I was watching Jordan Klepper on The Opposition talking about SuperShe Island, where no men are allowed, last week. This island is a unique example of female male relations, although the inhabitants are generically female. I want to discuss why it is not a hateful concept, and what it means to ban men from this island. Secondly, I think this island provides some insight about female leadership which might be generalized.
Since I'm not allowed to go there, I will just analyze it from afar. The motivation for discussing discrimination against men is to explain how women can empower one another without men. Women have shown us just how important this quality is. We even refer to it as a feminine quality. When a man has many friends with whom he can empathize, he might be 'in touch with his feminine side.' Therefore, women who go here to build relationships or perhaps freely express themselves individually do not necessarily hate men.
Compare this island to a fictional white nation. The island is off the coast of Finland, a country which has a primarily Caucasian ethnic composition. A white nation which bans all other ethnic groups is racist, but it is not hateful by default. However, it is unlikely that such a sovereign nation could become both established and recognized by other nations, and SuperShe Island is a private island governed by Finland.
Because a pregnant woman should theoretically be allowed to become a member of this exclusive island, it is possible that such a woman may not disclose the sex of her male child. Technically, boys are not men, so it is also theoretically possible for children to exist on this island. We have seen this dynamic work in the past, when women share resources and help one another. It is an important part of society. But is it mature to have a fantasy of escaping adult men? Suppose a pregnant woman gave birth to a boy on the island. In order to better include the mother, her child should also be permitted to stay. The island is specifically marketed to corporate groups as a retreat for women. The primary purposes of SuperShe Island is to exclude men, and its secondary purpose is to leave obligations of adulthood behind.
A hierarchy still exists in this island. The founder or some other entity might act as a guide for new arrivals, and some women probably cater to guests, like housekeeping at a hotel. Since no man is in charge of this island, a woman has to lead in some capacity. I wonder if there is an all-female EMS squad on site. Hopefully these guests are able to generate some parallel leadership skills or develop new skills. If their skills are applicable in the rest of society then they should be able to lead men.
Now, this island is unique because it is different than the rest of the world. Because the rest of the world (for the most part) is inhabited by men to some degree, any man is the average representative of a population which is geographically complementary to SuperShe Island. What this island should tell us is that men are prototypical human beings, relative to an inhabitant of SuperShe Island. I think it's important to remember that many of these female guests do not hate men just because they go to an all-female island. In fact, they deserve it. Women deserve women's rights, peace of mind, and a vacation from work. But women's rights pertain to women only, and not necessarily men. SuperShe island may be a special island, but it does not govern the rest of the world. We should be mindful of the fact that women's rights are deserved, but not misandry by default, and that sometimes the two are inaccurately combined under one term.
