If a POTUS needs to take the Fifth he should resign, right?

that is your opinion

and you know what they say about opinions, dont you?

we have ways of dealing with presidents who cant do their job....legally and constitutionally

can we let the process go that way?

That's not what your false god Trump said. He said anyone that pleads the fifth has something to hide and if president should resign.

But he's not a regular citizen. He's the president of the USA. Answering questions is part of his job. If he can't do his job he should resign.

Are you saying you believe the president should be allowed not to answer questions posed to him by citizens? That's crazy. You're essentially saying that government has the right not to answer questions during an investigation. He's not only a private citizen, he's the head of our government. As the head of our government he is obligated to answer questions during any investigation. If he can't do that, he should step down.

yes...i am saying that

doesnt matter his job

the constitution protects all....rich, poor, high, low

one of the beauties of the document and this country imo

no man can be forced to testify against himself....PERIOD

as plain as it can be

any other constitutional rights you want to throw out while you are at it?

i mean Trump is in office....who knows what rules will get in your way next week, or next month?

Does he have the right to plead the 5th, absolutely? Will he, if he is smart. Will it hurt him politically, only with those who already think he is unfit to be president. Trump supporters will keep saying it is a witch hunt and he should take the 5th, no matter what Trump said about those taking the 5th. If I was his lawyer and he has to testify before a Grand Jury as most legal scholars say, I would tell him to just keep saying he is taking the 5th. It will serve him in the long run. Will he do so, who can tell. What is interesting is that in a Federal Grand Jury room the jurors can ask questions of the one being interviewed. Wonder what they will ask him?

not my false god, or someone i voted for

why does everyone on this site seem to think if you defend the constitution, you are a trump bot

it is freaking ridiculous....and a really crappy way to debate in my opinion

what Trump said before i really dont care....he is a liar, and has been a liar....i dont expect that to change...do you?

the question is, do you hold the laws of this country higher than your political beliefs?

I hold Trump and Trump supporters accountable for their words.

I do not know why you do - Trumpkins certainly don't.

well that seems kinda stupid doesnt it?

since you know Trump is a liar, why would you try and hold him to his word?

that makes no sense at all....

every other thread on this site is all about Trump lying, and yet you want to hold him to his word.....:lamo

Yep I will continue to show that Trump supporters are liars and should not be believed in anything they say or do.

As citizens, we have a right to invoke the Fifth Amendment to protect ourselves from self-incrimination. But should a president be protected from self-incrimination?

As citizens, we also have a right to get answers from our leaders. Can a leader just say, "Sorry, I can't answer that question because it may incriminate me?" That sounds crazy.

If a POTUS can't answer questions for fear of self-incrimination he should resign then invoke The Fifth. He can no longer serve the people by being transparent and answering their questions honestly. Trump should answer the prosecutor's written questions or resign. Period.

If true, then we would never have had a single president serve out his elected term of office. No even our most sacred heroes.

I agree with you. He has constitutional rights. I never claimed he should be forced to testify. I claimed he should resign if he can't do his job. Do you deny that being answerable to the American people is part of his job?

If he must take the Fifth and he won't resign then he should be impeached for dereliction of duty. Being accountable to the American people and answering questions is part of his job.

Why do you keep shifting the question to his constitutional rights? That's not in question.

He has the right to remain silent but he doesn't have the right to remain president.

Huh? Bill Clinton didn't take The Fifth. Ronald Reagan didn't invoke the Fifth during Iran Contra, he just claimed he couldn't remember. Has any president ever invoked the Fifth?

so what you are saying is this

from now on, whenever any question comes up regarding a president, and something he may or may not have done...we can call him in front of a panel to testify to answer question the OTHER side may have as to how he proceeded in a matter....is that the way you want this to work in the future?

