funny how American policy is OK with gassing Iranians, Iranian civilians even but now we can't handle Assad gassing his own folks.

I guess America really is a two headed monster that doesn't really know what the **** it is doing, with at least one of it's heads up it's ass.

Exclusive: CIA Files Prove America Helped Saddam as He Gassed Iran – Foreign Policy

According to recently declassified CIA documents and interviews with former intelligence officials like Francona, the U.S. had firm evidence of Iraqi chemical attacks beginning in 1983. At the time, Iran was publicly alleging that illegal chemical attacks were carried out on its forces, and was building a case to present to the United Nations. But it lacked the evidence implicating Iraq, much of which was contained in top secret reports and memoranda sent to the most senior intelligence officials in the U.S. government. The CIA declined to comment for this story.

In contrast to today’s wrenching debate over whether the United States should intervene to stop alleged chemical weapons attacks by the Syrian government, the United States applied a cold calculus three decades ago to Hussein’s widespread use of chemical weapons against his enemies and his own people. The Reagan administration decided that it was better to let the attacks continue if they might turn the tide of the war. And even if they were discovered, the CIA wagered that international outrage and condemnation would be muted.

In the documents, the CIA said that Iran might not discover persuasive evidence of the weapons’ use — even though the agency possessed it. Also, the agency noted that the Soviet Union had previously used chemical agents in Afghanistan and suffered few repercussions.

It has been previously reported that the United States provided tactical intelligence to Iraq at the same time that officials suspected Hussein would use chemical weapons. But the CIA documents, which sat almost entirely unnoticed in a trove of declassified material at the National Archives in College Park, Md., combined with exclusive interviews with former intelligence officials, reveal new details about the depth of the United States’ knowledge of how and when Iraq employed the deadly agents. They show that senior U.S. officials were being regularly informed about the scale of the nerve gas attacks. They are tantamount to an official American admission of complicity in some of the most gruesome chemical weapons attacks ever launched.

So, just so I understand this: Because American Foreign Intelligence agencies helped Iraq use chemical weapons against Iranians more than three decades ago, it is hypocritical of the current American administration, policymakers and public to be against the use of chemical weapons against civilians today? I do not understand what point you are trying to make. Are you saying that it is morally acceptable for chemical weapons are being used against civilians? Or perhaps the CIA is somehow behind the chemical weapons being used in Syria?

Because to me this is right up there with saying "America used to be okay with slavery, but now condemns slavery! Hypocritical much?????"

If your point is to look back at the unsavory history of the activities performed by the CIA, that's quite alright. They have often behaved appallingly in retrospect. But what exactly is your thesis statement?

interesting to note that all responses so far are basically giving the US Government at the highest levels (Reagan) a pass on being complicit in the use of Sarin nerve gas by Saddam.

I see what you did there.

I didn't know you were a CT type of guy

head like an ostrich much?

there is enuff documentation by reputable sources to completely blow a ****ty CT outta the water on this subject.

I understand denial is tuff but maybe get some help for that?

If your point is that Reagan, by way of the CIA, OK'd the gassing of Iranians and that we here are somehow OK with that, you are extraordinarily incorrect. The Reagan administration was completely in the wrong for doing so or allowing that to happen.

Iraq couldn't have gassed Iranians, since Iraq had no WMDs. That's been the screed from the Left for YEARS.

I understand it's difficult for you guys to differentiate between time, such as the difference between the 1980s & the 2000s.

I understand that math & rational thought isn't your strong suit so, I'll cut ya some slack there bud.
