As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34? [W:59]

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

my parents were raised in 'houses' that were well under 1000sf no bathroom just an outhouse.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

lol, no

Today’s new homes are 1,000 square feet larger than in 1973, and the living space per person has doubled over last 40 years

while families get smaller

Yeah, you got me on that one, lol. I had been reading a bunch of stories about shrinking house sizes...but failed to realize that trend started in 2017, and houses were smaller in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Course, MY house is small....made in 1953, lol.

Someone with a decent education (who is not an idiot) should be able to pull $16 and hour in 2018. Or at least close to it.

THIS, however, is patently false. That's OVER the median salary for most states.

Please LEARN how to MATH, ok?

If someone worked full time for $16 an hour, as you said , how much will they make in a month? The answer is NOT $1800 so your maths are incorrect

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Why do boomers let their kid's live with them so long?

"As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?"

Of course it would be circumstantial but i see no logical or rational issue with it, in general. Guess it would depend on how one defines "live with"
Are there scenarios i would be against it? of course. Are there plenty of others I wouldn't, again of course.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Let's do some math for the stupid kids of the world who think they cannot afford to live away from their parent's.

Example: Apparently, average rent in nashville for a 3 bedroom apartment is 1,500$

That is average, you can get a place cheaper but for this we can work with the average.

Split that 3 ways and it is $500 a month.

Get a job that pays $1,800 after taxes and you are left with $1,300.

Take off $300 for student loans and you still have $1000 every month.

For a job that pays $1,500 a month you end up with $700, which is plenty for someone young.

In your example of 1800 a month $1000 left over after rent let's break that down some more.
$250 per week left after rent
Transportation to and from work only what $70 week
Food no restaurants 3 meals a day $50 week
Gas, electric, water, smart phone plan, no internet, no cable so maybe redbox or a streaming service for some entertainment. Oh right can't stream without internet. $40 wk

There down to $90 before health insurance, clothing, shoes laundry what can they save? Where is there future? How long do they live with 2 roommates?
I guess that's why folks are waiting so long to have kids how the hell do you plan for a future or even think about one.

Then again my kids were making that kind of money senior year in high school by sophomore year in college they made more than I ever did. I have no dog in this fight. But it's sad that some can't see there may be a problem when someone goes to 4 years of college and can't support themselves. I see there may be a societal problem but I don't know how to fix it.

And to the comment above about generational families...i ain't mexican and we have always lived in generational homes. We don't throw away our old people and they teach us lot....thank god.

Compassion and love.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Thank you very much that is kind of you to say, but truth be told it was their mother that was a good parent and anything I know on the subject learned from her....

BTW does your name come from the best television series of all time, FIREFLY?

No worries, you're welcome. They did really touch me.

I've never seen that series, I'm not even sure if we had that there, I missed it if we did. The Serenity reference comes from the Jedi code.

On what planet do you live, lol?

Let's keep the baiting little add-on's out of the thread so this doesn't spiral into something that needs more than an in-thread warning

Firefly only ran for one season and became popular later, then they made a movie "serenity".

Serenity is the name of the Firefly class space ship they travel in.

I highly recommend it, however do not watch the movie before the series as they were not made in that order.

If you do see it let me know what you think.

Edit : sorry for going off topic...
