Britain says former Russian spy poisoned with nerve agent

Sergei Skripal, once a colonel in Russia’s GRU military intelligence service, and his 33-year-old daughter, Yulia, were found slumped unconscious on a bench outside a shopping center in the southern English city of Salisbury on Sunday afternoon.

Both remain critically ill and a police officer who attended the scene is also in a serious condition in hospital.

“This is being treated as a major incident involving attempted murder by administration of a nerve agent,” London Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley told reporters. “I can also confirm that we believe the two people originally who became unwell were targeted specifically.”

And here is what Putin said....

Vladimir Putin warns enemies will ‘swallow poison’, UK confirm nerve agent ‘used to kill’ Russian spy

President Vladimir Putin has warned that Moscow’s enemies will “swallow poison”, as British authorities reveal the substance used in the attempted assassination of a former Russian spy.

In an angry address aimed at the West’s sanctions over Moscow’s annexation of Crimea, Mr Putin on Thursday (AEDT) said efforts to contain Russia were “illegitimate and unfair”.

“Those who serve us with poison will eventually swallow it and poison themselves,” he said in an interview with Russian state television.

The grim threat came just hours before Scotland Yard confirmed former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were the victims of a nerve agent.

This is the man Trump praises, refuses to say anything negative about and refuses to impose sanctions on.

Perhaps these enemies of Putin ought not to hang out in the UK anymore since they're obviously not safe there.

He wasn't an enemy of Putin, per se. He was an ex-spy, released in a swap, who retired to a sleepy English town. He'd go to the corner shop to buy milk and sausage and the occasional lottery card. Apparently, he kept in regular touch with the Russian embassy too.
It had to be a state actor who suppied the nerve agent. Given his contacts with dossier man Steele, it might have been Trump!

The first responder cop who was in a coma is now communicating, tho' still critical.

In a story about a Russian double agent getting killed, you still find a way to interject TDS into it...

This has plenty to do with Trump's policy towards Russia and Putin. Here is Trump defending Putin...

Trump defends Putin: 'You think our country's so innocent?'

"But he's a killer," O'Reilly said to Trump.

"There are a lot of killers. You think our country's so innocent?" Trump replied.

Putin and his regime are horrible. Trump's attitude towards Putin makes no sense and deserves scrutiny. But keep burying your head in the sand pretending Trump's attitude towards Putin is not deeply suspicious.

I know everybody throws the word “spy” around for all sorts of things but personally I don’t like using the word for these situations. A spy is somebody who is secretly collecting information on behalf of their own country. One might consider them patriots. But somebody who is secretly collecting information on their own country is a traitor.

Maybe I’m just being overly semantic.

You are right, he would have been a traitor. A traitor to Russia of course

Vlad Putin.. An ex-communist, ex-KGB, who kills his political enemies and who has said he wished the USSR never fell.

Never in my life did I think Cons and Republicans would EVER defend and excuse such a POS and an enemy of the US. But they are. Simply because they hate Dems and Libs, who are fellow Americans more than they hate Putin. They are sitting back and letting Trump sell the US to Putin, and letting Putin become the leader other countries are going to have to deal with because Trump refuses to step on Putin's toes. All because of hatred.

F'ing amazing.

Sergei Skripal was among prisoners in Russia swapped in 2010 for Russians imprisoned in the US.

One of those swapped back to Russia was Anna Chapman. She was a Russian SVR agent. Anyone remember her?

This is a big, big deal.

If Russia is responsible for this something needs to be done. Has Putin lost his mind?

It may be that someone got REALLY careless/sloppy and effed up, or possibly Putin's just in DGAF mode, but this seems like he's playing with very dangerous fire.

Putin has not been held accountable yet. What action do you recommend? If they (Russians) are responsible.

Gotta say, a nerve agent is probably preferable to extrajudicial killings done by drone. Say what you will about Putin, he causes less collateral damage than Obama.

Not yet, no. I have no idea what can or should be done about this, to whichever party is responsible. It's essentially an attack on Britain, somewhat like an act of war.

Then there is that “guilt by association “ thing. How does the daughter and the Leo figure into your flip response?

How many more would've died if it had been a drone strike? My main point though is the selective outrage at assasinations. Putin's not doing anything that hasn't been done by the US.

I suspect this is weighing heavily, on Paul Manafort's mind ...
