U.S. Senators Move Again To Block F-35 Sales To Turkey Over Russia Deal

U.S. senators have moved for a second time to block delivery of F-35 stealth fighter jets to Turkey unless it abandons an arms deal with Russia, even as the plane's manufacturer announced the roll-out of the first aircraft purchased by Ankara. The Senate Appropriations Committee passed a spending bill for U.S. foreign operations on June 21 after adding an amendment blocking delivery of the F-35s unless Turkey drops its plans to buy Russian S-400 missile-defense systems. A similar measure blocking the F-35 sales to Turkey was added to a massive defense bill that passed the Senate on June 18. Washington and its NATO allies have expressed concerns for months over Turkey's 2016 agreement to buy the S-400, warning that the Russian system is not inter-operable with NATO and U.S. military equipment. Some legislators also fear that if Turkey uses the highly advanced U.S. jets alongside the S-400 systems, Russia may gain access to sensitive and secret technologies used in the aircraft.

"The concern is that the F-35 is the most advanced aircraft, the most advanced NATO aircraft, and if Turkey goes forward with the acquisition of the S-400, it will allow the Russians to collect information on how to best attack an F-35 fighter," said the sponsor of the Senate appropriations amendment, Senator Chris Van Hollen. "The Russians could more easily evaluate the capabilities of the F-35 and detect and exploit its vulnerabilities. That is unacceptable," he said. While the Senate bills target Turkey's F-35 purchases, the House version of the defense bill, which was passed in May, would stop all U.S. weapons sales to Turkey until the Pentagon analyzes the implications of worsening tensions between Washington and Ankara.

The Trump administration - principally Trump and Mattis - are attempting an end-around here because they drool at the prospect of Turkey buying up to 100 US F-35 aircraft. While Trump lambastes China for stealing US intellectual property, he has no problem providing cutting-edge US military technology to Turkey ... an Erdogan dictatorship and a country aligning with Putin's Russia and purchasing Russian military hardware. Why not just fly a F-35 to Moscow and park it on Red Square?

Lessee now. If he buys US missile defense/offense weapons, the electronics embed devices that allow the USA to shut them down remotely. More simply stated, if Turkey is attacked by Israel, the missile systems are not going to work. The F-35s probably have similar devices. Perhaps this feature of USA weaponry could be an impediment to sales. Recognizing the current ongoing animosity between Turkey and the USA, it would be rational for Turkey to consider alternative purchases. Flawed USA policy.

who the HELL are we to tell Turkey what to buy and not buy? The S400 is one of the best AABM systems in the world.
WE are leaning on India as well - again why is it up to us what sovereign nations purchase?

Obviously, you are blissfully unaware of "reverse engineering".

Lessee now. Turkey has probably read the PR brochures on the F-35. Most likely knows about the remote monitoring capability. I'll wager a shiny nickel there are private companies who could handle that aspect. I'll wager a shiny quarter Roosia would do it for free as that allows them to pour all over the F-35 and it's technology. I'll wager a Trump MAGA hat the Roosians would pay big bucks or at least big arms sales to get to tear an F-35 down to the hubcaps.

I wonder if General Flynn still can get a finder's fee if the deal goes through... :peace

They are a little late

Turkey has taken delivery of 2 F35's currently in the US for training purposes

I’m not saying whether we should or shouldn’t sell it to them but since it is weapons technology that they want to buy from us it is certainly our business. Do you think we should just automatically sell our weapons technology to any country that wants it?

what? Is Turkey supposed to engineer it's own? why if they are already available would they do that?
why is it our business what they buy?

that's not what's happening.
US/NATO sez us selling the F-35's while Turkey buys the S-400 is a security risk;
but we are leaning on India not to buy the S-400 either. India is not NATO -why lean on them as well?

It's our Russiaphobia.
Everything we deal with or regarding Russia has to be a zero sum game( between us) even if actions would benefit both .
That's an Obama holdover, and it goes directly against realpolitik

Hi Dave..I've been around here before, but good to see you again.
Think '8 Fold Noble Path' in Buddhism that Buddha taught as the path after sitting under the Bodi tree for enlightenment
