Ellen DeGeneres tried to make Bill Gates look foolish but only succeeded in showing her own ignorance about value for money and the poor in Africa.
She invited Bill Gates onto her show, and for some reason Bill accepted. He surely knew she would try and put him down because a) he is a man, and b) he is the richest man on earth.
Her weapon of choice was a grocery list, which she proudly asked him about. Obviously Bill didn’t know the price of various grocery items, and Ellen’s audience ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ accordingly. Then the media got in on the act, trying to make Bill look even stupider.

Now let’s look at the truth and see how stupid Ellen made herself look.
As the article states, Gates is one of the richest men who has ever lived, currently worth $US91.7 billion. Consider what Ellen and her drongo audiences apparently want him to do:
Spend a day memorizing lists of grocery item prices.
He earned $11.5 billion this year which works out to be ~$33.3 million per day; $1.38 million per hour; or ~$23,148 per minute.

Taking a day off to learn the grocery prices, even though Bill would never use that knowledge for anything, would cost $33.3 million. Ellen thinks it would be worth losing that $33.3 million, even though it would accomplish nothing, since all Gates’ groceries are bought by staff. He has other people managing those affairs, who see that it is being done honestly.
In the meantime there are millions of starving Africans that Bill has helped with huge donations in numerous ways over the years. Why take $33.3 million out of Gates’ pocket for such a frivolous exercise, when he may have earned that same money and donated it to Africans, who don’t know anything about the price of supermarket items either? Is Ellen not only taking their $33 million dollars away from them, but laughing and sneering at them for their lack of knowledge too?
