As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34? [W:59]

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Parents fail these days, and kids this days are bunch of idiots. Thanks God im a rare breed in this new generation.
No you’re not. The arrogant belief that you’re so much better than your peers is all too common. :)

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Thank you for.your kind thoughts. She is now fourteen, I have probably raised her more as a boy as that is what I knew ( she can throw a knife just as well as me and shoots better than her brothers).

It would have helped a lot had the boys still been home. Even with one in Alaska another in Colorado we are still all very close.

I know some families that could never live under the same roof, but for us would have been fine, and I understand how it can be very beneficial.

I'm sorry for your loss. Your posts in this thread have really touched me. I can feel the love you have for your kids. They are lucky to have you as their Dad.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Parents are pathetic nowdays....

My dad NEVER spoiled me, especially me being a BOY it was a NO-NO in my fathers eyes.

Now, I look at my brothers (WHOM) are FATHERS and yet FAIL to PARENT their KIDS the right way..

Their kids are all stupid & do stupid ****, throw things, talk bad, and my brothers just LAUGHS it off... like its FUNNY my SISTERE IN LAWS (brothers wives) are much more FATHERS than my BROTHERS...its pathetic!

No it isnt arrogance, its reality....

I’m 28 and I have everything that my friend do not have, because all they wanna do is complain and be lazy..this generation is bunch of self entitled idiots who want everything handed it out to them.

Thank you very much that is kind of you to say, but truth be told it was their mother that was a good parent and anything I know on the subject learned from her....

BTW does your name come from the best television series of all time, FIREFLY?

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Housing costs aren't ridiculous everywhere, granted where they are high, it's a big problem.

True. But they are in most places that have the most jobs. Or maybe affordable if they want to commute 4 hrs a day

If you were that great, you’d be able to attract a better class of friends. ;)

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Not a parent, but in my late 20's (during the great recession) I had to move into my mom's for a little over a year until I was back on my feet.

Told myself I'd never do that when I left @ 18. Wasn't good for our relationship either, never going back.

That is what a parent is for. They are there to help you if you stumble which can happen.

To be the crutch from cradle to grave is not the way it is supposed to be.

If the kid can't make enough to get out on their own, they are doing something wrong.

If circumstances have changed in the housing market, then the kid should adapt to those changes, not just give up and stay with mommy.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

In many cultures families remain together to support one another.

Home is the place you go that when you arrive they have to let you in...

That is the way it is in Mexico and that produces a lot of losers that can't take care of themselves through their whole life.

So sorry for your loss....you did not raise her like a boy you raised her and she will thank you everyday. My dad had 3 girls I can shoot better than most, fish, ride a horse fix my own car and could probably build a house from the ground up. No one would guess I grew up in a major city.
Don't worry your daughter will be better off than most.
I wish my kids would come home and stay. I want a big ****ing compound with all of us living on it!
But alas they have their own lives so over the years I've "adopted" a whole bunch of young people.
Right now I have Danny and his grand Pyrenees (lola) staying with me he's 29 a military vet on crutches really messed up his hip over in Afghanistan. He's been here almost a year...great young man with **** parents.
I'm not a boomer but hell yeah I want them back!
Think I'll cry more when Lola leaves.

Thank you, I have tried. She has also gotten very good at sparing, I shadow fight but I encourage her to go full contact, she is beginning to get fast. I think she will be just fine, as she is also an honor roll student who gets pissed if she gets an A-.

I don't know what I will do when she is gone.

I know what you mean about dogs, I had to put down my best lab on the fourth of July years ago. My son later told me it was the first time he had seen me cry. The greatest unfairness in life is that dogs do not live as long as we do.

Your not trying your doing....no matter what she will be fine. Give yourself some pats we all deserve it every once in awhile!

That is an ignorant statement.

Right when I got out of high school I worked at a canning company. One of my jobs throughout the years was maintenance at the migrant worker camps.

I have never seen people that are more family oriented, or harder workers.

When I first started I worked in the pumpkin fields for a few months, (hardest job I have ever had) and the migrants outworked the locals two to one for half the pay.

