U.S. Considers Broad Curbs on Chinese Imports, Takeovers

For those of you who are ignorant in the art of negotiating, all negotiations start from a more extreme position and gravitate to a more moderate one. My god it is like I am talking to a bunch of grade school children.....

Memo to the myopic: it also will increase the price of imported Asian automobiles and trucks. They buy mosty Chinese steel. So there is that. As far as Canada goes, we are going to have to wait and see. They are a large exporter, and a threat to our domestic steel industry. Maybe it’s time to bring some of those jobs home.

Sure, right after we start punish the Russians, we can assume that will cranking up any minute now, right........in the mean time let's get into Trade Wars with our major trading partners..........Putin is Laughing his arse off.

There will be no trade war... Trump will get the concessions he is after and the people who opposed what he is doing will look like idiots..... again.

Oh there is an Idiot involved, you are supporting him, so...................

Well there is already a growing list of our trading partners that have stated that they will impose tariffs on US products if ours get implement, so I guess they are also negotiating. Thing is this tactic might work in the business world where you have the upper hand, this is not the business world and we do not have that strong a hand, not to mention the fact we depend on many imports that we cannot even produce ourselves and the jump in prices and layoffs from US companies. Oh and the Republicans are against this, and in the end they may have to act if things go too far and it looks like the US economy is about to implode. I would imagine that gross incompetence is all the grounds they may need.

They will do nothing. They are bluffing because they have much, much more to lose than we do. You could not be more wrong about how strong our hand is. And of course this is the BUISNESS WORLD! ARE YOU KIDING? You do not even realize this is business. And yes all the POLITICIANS are against this because they are all whores who have sold their asses to the CORPORATE GLOBALISTS.

How did the American people become so ignorant?

So their tariffs are fine, but ours are foolish..... Yes that make perfect sense....

China has a comparative advantage in labor, their cheap prices is hardly a result of some massive ass tariffs.

Ahhh yes, and here's the part where I ask you to cite what major tariffs China has on foreign steel. They're already the largest producer, and seeing as how they export so much steel they clearly have an excess that their domestic population cannot or does not want to consume. What exactly would China need to protect its steel companies against?

https://www.trade.gov/steel/countries/pdfs/2017/q2/imports-china.pdf

Yeah, China imports next to nothing in regards to steel, and exports much much more than they import. They have zero need for tariffs on steel.

"Antidumping duties (AD), countervailing duties (CVD), associated suspension agreements, and safeguards are often referred to collectively as trade remedies. These are internationally agreed upon mechanisms to address the market-distorting effects of unfair trade, or serious injury or threat of serious injury caused by a surge in imports. Unlike anti-dumping and countervailing measures, safeguards do not require a finding of an “unfair” practice. Before applying these duties or measures, countries investigate allegations and can remedy or provide relief for the injury caused to a domestic industry. The table below provides statistics on the current number of trade remedies China has against imports of steel mill products from various countries. China has no steel mill safeguards in effect."

In other words, China has no tariffs that are justified without the discovery of some "unfair practice." Makes sense seeing as they are the top steel exporter and not even the tenth highest steel importer.

What none of the critics of this policy seem to understand is that Trump has NO choice in this matter. The US Commerce Department has done 2 reports in which they concluded that unfair trade practices are putting US Steel and Aluminum companies at risk of bankruptcy and that is a NATIONAL SECURITY CONCERN. We must maintain a certain level of DOMESTIC production to ensure our ability to fight a war if international supplies are cut off.

What part of that do the idiots not understand?

"to be able to fight a war"

what a joke it would take hardly 3% of the steel we currently consume to fully mobilize the American armed forces and righ now over 70% of the steel we consume is domestically made anyways.

Steel production in America has remained constant for decades, and Nucor, the largest steel producer in America has seen its stocks rise by over a factor of 4 since 2000.

More grade school arguments.... Are you guys really this ignorant of how this works? Do you understand the practice of "dumping" in order to obtain monopolies in industry sectors? China dumps huge amounts of steel and aluminum on world markets at below production costs in order to monopolize the market in a predatory manor. Should we continue to import cheep steal and aluminum driving our own domestic companies out of business and placing ourselves in a vulnerable position in the event of war?

Does that sound like smart policy to you?

Your lying. When measured by total volume, the nation’s largest states dominate steel and aluminum imports. Texas, California, Illinois, Michigan, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York all import more than $2 billion annually in steel and aluminum products, together accounting for 60 percent of the nation’s total.

It’s also about US jobs coming back. What does the left wing have against the steel workers? Are the Canadian steel plants union plants and they don’t want to cannibalize their US members.

Speaking of grade school arguments, you love to resort to hype talk and zero evidence. Good stuff there my dude.

What monopoly does China have that is destroying our domestic industry? Did American steel production suddenly fall? Nope.

Did American steel companies start some precipitous decline into nothing? Nope.

The only thing these tariffs will accomplish is ****ing over the consumer and industries that rely on steel.

We shall see, of-course when it is too late...............:popcorn2:

No YOU'RE lying.

70% of all steel purchased in the United States is already domestic. We're the 4th largest steel producer in the world and yet we hardly export steel, I wonder why...

Foreign trade has nothing to do with the loss of steel jobs. It's automation, don't kid yourself.

We lost thousands of steel jobs in the past decade and yet American steel production hasn't dropped significantly in the past 3 decades. Try thinking about that one.

I have an idea! How about you actually read the US Commerce Department study which concluded that the United States National Security was threatened by the status quo in the Steel and Aluminum Industries and you may learn enough to actually form an intelligent opinion instead of pulling stupid opinions out of your backside. Only stupid people form opinions about things they really do not understand. Then come back and give us a detailed status report of how our current production stacks up in all categories of steel against what we would theoretically need to support the wartime production of weapons, ships, infrastructure, and every other need such a contingency would require.... We will wait for your detailed report.

"blah blah blah I have zero evidence to back it up and I made a claim that I want you to now disprove"

Not the way it works. Feel free to even post what it is you feel the department of commerce has written.

Also, the head of the department of commerce is an anti-trade Trumpet, so I wouldn't be surprised if they went ahead and decided to publish something like that. I know it's incredibly hard for you to post a shred of evidence, but you can try my guy.

"But the industry is under threat from steelmakers in competing countries, especially China, which has emerged as by far the largest and most powerful producer on earth.

China now produces about half of the world's steel. It singlehandedly churns out as much steel in one year as the entire world did in 2000. ( 10 times what the US produces)

During the same time, the U.S. share of global production has fallen from 12 percent to 5 percent today, says Eswar Prasad, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and professor of trade policy at Cornell University." ( NPR March 8, 2018·)

So we should do nothing and lose our ability to compete.... Perhaps the snowflakes will be happy when the US is relegated to third world industrial status and cannot produce enough steel or aluminum to even defend itself in event of war.....

None of that evidence refutes the claim in the post you're quoting.

This must be one of those grade school arguments you were talking about.

Look who is wearing the tin foil hat.... The US government (both the Commerce Department and the Department of Defense) is now conspiring to create a world wide trade war because they are crazy..

So seeing as you seem to think you are the foremost authority on this subject and know more than the Commerce Department and the Department of Defense, what level should we allow the US steel making ability sink to before it is a National Security Threat? 2% .02%?
