Better government services linked to less religiosity in U.S. and world, study says | Miami Herald

People are less religious when government is bigger, research says.

“If a secular entity provides what people need, they will be less likely to seek help from God or other supernatural entities. Government is the most likely secular provider,” the researchers concluded. “We showed in two cross-sectional analyses, one using world countries and one using states in the United States, that better government services were related to lower levels of religiosity.”

The findings “imply that the government can provide an extra layer of security … that might help people cope with future needs, both expected and unexpected, and as such, might reduce dependence on God or other supernatural entities,” researchers wrote.

Just thought it was interesting.

Everyone puts there faith somewhere, in something, or someone...whether they're willing to admit it or not...not surprised to read this...

Everyone? I don't believe anything based on faith. So where must I be placing my "faith"?

There were huge religious empires in the past, not sure government gets bigger than huge empires led by some monarchy. Were those folk not as religious?

America is a country that would greatly benefit from getting the hell over its unhealthy fascination with religion.

On physics, laws of nature, logic and the dictates of reason, perhaps?

Or was that a rhetorical question? LOL!

Yes, they were big. But did they effectively care for their people?

Some likely did, in the terms of the era they lived in. There was usually some aspect of appealing to the people so you didn't get your head chopped off or anything. Of course, there were despots too, though we see those in many forms of government.

Do you live on an island solely alone? If not, you put your faith in something or someone or both...

Manna from the public sector whenever we cannot rely on Any god!

Really? Your faith is based on reason and evidence? Then I don't think it accurate to call it faith.

Sure it is...that is exactly what faith is...

"Faith is the assured expectation of what is hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities that are not seen." Heb. 11:1

Yea this makes sense. If youre getting everything you crave from society why would you need religion.?

Exactly...that's what a lot of people think...but is their trust misplaced? I think so...
