Between 2003-2009, Chick-fil-A donated $5 million (via the WinShape Foundation, founded by Chick-fil-A owner Truett and his wife) to organizations and religious groups opposed to the LGBT community. Mike Huckabee was a strong public supporter of this policy. Under increasing public pressure, Chick-fil-A released a corporate statement on July 31, 2012, saying, "We are a restaurant company focused on food, service, and hospitality; our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena."
However, Chick-fil-A has never stated that the WinShape Foundation would cease donating to anti-LGBT organizations and it apparently still does so. Chick-fil-A thus saved its franchise brand reputation (and profits) with the 2012 corporate statement, while at the same time quietly maintaining its private support for an anti-gay agenda through the owner's foundation, surreptitious support which it has never categorically denied.
