Senate Republican blasts Trump tariff decision: 'So much losing' - ABC News

Now, I fully realize that the tRump base likely consists of the largest group of ill-informed, gullible and uneducated political supporters that we have seen in quite some time, but trade wars do not work. They are neither good nor easy to win. Maybe (as sad as it may seem) it will take some of these supporters losing their jobs before they realize that some of tRumps ideas are just plain stupid.................:(

So what. Sasse is a coward just like almost all the other GOP Senators and his criticism of Trump will be narrowly limited to his states economic interests. He will support Trump on everything else.

Just posted the same thing. I sent an email to his office and will call later to thank him. The question is will the others stand up to Trump.

I don't think Sasse would support Trump on everything else. He has always been a very loud critic of him.

The Sasse complaint is valid. The concern we have with China is IP and tariffs nor the threat of them resolve IP issues. You need something like TPP to corral China, to surround it with trading partners committed to a system of fees and penalties for IP thieves and offenders. You will never solve IP issues with tariffs and you will never resolve them with bilateral agreements. Of course trump, in his constant insistence on throwing red meat to his base, slam dunked himself out of TPP which was exactly the platform needed to corral China's IP abuses. So now we are threatening these tariffs which would scare me to death if I was a producer of the products that China is deciding to counter with their own tariffs. Even companies that have products coming from China have much to fear in the increase to their cost of doing business. This is another example of trump's lack of understanding nor even care for the reality of a circumstance.

Kudlow is now caught in the same cesspool that every administration official gets caught in, literally speaking out of both sides of his mouth from one minute to the next:
- we are serious but we are not serious about these tariffs because we don't think they will happen
- the president is opposed to multilateral agreements but expects the WTO to bail us out of this mess
- the issue (as I have been saying) is IP, not the trade deficit
- whoops the issue is trade deficit which is BS

This from Kudlow all in the space of one 5 minute driveway press splash.

So what lever to you want the WTO to pull since the administration is imposing tariffs when the real problem we have with China is IP infringement. While you are at it Larry you should just admit that WTO is too large and too broadly based. You are going from bilateral which won't work to multilateral but too large to really play in this game because trump slam dunked himself out of TPP.

Now the impact of trump's blundering around like a bull in a China shop (pardon the pun) become clear.

This is why the WTO is the wrong place to try to resolve these IP issues...it is too large. China is now arranging to get the products that they need on their end, like agro products, from countries that can supply agro products, that are members of the WTO but that do not really have any IP issues to protect! So, our farmers just lose and lose again. They lose some business in the form of higher prices for their goods in China and then they lose the business entirely to a country that does not have IP issues to protect that can easily and gladly supply those products to China.

This is really all a result of trump having slam dunked himself out of TPP which was tailor made to resolve these IP issues that we and other members OF TPP have with China.

In fact, I have to agree with those commenting that trump has taken an issue for which we should have had broad support from any of the industrialized countries of the world and allowed China to swing support over to them FROM US!

Nicely done Donald. Hope thoughts of that base keep you warm at night. That is all you are going to have left at this rate. In fact, since the heartland is trump country, now you are going to start to carve out segments of that base. Nicely done donald.

Keep in mind that Senators are elected by their representative states. As such, they are supposed to work on behalf of those states. That said, most of the current crop of Republican cowards would sell out their own states in order to grovel at the feet of tRump.

States elect nobody and have no votes. Only citizens have votes and do the electing.
