Jeff Flake to Harvard Law School graduates: 'We may have hit bottom'

Senator Jeff Flake (R/AZ)

5/23/18

Sen. Jeff Flake abandoned subtlety in his latest rhetorical broadside at President Donald Trump on Wednesday, telling Harvard Law School's newest graduates the nation's leader "seemingly has a bottomless appetite for destruction and division." "Our presidency has been debased. By a figure who seemingly has a bottomless appetite for destruction and division. And only a passing familiarity with how the Constitution works," Flake said at the event ahead of graduation in Cambridge, Mass. He later continued, "We need each other, and it is a scoundrel who would prosper politically by turning us against each other." As always, Flake did not mention Trump by name, but left little doubt about the target of his criticism. "There are times when circumstances may call on you to risk your career in favor of your principles," Flake said. "But you, and your country, will be better for it. You can go elsewhere for a job, but you cannot go elsewhere for a soul."

What an amazing show of courage. Who else would have the guts to attack Trump while making a speech at Harvard.

He's a bad parent. Graduation speeches are supposed to be uplifting and motivational. These Democrats are very poor role models for scaring these young kids. In very poor taste and pathetic.

Political speeches shouldn't be made at these type of events. It just really shouldn't. For many, this event is a highlight of their entire life and liberals like Jeff Frosted Flake and Hillary Clinton are just ruining it.

The FAILED INTELLIGENTSIAS! principles suck ass, fidelity to their Dim-Wit principles will not help us.

Some of us are beyond help!

Jeff, the Senator who is resigning ahead of probable defeat. Former candidate for a place in the establishment.

Bye bye Jeff.

Harvard Law is a big part of the problem, for instance they have been very influential in the make-up of SCOTUS over the last many decades and just look at what a wreck it is.

But reforms are possible!

But we have to want to!

At this level—at the level of action—Senator Flake has done painfully little. Yes, he spoke out. But he is more than a voice. He is a United States Senator. He holds an office of rare political significance, with direct power to investigate and oversee the executive branch and, perhaps more importantly, to cast and withhold votes that create law and gatekeep executive and judicial offices. Senators are defined by their votes, and their ability to use those votes for leverage: to coordinate with like-minded colleagues, seize opportunities for negotiation and compromise, and transform political momentum into action on their own priorities. The Senate in which Flake serves also happens to have a narrow margin of majority. His individual vote carries more leverage than most senators’ at most times in this country’s history. Few people have greater power or opportunity to steer the course of our government, or to force a change in our politics.

But Senator Flake has apparently chosen not to force any change. He has voted to confirm every one of Trump’s executive appointments, with the recent exception of Gina Haspel. He has voted to advance every one of Trump’s Congressional enablers’ most prized legislative priorities. And he has not a modicum of executive oversight, ethics compliance, or policy change to show for it.
Why I Am Disappointed with Jeff Flake | The Harvard Law Record

Yep, and it must be mentioned that he has also failed out of his office as the conventional wisdom is that he can not get reelected because he has lost the support of his constituents.

THis so-called courage of his is the "courage" of a loser....or one who never tried......but here he is calling out others for not trying.

Yea. He can see Trumps toxicity firsthand. Any Republican with any sense is getting out before the entire rotten GOP edifice comes tumbling down.

Those damn SMART PEOPLE!!!!!

The guy does not live in reality. The u.s economy is booming. Employers badly need employees but too many people are employed!

Greatest time to join the work force perhaps in the history of this country.

Kinda like Trump whining to those graduating Coast Guard cadets about how badly he's being treated? That kind of uplifting?

Depends on they approach it IMO. Corey Booker spoke at my son's graduation. His story I thought was uplifting and great. So that is a good way to do it. Flake is just that a Flake. Also a cheap opportunist looking to primary Trump. I agree that was the wrong stage for his doing that. That being said, Harvard knew what they were getting when they asked him to speak.

I hope more people find their courage. Bannon is saying Trump will soon fire Rosenstein.

Oh they have been assured that they are all right....

Lied to mostly, what they actually tend to be are people who have allowed themselves to be poorly molded by the failed University.

Rush made me laugh with a metaphor he made. He likened trump to rodney danger field in Caddy shack. **** harvard
