Should we continue to import cheep steal and aluminum driving our own domestic companies out of business and placing ourselves in a vulnerable position in the event of war?

Does that sound like smart policy to you?
Speaking of grade school arguments, you love to resort to hype talk and zero evidence. Good stuff there my dude.

What monopoly does China have that is destroying our domestic industry? Did American steel production suddenly fall? Nope.

Did American steel companies start some precipitous decline into nothing? Nope.

The only thing these tariffs will accomplish is ****ing over the consumer and industries that rely on steel.

    No YOU'RE lying.

70% of all steel purchased in the United States is already domestic. We're the 4th largest steel producer in the world and yet we hardly export steel, I wonder why...

Foreign trade has nothing to do with the loss of steel jobs. It's automation, don't kid yourself.

We lost thousands of steel jobs in the past decade and yet American steel production hasn't dropped significantly in the past 3 decades. Try thinking about that one.

I have an idea! How about you actually read the US Commerce Department study which concluded that the United States National Security was threatened by the status quo in the Steel and Aluminum Industries and you may learn enough to actually form an intelligent opinion instead of pulling stupid opinions out of your backside. Only stupid people form opinions about things they really do not understand. Then come back and give us a detailed status report of how our current production stacks up in all categories of steel against what we would theoretically need to support the wartime production of weapons, ships, infrastructure, and every other need such a contingency would require.... We will wait for your detailed report.

"blah blah blah I have zero evidence to back it up and I made a claim that I want you to now disprove"

Not the way it works. Feel free to even post what it is you feel the department of commerce has written.

Also, the head of the department of commerce is an anti-trade Trumpet, so I wouldn't be surprised if they went ahead and decided to publish something like that. I know it's incredibly hard for you to post a shred of evidence, but you can try my guy.

"But the industry is under threat from steelmakers in competing countries, especially China, which has emerged as by far the largest and most powerful producer on earth.

China now produces about half of the world's steel. It singlehandedly churns out as much steel in one year as the entire world did in 2000. ( 10 times what the US produces)

During the same time, the U.S. share of global production has fallen from 12 percent to 5 percent today, says Eswar Prasad, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and professor of trade policy at Cornell University." ( NPR March 8, 2018)

So we should do nothing and lose our ability to compete.... Perhaps the snowflakes will be happy when the US is relegated to third world industrial status and cannot produce enough steel or aluminum to even defend itself in event of war.....

None of that evidence refutes the claim in the post you're quoting.

This must be one of those grade school arguments you were talking about.

Look who is wearing the tin foil hat.... The US government (both the Commerce Department and the Department of Defense) is now conspiring to create a world wide trade war because they are crazy..

So seeing as you seem to think you are the foremost authority on this subject and know more than the Commerce Department and the Department of Defense, what level should we allow the US steel making ability sink to before it is a National Security Threat? 2% .02%?
