Because liberalism has been hijacked by socialist and communist.

New wave progressivism, SJW, BLM and the far left are hard core communist movements even if many of those participating in it are not even completely aware of it.

Bernie Sanders, while I do think he has a few good though not entirely realistic ideas, has brought forth something radical on the left that has been silently existing right below the surface out of sight for years.

Look at the protest against Trump in California. I don't care what you think about Trump first off, it doesn't matter in this discussion.

The violent and ugly reaction Americans are getting just for supporting Trump is scary.

I wouldn't wish that treatment on any supporter of any candidate.

Do some digging on the net, Twitter and Reddit and the reaction to these assaults by leftists is equally disturbing.

This, this is at the heart of the protest.

This quote was like a punch in the gut. None out this faux outrage about damn near everything is truly about equality or social justice.

It is about tearing down the foundations of traditional Western civilization whether it be Christianity, free markets, freedom of speech and so on.

From a quote:

"The communist position, however, should be based on this question: who's free speech and for whom? There is no freedom and no speech that is outside of class struggle. To demand the freedom of the oppressed and global majority is to demand the removal of the freedom of the oppressor to oppress; to demand the free expression of the oppressed classes is to also demand the suppression of reactionary anti-person "free" expression.“

Oh lookie, another post about how liberals are really commies and socialists, and why Christianity is under attack.

A "classical liberal" is just a person who wants to make money off of people who think PC culture is the downfall of society.

Your screen name seems to indicate you're from Australia, or have strong ties to Australia. If either of those are the case, prithee, sirrah, how tyrannical is Australia these days since the government there is much more liberal (in the modern definition) than America's?

Perhaps you might be more comfortable with theocracy but I grew up in a democracy, a SECULAR democracy. Donald Trump is the weapon of mass destruction chosen by Dominionist evangelicals to destabilize secular democracy in this country, so as to make the nation ripe for authoritarian fascist theocracy.

Please don't take MY word for it, go to a Dominionist evangelical church and listen to to some sermons.
All they talk about is yearning for the day when biblical law becomes the law of the land. That spells THEOCRACY.

Trump Will Start the End of the World, Claim Evangelicals Who Support Him

And just where do you think they will flee to? The Republican party? Ha. Ha. They are not fleeing from the Democratic party because the alternative is totally unacceptable.

Progressives will take control OF the Democratic Party because the establishment are four time losers, 2000, 2010, 2014 and 2016.

Wrong, right out of the chute.
The problem is with conservatives and other right whingers who lump everyone on the left under the umbrella 'liberal'. Liberalism is the same today as it was in my father's day. He learned about liberalism from his father, and I did from him. Conservatives have gotten more vocally ignorant and they take everything they don't like about society, gather it into a pile and call the heap 'liberalism'. Trouble is, at some point somebody told them that the sainted Founding Fathers they revere were liberals, so they invented the term 'classical liberalism'. This new term allows them to make a case for conservatives being the natural heirs of the founders, if they ignore the progression of history since then 'till now.
I'm talking about Americans, of course. Everywhere else in the English-speaking world people know exactly what I mean when I say I'm liberal. It's only American conservatives who stumble all over the dictionary when confronted with the word.

See what I mean? Do you really not know how the terms 'left' and 'liberal' are not interchangeable? Liberalism hasn't been 'hijacked' by socialists and communists. Conservatives don't know what the difference is. Ignorance. Willful ignorance. That's what it is.

Here's a hint- if you're unsure, check the dictionary. That's the standard. I recommend Merriam-Webster's to my American friends. If your idea of what a word means differs from the dictionary, it's you that's wrong. The dictionary is right.

Leftist goal is to destroy everything for which they disagree. Especially the US. No room for compromise with the kooker left.

Good post.

Just as the classic conservative is turning away from the modern day neo-conservative and Hannity-bots.

I'm fine with leaving the fringe lunatics out on the perimeter. Left or right, in the grand scheme of things, the middle always comes through. Granted, it would be much easier to progress without all that noise coming from the left/right wingtards. But, at the end of the day, there aren't enough of them to be truly significant. One cancels out the other. Logic and the dictates of reason will prevail in America's never ending pursuit of liberty for all.

Wow that's a lot of big words.

This just in: Republicans didn't choose Donald Trump. Most of them didn't want him to even run in the primaries, much less as president.

The only reason that he got elected is because of the fact that he was the lesser of two evils on election day.

Johnny, tell him what he's won.

...No, it's a defined school of political philosophy dating back centuries. It's claimed by constitutional fanboys like myself, as well as individuals like OP. Not that I'm implying anything with that, moderators! I'm just saying, it's a diverse crowd.

And yet many continue to support him. There are plenty who don't, like NeverTrumpGOP, cpwill, and others on this forum aline, but his continued support isn't exactly coming from centrists and independents.

You gotta race the horse that you brought to the track. Don't believe for one minute that most of his conservative supporters wouldn't rather have an alternative.

Personally I think that it's a good thing to have a candidate actually get elected that neither party is comfortable with. At worst it throws a monkey-wrench in the D/R political gears for a few years.
