Kirstjen Nielsen, head of the Department of Homeland Security, denied that the Trump administration has
a policy of separating families at the border.

Apparently there are some people close to Donald Trump with the capacity for shame. Not decency or courage, of course, but at least furtive recognition that they’re complicit in something vile. Over the last few days, stories of bureaucratic sadism have poured forth from America’s southern border. The Associated Press described a Texas warehouse where “hundreds of children wait in a series of cages” with up to 20 people inside. The New York Times reported on a mother deported to Guatemala without her 8-year-old son. In The Washington Post, the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics described a shelter for toddlers where staffers aren’t allowed to hug or hold the bereft children. ProPublica obtained a recording of small children wailing for their parents in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility, while a Border Patrol agent joked, “We’ve got an orchestra here.” As outrage has built nationally, several people associated with the White House stepped forward to dissemble. Kirstjen Nielsen, head of the Department of Homeland Security, sent out a series of tweets denying that the administration’s policy was in fact the administration’s policy. “We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period,” she lied.

Melania Trump’s spokeswoman put out a slippery statement distancing the first lady from the president’s actions and sowing confusion about their cause. “Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform,” the statement said, as if her husband were not responsible for the separations. On “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, claimed that “nobody” in the administration likes the policy. “You saw the president on camera, that he wants this to end,” she said. It’s hard to tell if these women are engaged in deliberate gas-lighting or frantic reputation maintenance. But no one should be able to squirm out of admitting that the evil practice of family separation is Donald Trump’s doing, abetted by everyone who abets him. “The truth is they’ve been doing this all along for deterrence purposes, as sometimes they boldly said in the press,” Lee Gelernt, an A.C.L.U. lawyer who argued the case, told me. “But when confronted in a federal lawsuit they tried to retroactively justify it.” It’s hard to know who’s worse — the sociopaths like Miller who glory in the administration’s cruelty, or those who are abashed enough to lie about the filthy thing they’re part of, but not to do anything else.

Curse Trump. Shame on the GOP.

The dems think they can draw blood from Trump on this issue.
Make no mistake this "outrage" is for one reason... try to damage the
Trump administration. They don't give a whit.

Why is it that the democratic party is willing to spend multi-millions on illegal aliens when
we have kids across the country wanting. Millions under the poverty level. They (dems) won't
secure the border and they seem to support MS-13 staying in the country.

4 year old kids are MS-13? Sure. Why not.

If you want to change our laws about asylum seekers you need to do it in Congress not by punishing innocent children and those that see us as their only hope of survival. We are better than that. Trump has brought this on himself in a vain attempt to use kids as hostages to extort the Democrats into voting for the stupid wall that Mexico was going to pay for. Sorry but we don't negotiate with terrorists.

Not yet. But with Trump scarring them for life and giving them reason to despise the U.S., who knows.

Curse Trump. Shame on the GOP.

Shame on you for not knowing the law is being enforced. Shame on illegals for bringing children along as props. Shame of the media for coming up with the latest "why Trump is no good" meme of the month.

Trump supporters should have their children taken away as well. They are obviously unfit parents.

It was only a matter of time before this type of thinking came out.

Some people wonder why Trump has supporters. Stuff like this is EXACTLY why he has support.

In the 90's Newt Gingrich and Henry Hyde made me think that I didn't want to be a Republican anymore. The Democrats almost had a convert until this fella named George W. Bush came along talking about "compassionate conservatism".

Bush won me back and I was happy to stay GOP for 15 years ... until I finally had to leave for good when the GOP abrogated their responsibility to veterans and showed they were a party which could embrace Trump.

Republicans now won't even be compassionate in the name of enlightened self-interest. So what if this hurts the economy. So what if this drives up crime rates. So what if Trump's policies are generating recruits for MS-13. So what if this compounds the tension between police and the general populace. So what if civil servants are being pressured into acting in ways reminiscent of the Third Reich. There's no room for compassion or common sense in Trump's GOP.

Asylum seekers don't cross the border illegally. They go to a port of entry.

And it's thinking like this that will make sure that one day he doesn't have any left.

This whole matter wouldn't be an issue if the people that brought kids here did so legally. It isn't the Trump administration's fault that these people chose a method of coming to this country that violates our laws. You may as well be cursing the homeowner who had their house broken into because they had stuff some criminal wanted.

Agreed with changing the law, until that time what do we do with the children of parents held in detention ??

Yes, because prior to Trump this didn't happe... wait, yes it did, you just weren't told to be outraged by it so you didn't give a damn.

Shame on your for trying to pretend that the law wasn't being enforced before Trump came out with the current zero-tolerance policy that is at the heart of the current mess. Shame on you for harboring the delusion that this is merely a 'meme of the month' rather than a craven ploy to gain political leverage for Trump.

Actually, MS-13 is out of El Salvador. If you truly think MS-13 is so terrible, then you can't simultaneously condemn these parents for trying to get their kids away from them.

I digress. Trumpettes have all the cognitive dissonance it takes to believe both.

Asylum seekers don't cross the border illegally. They go to a port of entry.

And are being turned away in droves mostly because Sessions has ordered asylum admissions "slow walked". They are left with no choice but to enter illegally and turn themselves in to border guards. Asylum can only be granted to persons within our borders.

Asylum admissions are slow walked? Link?

Where was your outrage when Bush signed the law being enforced and Obama was enforcing it? Same detention centers.

...says the guy who reposted child crisis actor memes from Gateway Pundit after the Parkland massacre and laughed about it afterwards.

Wasn't the same detention centers.

Obama's centers were set up because of a spike in unaccompanied minors due to a misunderstanding about who would qualify for DACA. The centers were set up out of necessity to handle overflow, not as a strategy to hold children hostage to manipulate the opposition party and send a message to future migrants.

Obama's centers were far from ideal, but they were done because they were needed fast. Not as a cruel strategy.
