Christopher Steele claims Kremlin told Trump not to nominate Romney secretary of state - Business Insider
Former British spy Christopher Steele, the author of the influential dossier detailing President Donald Trump's connections to Russia, reportedly wrote a memo in 2016 that contained a bombshell claim that wasn't included in his original dossier — that Russia had told Trump not to nominate former Utah Gov. Mitt Romney for secretary of state because of his perceived hawkishness toward Russia.

... Instead of nominating Romney, Trump eventually named Rex Tillerson to head the State Department. Tillerson had previously been awarded the Russian Order of Friendship during his time as the CEO of Exxon Mobil, and he was seen as having a close relationship with Russia.

somehow, i believe the American public would become outraged - even many of the tRump loyalists - to learn that tRump had given putin veto power over his cabinet selection

I'm pretty sure anything Christopher Steele has to say about whatever Putin says has about as much credibility as Steele's disgraced and disgraceful dossier bought and paid for by the DNC and the Hillary campaign. Now you might want to check out whatever Putin told THEM. . . . .?

This is the same guy who used a piss-fetish Trump fanfic from 4Chan in a big reveal about him, correct? I don't think he's a very reliable source of information on this.

What a quaint assertion. The dossier hasn't been 'disgraced' and isn't 'disgraceful'.

You don't sound like you're very informed on the matter.

NO, this is the ex-intelligence officer that is highly respected, and has given much crucial information that has been verified over the years. He worked as an intelligence officer in the British secret intelligence service from 1987 to 2009.

Okay, so different guy. Thanks.

What?

Two things:

1. Why is Christopher Steele an unreliable person?

2. What about the dossier? Disgraced?

Nope.

The portion of the American public that has already committed to defending Trump at all costs will say words to excuse not paying attention (note: I'm not claiming to believe it's true in saying that)

Yup.

What I said plus a "LOOK AT HILLARY!"

It's the same with everything. Take the massive recklessness of the Trump admin with regard to security clearances. 20+ people on temp. security status for over a year - unheard of - but that's cool. Also, but Hillary's email server.

The whole thing is absurd.

"reportedly"

This is what "journalism has become...

Sounds legit...

We'd never have found out about the Watergate cover-up but for anonymous sources. That doesn't mean believe them all automatically, but it does mean that it is foolish and reckless in the extreme to embrace the notion that suddenly, no anonymous source is to be trusted.

That only started happening because bad things were said about Trump and therefore Trump attacked anonymous sources.

Why are you spelling his name out like that? With a lower case T?

Christopher Steele has yet to produce anything substantiated, why do think he suddenly has now ??

Multiple people indicted, multiple people pled guilty, and the investigation is still going.

What?

Two things:

1. Why is Christopher Steele an unreliable person?

2. What about the dossier? Disgraced?

1. Because he reported things negative about Trump. But people saying bad things about "Killary" are to be trusted.

2. Yes, even though so many people around Trump are going down hard (in more ways than one). And the only reason "Killary" isn't in jail is that the entire law enforcement apparatus, including Sessions - who could convene a grand jury tomorrow to try to indict her - is in on a vast conspiracy to help her and hurt Trump, even though she's done and no one likes her.

So...does it mean anything that almost all verified cases of BS news say words to the effect of "reportedly" "according to sources familiar with the conversation" ...etc.?

While such "sources" are not to be outright discounted, neither should confirmation bias turn off the BS meter. A healthy dose of skepticism is needed no matter who the story is about.

I give the OP credit, If True was in the title.

Steeles track record with the truth seems more reliable than Trumps version of what he calls the truth. This is the end result when you vote for a man with no integrity. But please, you carry on lowering the bar.

What I am saying is that a "healthy dose of skepticism" is a good thing to have, but saying anything along the lines of "anonymous source, fake news" or "it was reported, fake news" is not healthy skepticism. It's a way to avoid hearing things.

I don't automatically believe what I read. I judge it in context of what it is, who said it, the political environment, like things done by various persons biased in various ways (as far as I can surmise), yadda yadda. But I have had more than enough of seeing people announce that because it's an anonymous source, or worded vaguely ("has been reported"), whatever is said must be rejected with mockery.

Which has nothing to do with the dossier. Lawdy

I highly doubt Trump had any plans for Romney to be Secretary of State. Not when Romney dissed Trump big time joining G.H.W and Jeb Bush as anti-Trumpers. The fact Trump succeeded getting Romney to an interview at Trump Towers made it look like Romney was begging on his knees for forgiveness. There's no way Trump was considering Romney, not with their feud going on hot and heavy.

On the other hand, you also have to understand the limitations of the dossier. Steele was dealing with raw data.. the dossier can provide pointers, but has to be independently verified.

The dossier, which was a small part of the evidence considered by the FISA court that issued then later renewed warrants for surveillance on Carter Page, which was part of the grander investigation into Russian interference, potential collusion, and anything else Meuller might turn up?

"Lawdy" indeed.

:doh

I agree with most of that, however the media is now laying in the bed they made. Increased skepticism is a natural reaction as the media has shown an increasing tendacy over time to embellish or outright fabricate a story.

Just like if you catch me lying to you once, that's one thing, but if I repeatedly do it you would only naturally be correct to be untrusting of even the most mundane things I would say.
