President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that he had reduced the cost of the American embassy in Jerusalem from $1 billion to a mere $250,000.

I can see reducing the cost down from $1B...but down to $250K? That's fantasyland...especially since it ignores all the myriad security measures that need to be built into the walls, and the specific materials that need to be used e.g. even the windows have to be of a particular material (since conversations on the other side of a glass window can be eavesdropped simply by detecting the vibrations on the window). There's the measures to eliminate (if possible) electronic bugging or other forms of surveillance, and security upgrades to harden against physical attack.

But this is Trump, the same guy who apparently thought that health insurance only costs $12/year.

$250,000 is for the upgrade to convert the consulate in Jerusalem to an embassy.

we all KNOW that Trump is a genius so, he is like the super man of mathematics .......... a super genius ............

Are you kidding me? That's not even going to cover the cost for the required security staff during a remodel.

We should just put a big bullseye on the roof and an arrow and phrase that says, "rockets here."

To a temporary embassy that will be used while the permanent embassy is being built. The permanent one will be much closer to $1B, I'm sure.

I so hope that Trump will attend the ribbon cutting in Jerusalem, the security for that alone will run 250k.

Man. Imagine the protests?

Upgrading from a consulate to a full embassy - with all the required security upgrades and hardening - for only $250K?

If you believe that, I've got a bridge across Jones Bayou down in the Delta to sell you - cheap! Come to think of it, just that little 30-ft-long bridge almost certainly would cost a bit more than $250K to replace since it collapsed a few years back....

Yep, and moving everyone twice is a sure way to save money.

The link doesn't work for me. Where's the report?

Nevermind. I found one, ABC News...

I wondr what kind of game he's playing? Is he hoping nobody reads beyond, "Trump says..."?

What really makes you shake your head is, this is one area you'd expect him to be knowledgable in.

Especially since if a Democrat is elected in 2020, the embassy's going to be moved back to Tel Aviv in short order.

Our government may be big, and it may be slow, but it sure is expensive.

Man. Imagine the protests?

From who? The Israelis probably love him. They don’t care about Trumps domestic agenda as long as he keeps the money and weapons flowing their way.

The Palestinians? Who would know the difference between them protesting versus just living in the region, they’re a problem every day of the week, peace is impossible because their problem is the existence jews in the Middle East

Not unless federal law is changed, see in case you didn’t know, current US Federal law mandates the embassy in Jerusalem, so once it’s moved there’s zero legal authority for the president to move it back, plus it would be such a naked act of pro-Islamic anti Semitism to do so that it would be politically toxic. When the law allowed the president to indefinitely delay the embassy move it was easy to claim that they were working towards a peace that will never happen, but now that it’s moved it requires affirmatively taking the side of Muslims over the Jewish people and that will be a tough sell politically.

Palestinians, obviously. Lots live in Israel- about 20% of Israeli citizens identify as Arabic. Almost all are Muslims, with a handful of Christians and Druze.

Yeah, and they’re always protesting or rioting. The Christian and Druze won’t be protesting, they’re integrated in Israeli society and the Druze serve in the IDF.
