Trump says he won't sign GOP's compromise immigration bill

6/15/18

President Trump on Friday said that he would not sign the House GOP’s compromise immigration bill, delivering a major blow to Republican leadership’s plans. GOP leaders reached an agreement to hold two votes next week on a pair of immigration bills including a compromise immigration bill, which is the product of weeks of negotiations between moderate Republicans and conservatives, and a more hard-line immigration measure from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.). Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) earlier in the week said that Trump was excited about the compromise bill and seemed to be on board with the plan, which sticks to the four main “pillars” outlined by the White House.

The compromise measure creates a new merit-based visa program for Dreamers, provides $25 billion for border security, ends the diversity visa lottery program and limits family-based migration — the four priorities outlined by Trump earlier this year. The measure also ends the separation of immigrant children and parents at the border, ends “catch and release” immigration loopholes and contains a trigger mechanism to halt the new visas if Congress denies funding for the wall. GOP leaders plan to whip the bill on Friday, with floor votes scheduled for next Thursday.

No DACA, then no bipartisan raising of the debt ceiling again. It's as simple as that.

Apparently he likes breaking up the families and putting these kids into the camps too much to go along with this legislation.

remember in November.

Having the camps allows the US to concentrate the kids into a few locations. The US can then look to solutions to the issue. One I am sure might be a final one

Wow, Congress actually does it's job and produces something I can live with, and he torpedos his own parties efforts, what the literal **** is going on with this guy.

he ran on the "wall"

do you think he is going to sign legislation without it? really?

you see what his supporters want....do you think they will abide with a lesser deal?

another thread godwined

you really need to get out more....fresh air, sunshine....

i think politics is starting to really get to you....

Hey, your boy Trump said that American intelligence agencies were like Nazi Germany. Opens the door, I'd say.

Build the wall, lock her up, repeal and replace, who cares what Trump's supporters will abide? Not Trump.

Wow, subtle.

Here is what's happening and why. We aren't blindly releasing people and hoping they show up in the future for some hearing. That is an absurd policy. The separating of children from parents is not new. What's new is not giving a free pass to family units who simply show up at the border. Of course, wailing about this and acting like Trump is doing something unprecedented, is to be expected

Trump should not sign Ryan's bill. Ryan is a weak kneed snake in the grass boy toy for lobbyists. The GOP would do well to try to remove him from the speakership ASAP.

This and was already pointed out, the clause to end the legislation if congress doesn't fund the wall is useless, and Trump know it. One thing we all learn about politics very early on is that when you give something good to the people, it's nearly impossible to take it back. Trump isn't about to fall for this trick WITHOUT the wall in it.

Tim-

This is simply one last stab by Trump at getting the Immigration Policy he wants before the mid-terms. First he held DACA recipients and Dreamers hostage. That didn't pan out. Now he is holding even younger children hostage. I actually don't think that is going to pan out for Donald either because as hard as he wants to make the case that current law is the issue, Sessions and Trump changed the policy that created this particular dynamic.

The point is well taken that we have ignored Immigration policy to perpetuity Administration after Administration with one exception (not Obama) and Congress after Congress. So in that sense Trump has a point. The problem is that he is not going to get Miller instigated Immigration policy through the Congress. There are not the votes to do it regardless of the mercilessness of the current predicament and frankly I get why. The system is simply going to bust at the seams at some point here and that well be that. Trump is not going to get the bill he wants.

That said, I cannot help but point out again the most pressing concern and the biggest hole in our current three legged system. Congress after Congress has been literally lining up for what is now the only bipartisan effort they make and have made for decades. That is to toss their Legislative responsibilities over the wall to the Executive grinning like idiots the entire time. The latest Corker/Kaine AUMF effort represents the latest edition of this travesty of American Politics. The latest formula for this nonsense has Senators and Congressman proposing legislation that "looks like" they are actually doing something when in fact reading the legislation exposes that they are simply again avoiding their legislative responsibilities and obligations and using an actual piece of legislation to do it. It is disgusting and it is in large part how we have reached this circumstance where now the Congress is utterly useless, a mere appendage populated by Reps and Senators that blather while in session, take off as quickly as they can so they can get about the real business they are all in. The business they are all in now is the business of getting reelected so that they can go back and avoid their obligations for another term.

In fact, our government has Appendicitis. The Congress is the government's useless appendix as it functions today and it is poisoning the rest of the body.

It would be hysterical if it were not so sad. I would encourage Americans to stop avoiding their own responsibilities to demand real choices in the Election process, Senators and Congressmen that actually want the obligations that come with the job, not just the retinue that comes with the job.

It's been updated.

Where i believer the system is going to break down and bite us the tax payer in the rear end is that this system supervised by HHS was not and is not set up to accommodate this volume of young kids. The social workers charged with their care are likely doing the best job they can do. But if anybody thinks the US government can actually pull this off for any length of time they and then we are going to be sadly mistaken IMO.

There will be mistakes made, kids are going to be hurt either through neglect or any number of ways and the US government, us, we have taken responsibility for these children. So all of those folks just tickled pink with tough guy Donald and this inane approach to this problem, get out your checkbooks. I suspect the US government is going to end up getting its pants sued off as well as the private contractor organizations that are on the front lines of this mess. Not to say they are not trying. I suspect many of them are doing as good a job as they can do. But we are now taking 50 children a day. That is 1,500 kids a month. There is simply no chance that this does not turn into buckets of law suits because stuff is going to happen. The kids will get the wrong meds or no meds. They will end up getting injured while under our jurisdiction and control in any number of ways and we have taken responsibility for them. That is were the fanciful notion that it is the parents fault breaks down. At the point where we take control of those kids, its our responsibility. Get out your checkbooks folks.

Just the care is going to be astronomically expensive even while mistakes will be made and injuries and damage to children happens.

Oh by the way, as I mentioned before, its not going to work either. Trump is not going to get the only Immigration bill he will sign regardless of holding yet another group of people hostage to get it.