They had.little to look forward to other than moving to another crop in another part of the country. But they were happy.

Our country would be in a much better place if more people had family values like they do.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Sure I'd let my kids back. I could then hold it over their heads when I'm 90 and need someone to change my diaper.

I lived in a home with three generations and didn't move out until the day after I got married, at 24 in 1985. Similarly we had three generations living under my roof until just two weeks when the last of mine, she's 28, relocated (at least temporarily) to Hawaii to work on a cruise ship for the next 5 months. What she does after that is an open question but my kids are more than welcome to move back if they needed / wanted to. They'd just have to either work or being going to school - which isn't a problem because they always have anyway.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

It's extremely annoying the people who grew up in a time where school costs very little, you would have a single income and be able to buy a house, a car, have a savings. Now, that's impossible for so many people. Most people barely get by, have no savings, have huge debt. Stop acting like you are so special, you have helped create this mess of letting the rich take all the money

by definition 'the Rich' always have the money... that particular fact is what makes them 'the Rich'. If 'the Rich' did not have the money they would in fact be 'the Poor'.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Many generations under one roof was a common practice not too long ago.

So was outdoor toilets

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Because people have a lot more crap to buy.

Cable bill, cell phone, cell phone bill, internet bill, computer, etc

High paying jobs out of college are just as common/or rare today as back then.

Cut all that extra crap out of your life and you can live.

Cable, Internet, cell, combined, is less than 200 per month, pretty much anywhere.

My student loans are 800 per month.

Try again.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Again, it is not just big cities.

Part of the reason overall cost of living (not just rent, and not just big cities) has gone up is that people "need" more. Digital cable, cell phone, cell phone bill, internet, computer, Xbox all did not exist 40 years ago. Which helps explain how why overall cost of living has gone up.

Also, houses on average are a lot bigger than they were 50 years ago (despite cost of living going up). Which makes it easier for kids today to stay with their parents.

Let's do some math for the stupid kids of the world who think they cannot afford to live away from their parent's.

Example: Apparently, average rent in nashville for a 3 bedroom apartment is 1,500$

That is average, you can get a place cheaper but for this we can work with the average.

Split that 3 ways and it is $500 a month.

Get a job that pays $1,800 after taxes and you are left with $1,300.

Take off $300 for student loans and you still have $1000 every month.

For a job that pays $1,500 a month you end up with $700, which is plenty for someone young.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

Why do boomers let their kid's live with them so long?

I would be as long as

1) They have a job

2) They pay part of the bills with said job

3) They follow my rules.

Anything else and they'd better have an extra-chromosome or some missing limbs before I would let them stay that long.

Re: As a parent, are you okay with letting your child live with you 25-34?

So was outdoor toilets

Still are in very, very many places I visit, boat landings, camp grounds, wayside rests, state parks etc...

Hell in much of my travels I consider a porta potty a huge luxury.

1800 per month, assuming 37.5 hours per week (full time, which is rare), means over 16 per hour.

On what planet do you live, lol?

Lol, house sizes are smaller, and the property they're on is as well.

lol, no

Today’s new homes are 1,000 square feet larger than in 1973, and the living space per person has doubled over last 40 years

housing11-600x400.jpg

In 2013, the average size of new houses built increased to an all-time high of 2,679 square feet (see blue line in top chart), and the median size new home set a new record of 2,491 square feet (see red line in chart). Over the last 40 years, the average home has increased in size by more than 1,000 square feet, from an average size of 1,660 square feet in 1973 (earliest year available from Census) to 2,679 square feet last year. Likewise, the median-size home has increased in size by almost 1,000 square feet, from 1,525 square feet in 1973 to 2,491 last year. In percentage terms, the average home size has increased by 61.4% since 1973, while the median home size increased by 63.3%

while families get smaller

Meanwhile, the average household size has been declining, from 3.01 persons per household on average in 1973 to a new record low of 2.54 persons per household last year, a reduction of almost one-half person per household over the last 40 years (see brown line in top chart).

Someone with a decent education (who is not an idiot) should be able to pull $16 and hour in 2018. Or at least close to it.
