Iran has kept its nuclear program within the main restrictions imposed by the 2015 nuclear deal with major powers despite the U.S. pullout from the agreement, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said on May 24. In its first such report since U.S. President Donald Trump announced Washington's withdrawal earlier this month, the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran had complied with limits on the level to which it can enrich uranium, its stock of enriched uranium, and other items. The IAEA said Iran's stock of enriched uranium has stayed within the 300-kilogram limit set out in the deal under which Iran limited its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

The UN/IAEA latest report states that Iran is in compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) Agreement signed by Iran and the P5+1 in Vienna on 14 July 2015.

Is that the argument?

(I guess that is a question to Trump supporters and/or rip up the deal supporters... the difference between saying Iran is out of compliance vs. the deal itself being “not good.”)

That is the argument for me and it was before there was such a thing as president Trump. What we hear now as defense of Obama/Kerry doing this deal was that they HOPED/EXPECTED that ending sanctions would bring Iran back as a reliable country. BTW they were willing to bet a second holocaust they were right.

You don't have to be a Trump supporter to be skeptical of such an assumption. Many Americans would probably say its a shame that Iran dropped a bomb on Israel, what is for dinner.

So really the question has two parts. One, did this deal slow down Iran’s ambitions for these weapons? Two, did this deal do anything to make Iran easier to deal with in the International stage?

If the going assumption is ‘no’ on both counts then Obama/Kerry made a political decision out of this. Regardless it does seem that since Iran cannot stop talking about Israel then the next question is isolation of Iran will lead to what?

(Likely answer... Russia.)

The chance of the people of Iran choosing a different government is materially greater with sanctions than without. Russia is a strawman. They don't have the economy to help Iran out of their mess. As a matter of fact they are competitors with the only thing Iran exports other than terrorism. That is oil. Lets remember that if Obama/Kerry were not so stupid, the sanctions were already in place and the world was mostly complying.

Obama threw Iran a life-line. Who knows why, perhaps we should ask Al Sharpton or Rev. Wright.

The sanctions were not working. They were on the path to a nuclear weapon. Now they are not. Its is that simple

Ho do you define the sanctions not working. How do you now that they are not working on a nuclear weapons since we can't review military sites per the agreement. We know they ARE continuing work on a delivery system which you need for a nuclear system. What time is left on the agreement until the "sunset" provisions are active. Obama did NOT achieve stopping the nuclear program just slowing it down short-term with the strategy beyond that. If Trump gave that deal to NK you would be crapping all over it and so would I.

They were getting sanctions and they were well on the path to a nuclear weapon. Everyone agrees on that. We did inspect the Panchin military base which is the only one the inspectors asked to inspect. It was working by EVERY measure

Since we agree the sanctions were working -- why was there this pressing need from many conservatives that we needed to strike Iran now -- or as McCain put it, bomb-bomb -bomb..bomb-bomb Iran

In contrast, NK actually fires nukes, threatens South Korea and the US -- but its ok to negotiate a deal with them with very little concessions -- why not just continue the sanctions on them?

I believe people will project whatever they want to project on any possible peace deal with either Iran or NK based on if its their guy doing the deal

Can't speak for conservatives. McCain is a nutjob who would bomb just about anyone. Should have left the sanctions on. Let the youth of Iran put in place a rational government. Problem solved.

Some republicans love war.

I believe American foreign policy suffers from severe short memory and severe narcissism -- we screwed it up when we overthrew the person Iran had there in the first place and it bit us -- and we still feel we can "fix" Iran by assuming the youth there will put in place a rational government -- except we are the ones who get to determine what is rational for Iranians -- the audacity of that is comical

Willful ignorance is what it is, we Americans are great at that game.

So you are saying McCain was right. Perhaps we should have simply wiped Iran off the map.
