GENEVA (Reuters) - Poverty in the United States is extensive and deepening under the Trump administration whose policies seem aimed at removing the safety net from millions of poor people, while rewarding the rich, a U.N. human rights investigator has found.

Philip Alston, U.N. special rapporteur on extreme poverty, called on U.S. authorities to provide solid social protection and address underlying problems, rather than “punishing and imprisoning the poor”.

Under Trump the rich get richer & the poor get poorer. Who would have thought that when they voted in 2016?

Yup. This last tinkle-down tax deal further separated those with the most from those with the least. Meanwhile, we've revived debtor imprisonment. We're even taking the drug offenders released from prison to relieve overcrowding and making them caretakers in hospice and care homes where they work 16-hour days and get paid nothing except the drugs they steal that's meant for the old folks they care for. What a world.

Only Progressives and like-minded Left-Leaning Liberals actually think that the U.N. is an honest arbiter of what is right and what is wrong.

We foot the bill for many member nations and are still the largest contributor of funding for the organization itself.

What we get in exchange is the dubious privilege of hosting a group of people representing nations who envy, despise, and/or hate us and can use every method offered by membership to knock us.

So forgive me if I, for one, could care less what some U.N. "Special rapporteur" has to say about the USA regardless of who is in the President's Office. :coffeepap:

However, the data from the U.S. Census Bureau he cited covers only the period through 2016
Thanks, President Obama!

There are going to be a lot more Americans joining them in the near future

The rich have been getting richer and the poor poorer for a very long time...you do know this right?

I'll pay attention to what the UN has to say right after I get through polishing my nails.

This is is a trend that has been going on for quite some time. Neither party actually wants to change it because it benefits those already in power.

I have to say, that I've never seen Reuters publish an article that the title and conclusion are completely discredited by and within the exact same article, until now:

However, the data from the U.S. Census Bureau he cited covers only the period through 2016, and he gave no comparative figures on the extent of poverty before and after Trump came into office in January 2017.

Thanks, President Obama!

So the data is from before Trump took office, yet the U.N. human rights investigator blames this on the Trump administration?

If so, then that would appear to be down right dishonest to the point of lying, a misrepresentation of the facts on the part of the U.N. human rights investigator, wouldn't it?

The poor have it better now than at any point in human history. There was a time when poor meant not knowing when your next meal was, now it is seeking healthcare because of obesity. I grew up poor and it is significantly better now than what is just 30 years or so ago.

They may have less money, but vastly higher quality of life.

This is the same group that place countries, that publicly beat and/or behead their own citizens for accusations of religious crimes, onto the UN Human Rights Commission.

Then why are they so often so miserable and empty now when this was often not the case back when we were better?

OOOOPSS!

Well said.

OOOOPSS!

They aren't. You're just focusing on areas you didn't focus on before, using a lens that wasn't available then.

This is is a trend that has been going on for quite some time. Neither party actually wants to change it because it benefits those already in power.

Yep, so long as congress critters enjoy a re-election rate above 90% then there is no reason to change what works so well for them.

They aren't. You're just focusing on areas you didn't focus on before, using a lens that wasn't available then.

You lost me.

I also wonder why someone who claims to live in Australia claims to know more than me here.

OOOOPSS!

Envy and Jealousy with demagogues that prey on those emotions to continually try to divide the poor and middle class against the rich for political power. Not to mention with the level of technology we have today that wealth is almost flaunted in front of us daily in ads and other media.

Republican party line!
"You don't know how good you got it being poor"!

You are welcome to point at any time in human history that the poor have it better than how it is right now. Hell, I wouldn't trade my poor/middle class life for any king of the past. Would you?

You lost me.

Thirty years ago you wouldn't know all the sob stories going on, because cable and the internet didn't cover them. Now you have sob stories coming at you from every direction, 24/7, along with weather calamities every second to worry about.

It's almost like Reuters is doing some kind of lab experiment to see how many people only read the headline. :lamo
