlikely.

Europe is not exactly a low cost manufacturing area. The only reason it would make sense to place a plant there is due to tariffs especially as they only account for about 15% of US sales

Harley-Davidson Will Close Its Kansas City Assembly Plant

By Kyle Palmer • Jan 30, 2018

Motorcycle company Harley-Davidson is closing its assembly plant in the Northland, which employs about 800 people. Layoffs will start later this year and there'll be full closure by the third quarter of 2019, according to a news release.
The Kansas City plant's operations are being consolidated into its York, Pennsylvania, final assembly plant, the company says in a financial report released Tuesday. Harley-Davidson plans to add 450 jobs out east.
"This decision was made after very careful consideration of our manufacturing footprint and the appropriate capacity given the current business environment,"

So it looks like the KC plant was already struggling...and instead of shifting all jobs to PA they are shifting some assembly jobs to Thailand and Brazil to avoid the threatened EU trade increases. But this was in the works back in January.
