After murder rate passes NYC, London Mayor Sadiq Khan calls for sharper knife control

London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced a crackdown on knives Sunday in response to the rising levels of violence in London, which recently surpassed New York City's homicide rate for the first time.

"No excuses: there is never a reason to carry a knife," Khan tweeted. "Anyone who does will be caught, and they will feel the full force of the law."

There have been more than 50 homicides in London so far in 2018, and much of the violence is tied to gangs.

Guns are strictly regulated in the United Kingdom and the rising homicide rate in London is directly attributable to a rise in knife-related crimes, with stabbings claiming at least 31 lives to date in 2018. By contrast, New York — which has a population roughly the same size as London — has seen a steady decline in violent crime.

LOL

I've said for many years, London will be sporks-only. Then people will sharpen the edge of their sporks. Then Londoners will only be allowed to eat with their hands.

"Sharper knife control"

Very nice.

Sounds like prison.

As explained in another thread:

A ban on carrying weapons has always been in place in england.

sword-sticks - a hollow walking stick or cane containing a blade
push daggers
blowpipes (‘blow gun’)
telescopic truncheons - extend automatically by pressing button or spring in the handle
batons - straight, side-handled or friction-lock truncheons
hollow kubotans - a cylinder-shaped keychain holding spikes
shurikens (also known as ‘shaken’, ‘death stars’ or ‘throwing stars’)

And most if not all states have similar varying restrictions on blade weapons that can be carried in public.

I agree the mayor is doing nothing new here.

However there are two parts here, the first; he’s introduced tough, immediate measures to address the violence.

The Mayor is determined to ensure criminals are caught and punished

and the second: but he’s also investing millions in tackling the complex root causes of violent crime to help prevent future deaths.

Here’s what the Mayor is doing:

Where as the lame as pro gun group here only want to concentrate on the first part.

LOL

Many places have control on the types of knifes you can have in your possession. A switch blade knife for one thing.

One of the dumbest laws ever passed. The interstate federal switchblade nonsense is one court case away from being blown out of the water. There is no rational reason to ban switchblades.

What it shows is that you can have a high murder rate with no guns at all. In other words, gun control means nothing, other than infringing on law abiding citizens rights.

What it means is that gun control means nothing because you can have high murder rates without guns. After effective gun and knife control, what comes next, sensible hammer control? How about car and truck control?

I have never argued for gun control. I would think it an absolute waste of time for america.

Guns have nothing to do with murder rates except that they are one of the many means by which murder can be accomplished. They are not a cause for criminality they are not a solution to crime.

The problem here is trying to convince the pro gun group that their gun is not the solution they think it is. Yet they will argue that the two main reasons for a gun is to protect themselves from criminals and to stage a revolution against their government.

It is not gun control that is needed it is people being held responsible for being stupid with guns.

What we need is for keeping dangerous people locked up. It's ridiculous to hear something bad happening and then find out this person has been in and out of jail numerous times or, as in the case of the Florida shooter, there were numerous warning signs which should have led to his detention before the shooting.

Wow...Lots of as they alternate facts...

so lets review....the report says...London exceed New York Murder rate....

0.3-Original-NY-London-figures.png

however New York updated it murder rate after March.... this is the result

0.4-Revised-NY-London-figures.png

now if you really look at the numbers in both New York and London the cities have average of 8.5 million population and the murder rate is about 20 something...
both cities also have the toughest guns laws...and I assume the remark was a jab at gun control.... but if you look this in a greatest context.... here is the New York murder rate compared to other cities with far less population

0.1-US-cities-by-murder-rate.jpg

so for example Olando, Huston, Miami with more "liberal Gun" laws have more murder rate...so is that for gun control or against gun control?

One thing that is certain...the poorer the city the more murder rate, so the murder rate is more aggregate of the poverty and economic status than anything else.

Let's not try to dishout too many alternative facts...it is only Tuesday.

Diving Mullah

I mean, what's next, cities setting up speed limits!

Christ almighty the lengths pro gun people with no actual argument will go to try and pretend they have a valid argument is completely ridiculous

And there in is your problem. Prisons are only recruiting centres for gangs. While i agree on the necessity of keeping dangerous criminals away from society. The need is to do more than just lock them up.
Eventually by your constitution, they must be freed.

And unfortunately for your idea you cannot lock someone up for thinking about committing a crime. Unless you are favouring some sort of thought police actions, a knock on the door in the middle of the night as the nazi's and russians did?

The numerous warning signs should of been a problem for social workers and psychologists not for prison wardens.

You'd think an American publication would have learned a little about trusting politician's Tweets.

London Mayor incorporates a role similar to police commissioner elsewhere so he plays some role in implementation on the ground, Khan has no powers to make or change laws. Some (but not all) knives are illegal to carry in the UK but there are practical exceptions (working tools etc.) and Khan has no power to alter those either. He's just playing politics for the domestic audience because he has to be seen to be doing something (though to be fair, there is little he can do in the immediate term).

I'm saying that we should keep dangerous people locked up. To have a revolving door on the prison where you can just come and go dozens of times is just plain stupid.

LOL

Yes? There is a huge issue with knife crimes in London, so to crack down on knife carrying people is not that illogical.

Nobody needs to go out carrying dangerous weapons on public streets IMHO.
