The cancer that is Trump has infected NASA

At the rate we're going, I swear, if a giant meteor were to be on a collision course with planet Earth, it would be a partisan issue as to what to do in response.

Republicans would analyze the data themselves and insist the scientists are wrong and doing something about the meteor is a waste of money. Some would argue that it just makes sense to do something even if we're not sure it will hit the earth. Surely, if we do something and we were wrong and it wasn't going to hit the earth we just lose that effort. If we do nothing and it hits the earth, we lose everything.

It's the same case with climate change. The cost of doing something is inconsequential compared to the potential cost of doing nothing. It's a no-brainer.

You're looking at the wrong side of the equation. Congress doesn't typically fund what it doesn't get asked for.

So NASA never asks for money? Last I knew they draw up a report every year that stats how much funding they would need and submits it to Congress.

Wow I thought nasa went to crap starting with clinton, with the soviet union collapsed there was less need to dump money into space. Then other than the mars rover I am pretty sure bush jr did the same. Under obama space shuttles got shelved and since we have relied on hitch hiking russian spaceflights for our astronaughts. Granted the russian flights are far cheaper than space shuttles due to them using one time rockets(the soviet union built one space shuttle that made ours look like crap, it made only one flight and was sent to storage due to the high costs of running it).

However nasa using russian space launches for people means we are reliant on their schedule as well as good standing with that country, if someone wants to fix nasa they need to speed up new launch systems, design single use rockets like russia does that are far cheaper than space shuttles per launch and give nasa it's ability to work independant of foreign nations back.

"It flies in the face of what a flagship mission actually is. Speaking at this year's big American Astronomical Society meeting, NASA Associate Administrator Thomas Zurbuchen said,

What we learn from these flagship missions is why we study the Universe. This is civilization-scale science... If we don't do this, we aren't NASA."

Since Nixon, NASA has suffered the death of a 1,000 cuts. Finding is half what it was, in constant dollars, and about to get cut again.

NASA is one of the few places in government that largely pays for itself. The tax revenues from new businesses and products, that are NASA spinoffs, cover most of the costs. When you are talking about national prestige and leadership, it would be cheap even if it didn't generate all that business.

NASA should go back to finding out what is wrong with Toyotas like Obama told them to.

Cuts to NASA have been going on for a very long time. Why you want to blame President Trump is puzzling. Well not really!

The Obama administration cut NASA's planetary-sciences budget by 20 percent in 2013, as part of a restructuring plan, contrary to the recommendations of the National Research Council.

Everybody knows a big part of the Obama legacy is that he killed NASA.

How Trump got named in this I will never know.

Trump's people cut the proposal limit. Why does that escape you? NASA's core mission, science, just got downgraded.

And the last guy made them into a Muslim outreach agency which by itself is a distraction to the mission.

How much does it cost to be a Muslim outreach agency anyways?

How Trump got named in this I will never know.

Trump haters will blame him for everything from solar flares to teenage acne. I'm pretty sure they'll blame him for the Chicago fire in 1871.

But Trump is creating a Space Force. Once work begins on the Death Star funding will increase

Trumps people? I'm sure you have proof of that right? Who exactly cut the proposal limit? Are you really suggesting that those at the National Research Council and the National Academy of Sciences are "Trumps people"?

It was President Obama who shut down the Shuttle and made NASA a shell of its former self. That not only put our personnel on the international space station totally at the mercy of other countries, there is nobody up there repairing the Hubble that is gradually being shut down due to lack of maintenance.

Conversely, in opposition to the opinion of my ultra right wing conservative significant other who thinks space exploration to be a waste of money, President Trump shares my view that space exploration is indeed the final frontier and he is giving NASA hope that space missions could be resumed.

In March last year, he signed appropriations for NASA with a similar amount authorized in the current budget and will be increased if we do resume space exploration.

In March of 2017:

The new law authorizes $19.5 billion in spending for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for the budget year that began Oct. 1. Cruz said the authorization bill is the first for the space agency in seven years, and he called it a "terrific" achievement.

Trump last week sent Congress a budget proposal that seeks $19.1 billion in spending authorization for the agency next year.

"For almost six decades, NASA's work has inspired millions and millions of Americans to imagine distant worlds and a better future right here on earth," Trump said. "I'm delighted to sign this bill. It's been a long time since a bill like this has been signed, reaffirming our commitment to the core mission of NASA: human space exploration, space science and technology."

NASA was on life support under Obama. It has a new lease on life under Trump.

If you want to prove me wrong, go waste your time. Not doing your homework for ya.

In other words you have nothing more than baseless claims.

You're the one making the claim. The onus is on you to prove your claim. Not mine to disprove a claim based on nothing more than your say so. Your say so is worthless without proof.