And no...i dont think that way. I think the president answers to us ONLY on ballot day....and once the american people make that decision, it is his/her country to run. If congress believes the President has run amok then THEY have the ability to impeach said president. That is the laws on the books, and the ways we have addressed problems in the past 250+ years

I dont want to change it for one liar in chief....we will get through this....and will be stronger for it in the long run.

Hope that makes sense to you....

nope he doesn't have to resign. sorry he has the same constitutional protections as anyone else.

What crime is he answering to?

What charges have been made?

That's exactly how it has always worked! We haver never had a president take the Fifth.

I'm just holding Trump and Trump supporters accountable to their word.
But Trump's word is not law, to which I'm sure we both breathe a sigh of relief.

Your argument is silly. You can point out hypocrisy without becoming a hypocrite yourself.

Remaining president is not a constitutional right.

No one is denying his right to remain silent! How many times do I have to repeat that?!

If the president cannot answer questions relating to his job then he should resign from his job. Answering questions is part of his job.

Consider the absurdity of a president who can refuse to answer questions: "Sir, did you take a bribe from the Chinese ambassador?"

"I plead the Fifth on the grounds that I may incriminate myself."

"Sir, did you order the CIA to spy on your political opponents?"

"I plead the Fifth on the grounds that I may incriminate myself."

That's absurd! I'm not saying he doesn't have this right, I'm saying a president who needs to invoke the Fifth should resign. And if he doesn't resign he should be impeached. The government has to be answerable to people. The government cannot refuse to answer questions. Trump the man has the right to refuse to answer questions but the office of the president does not have the right. It has an obligation to answer questions. If the office of the president cannot meet its obligations the office holder must resign or be removed.

Being a President doesn't and shouldn't deprive an American citizen of their rights. Just because Trump is President, it does not mean he should not be afforded Constitutional protections and the very idea is rather silly.

Now, should the American citizenry look at a President who won't tell the truth because it may incriminate him on the issue for which he is being questioned and be extremely wary? Absolutely. But the President is still a citizen and still deserves Constitutional protections.

Yes. But it is absolutely astounding to me that the same people who were literally losing their marbles because Obama had said "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" that didn't turn out to be true in occasional cases, are perfectly OK now with this level of blatant lying from a con man. Trump's not even trying anymore. Because he knows his base doesn't care about facts or the truth or morality or how much he flip flops on any given issue. This is not about that. It never was.

This is ultimately about cultural anxiety and paranoia from traditional whites about losing cultural hegemony and fear of change, and Trump has touched that raw nerve. Nothing else matters now. They have circled the wagons.

Well we will never know if he pleads the fifth, now will we? Are you OK with that? Why or why not?

You're way ahead of the thread and topic.

Maybe you can sign up somewhere for breaking news alerts then come back when it does happen.

If it does occur. Because it has not occurred. Trust me on this thx.

....says Mr. "Lock Her Up!!!" himself. :lamo

Probably the best, longest-lasting legacy to the Trump era might be the manner in which it completely, and forever, ripped away:

1. any and all shreds of ethical, moral and cultural superiority from the "family values" and religious conservative movements in American society.
2. any and all remaining shreds of "small government conservatism" and "fiscal conservatism" from the modern GOP.

The Conservative Movement in America in the post-Trump era will be left with two options for the future:

Option 1: Openly embrace its agenda of white racial resentment and cultural fear, and hope to win elections as the party of white cultural and corporate nationalism (i.e. Fascism).
Option 2: Openly denounce the above and rebuild itself based upon true, traditional small government conservatism (which is NOT the same as "government is bad").

The OP claims Trump should testify. For what?

What crime has been committed?

Does it matter ? NO !!

The question is valid and yes any pres. resigns before even taking the 5th.

Every lawyer/judge knows that when any witness (or certain depositions) takes the 5th, while it is

not directly evidentiary, the jury can still infer about the guilt behind it.

Seems to me IIRC, a Clinton staffer took the 5th and did resign.

I know the right begs to be partisan here but surely you've heard about the discovery stage ?

That's where we are...get over it.
