GOP senator says Republicans in 'cult-like situation' with Trump

Senator Bob Corker (R/Tenn)

6/13/18

Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker ramped up his criticism of his Republican colleagues Wednesday, railing on GOP leadership for not wanting to take on President Donald Trump on core Republican issues like trade. "We're in a strange place. It's becoming a cultish thing isn't it?" the Tennessee Republican told reporters. "It's not a good place for any party to have a cult-like situation as it relates to a President that happens to be purportedly of the same party." On Tuesday, Corker gave an animated speech on the Senate floor when he was stymied, saying he GOP colleagues were concerned because "we might poke the bear!" Corker said Wednesday his comments don't apply to all Republican members, but he said "leadership in general" is not willing to poke the bear "because it's all about the next election." "To have an administration that wakes up every day on an ad hoc basis just making stuff up as they go along with no coherency to it -- I think us having to weigh in on that would actually cause them to have to think about what they're doing versus, 'Well, I'm upset with X today so I'll do this,'" Corker said. In addition to the fight over trade, Corker also brushed aside the President's tweets Wednesday morning declaring that North Korea was 'no longer a nuclear threat.' "Well, that would be hyperbole," Corker said. "The President has a tendency, time to time" to make ad hoc comments, he added. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn also pushed back on Trump's tweets, emphasizing that it's only the start of negotiations with Pyongyang.

Corker is spot-on. The 115th GOP Congress IS cult-like, afraid to do the right thing for fear of upsetting President Tweet, thereby enabling all of the shady excesses of the Trump administration.

Now people who don’t oppose everything Trump does are a “cult”. SMH. When you folks get your head into something you sure do it all the way.

The recent summit saw Trump do a lot of things that fly in the face of supposed Republican core foriegn policy values.

As much as I agree with Corker's various takes on Trumpism and Trump, I just can't bring myself to overlook the fact that he and a host of other Trump critics were complicit in his rise. And they only seem to become vocal once it's clear that their political careers are nearing an end. But to take on the substance of the OP, it really has been remarkable to watch the "Trump effect" and its reach into nearly every aspect of American society and culture. Three years ago I thought the guy was a clown, but he, his most ardent worshipers, and our incompetent media have propelled him to near-iconic status...and it's had a deleterious effect on everything and everyone it's touched. The left and right are both acting as though they've lost their damned minds. Tribalism and suspicion of "out groups" seem to me to be the highest they've been in my life. And Congress, particularly the House, seem absolutely paralyzed by him. It's remarkable. Sure the 40% who love him and their stupid frogs and other memes are having the time of their lives, but American society is in a bad place--which is especially odd considering the strength of the economy.

Twisting not opposing anything into not opposing everything was really clever on your part. Totally fooled people into thinking the OP was actually saying that everyone who doesn't oppose everything is in a cult.

That was sarcasm.

Liberals are dedicated. Gotta give'em that.

Here is what makes it a cult.

1. The GOP doesn't believe in tariffs yet they don't stand up to Trump when he imposes tariffs on our allies. Tariffs are just taxes on imported goods. Everyone is afraid of the cult leader. No one has any principles.

2. Trump has no coherent position on trade. He said NAFTA and TPP were bad. Then he says he wants all Tariffs on all sides dropped. Huh? Most Trump cult members don't understand what an enormous contradiction that is. If you hate NAFTA and TPP it's because you think foreign competition is bad. You think low-cost labor makes it impossible for American companies to compete. So, you like tariffs. Dropping all tariffs would be like NAFTA and TPP on steroids. So, what are Trump's beliefs about trade? There are none. There are just the incoherent whims of a cult leader.

3. Why does he want Russia back in the G8? He says Obama was soft and let Putin take Crimea. But Obama and allies punished Russia by throwing them out of the G8. Trump is being softer by removing Russia's punishment and accepting their annexation of Crimea. It's incoherent. This is cult leader gibberish that only cult members understand.

I'll give credit where credit is due. He's one of the more creative Trumpers on this board.

That's not what you said, but ok.

Trump met Kim with no pre-conditions, decided to cancel military exercises, and has started talking about pulling troops out of the region.

Any other President...even Republican presidents...would of been ripped apart by those things. Oh, and Trump came back with a pretty vague "agreement".

The reason you should check out the responses to Obama saying he'd meet with Kim is the Republican values is it's a laundry list of how Republicans have conducted foreign policy at least since Reagan.

Denuclearization was the pre-condition.

I can forgive those who say it was a mistake to vote for or support Trump in 2016. We all make mistakes. It's the hardcore supporters of today who have chosen to destroy this nation.
