The European Union's (EU) top energy official on Saturday sought to reassure Tehran that Europe is committed to the Iran nuclear deal despite the United States' exit earlier this month. “We have sent a message to our Iranian friends that as long as they are sticking to the (nuclear) agreement the Europeans will... fulfill their commitment. And they said the same thing on the other side,” the European Commissioner for Energy and Climate, Miguel Arias Canete, said at a news conference, according to Reuters. The EU, once the largest buyer of Iranian oil, also hopes to increase trade with Iran, Canete said. “We will try to intensify our flows of trade that have been very positive for the Iranian economy,” he said. Iran’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi said Tehran hoped that the EU would rescue the deal after Trump decided to withdraw from the agreement. "We hope their efforts materialize," Salehi said at a news conference, according to Reuters. "America’s actions ... show that it is not a trustworthy country in international dealings." Salahi has said that if the European nations fail to salvage the deal, Iran could pursue a number of options, including resuming their 20 percent uranium enrichment, Reuters reported.

Ooops. This wasn't supposed to happen. Europe was supposed to buckle and crumble under Trumps threats of sanctions. Stay tuned.

EU statement is well timed though I think they will be called upon to repeat it often and the road will get harder for them. Trump has already proven that there is no norm he will topple over, even no law he won't break in order to get his way.

There is one disturbing aspect of this. In fact there are many, but this one might be the. most obvious to see in this media and video biased world. Notice how many of the film industry's efforts these days are focused on past glories from the UK as an example or Europe generally? Now in the case of the UK those past glories if really viewed honestly relate to WW2. Other than that, the UK was part of the mania that drove WW1 and was a ruthlessly persistent imperialist for most of its history. However, the best parts of their history appear worthy of retelling at this point because nobody wants to hear about us at this point.

Nobody cares about a country that claims to be the leader of the free world that puts a Donald Trump in the WH. While Trump's followers will immediately jerk their knees to their jaws and claim that "we don't care that nobody cares". That is a painfully naive view of our actual position in this world and really even a painful view of where we were and what we were at our best. Most of these absurd views are a direct result of lousy civics courses and even worse history courses.

Stick with the deal, don't stick with the deal. It hardly matters. Iran will continue its work toward nukes.

It’s time the Europeans take greater responsibility for Europe. We’ll still have to do the hard stuff. The end game is to forment regime change. They are still on their “Caliphate” kick.

The time will come when the Iranian population has had enough. They are young and pro-Western although they can't display that too openly. When the real unrest starts we need to be helping the people there to the extent that we can. If they can flip the military, it's all over for the mullahs.

And who is it that is supposed to foment regime change?

Why didn't you continue on your thread from 4 days ago Thread: Europe, Iran seek to save nuclear deal after US pullout,
or did it not garner enough excitement for your liking?!?

Forgot about that one. Why? You miss me? Lol.

But if you stick with the deal you have inspections which make it more difficult for them to work towards nukes.

I don't see how you can develop nuclear weapons without testing them. You have to not only create working devices but you have to miniaturize them so they can fit into warheads. How do you that without testing?

There were no unannounced inspections allowed or inspections of military facilities. The deal was toothless.

Then we should have sat down with our Allies and formulated a better deal, that is not what happened nor will it due to the stupidity displayed by our "Leadership".

I've heard that the EU and Iran will deal strictly with Euro's for payments between them and not use dollars.

The EU is a sovereign national body, let them do what they want. If they want to display their naive ignorance to the world in trusting Iran and not taking a harder stance against an insane theocracy hellbent on killing the Jews and bringing the rise of the Islamic apocalypse let them do so.

Good for Europe. America first = world leadership vacuum. Others are stepping in to fill the void. Iran requires constant monitoring but sticking to the agreement (both sides) is better than another war in the ME. At present the only one threatening military action is the Trump Administration, even Trump Fans and GOPers advocate “regime change”.

I’m hoping Europe can make it work in Iran without the US.

Iran will never agree to a deal that actually stops them from getting nukes. They agreed to this one because it merely sets a timetable. It doesn't stop anything.
