Being a shooting victim doesn’t make you an expert on ending gun violence. But you wouldn’t know that from watching CNN.

It’s been a week since a monster killed 17 people at a Florida high school. The calls for gun control have been reflexive and ambiguous, but the media have found a new mouthpiece — shooting survivors.

“Students seize control of gun debate” blared a MSNBC caption. An organization portraying itself as being made up of students announced a March 24 rally in D.C. and other cities called “March For Our Lives.” Some students say they won’t return to class until gun-control “legislation has been passed.” Videos of shooting survivors calling for gun control have gone viral.

Interviewing shooting survivors makes for compelling television, but it’s a horrible way to conduct a reasoned debate. Experiencing a tragic event doesn’t transform you into an expert, in the same way having a brain injury doesn’t make you a brain surgeon.

Funny, the media never says being a victim of illegal alien crime bestows any special status.

No, but neither does being a poster on DP or being an opinion writer. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, except the dead.

Those kids really got you and your kind shaken. If anything else that's a good thing

In the same way getting hit in the head by a rocket doesn't make you a rocket scientist.

But it can give you a brain injury.

Some of the victims speaking out against gun control sound like they have brain injuries.

If they'd taken a few months to cool down they might sound more intelligent.

Actually, those kids are getting a crash course in politics--nothing they do will change anything.

After their crash course in survival, that's two harsh lessons in a row.

I suggest blankets and binkies for all.

Yeahbut in those few months there'll be another batch of survivors. And they'll be just a bit louder than these ones.

Victimhood is like sainthood to certain segments of society and the media....

You might be about to have the meaning of an old cliche brought home to you- "Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

Oh, I perfectly understand that some people are not learning from history that we have to implement adequate security in all our schools.

May they learn soon and stop their stubborn denial.

No, but you guys do, so what does that say about you? So being a victim of an illegal alien doesn't bestow you any status either.

Being a shooting victim doesn’t make you an expert on ending gun violence.

Perhaps not but it does empower you to force changes to existing gun laws, or to cause new ones to be created, and you are hereby put on notice that you will not be able to stop what's coming.

End of discussion.

This is unfortunately true.

This country is just full of cowardly males that can't fathom not having a gun with them. Some so obsessed they have pics of guns to represent them.

It's their version of a blanket and binky.

Not quite, because that was said after the Newtown, CT school mass shooting and resulted in soaring gun and ammo sales nationwide. Thanks, Obama.

No new law could have stopped it.......but THIS could stop it.

Home Schooled children were safe on that day in that city!!!!!!!!!

Having Parkinson's disease doesn't necessarily mean Michael J. Fox knows how to cure it either, but as a beloved actor suffering from the disease, his willingness to put himself out there in front of the world and be seen in order to advocate for action to help fight it sure has done a lot of good.

Rosa Parks might not have known how to end racism, but she knew it was wrong, and she was a hero for taking a stand against it.

Tell me... What exactly made Charleston Heston an expert on gun violence?

Better yet... What exactly does Trump, a billionaire reality show host know about helping middle-class white people?

At least these kids know what it feels like to be on the ****ty end of the problem. They may not know the exact solution, but they are extraordinarily qualified to know that we have a problem, and to demand a solution.

Yeahbut in those few months there'll be another batch of survivors. And they'll be just a bit louder than these ones.

And, how many of those survivors do you think will wish they'd been armed and been able to stop the killer before he slaughtered their friends?

Probably a lot but so what?

The "cowardly" males are the ones who obtain guns illegally and then use them to shoot other gang members and innocent bystanders, or to kill the residents of the homes they burglarize.

The smart males and females, are the ones who arm themselves because they refuse to be lambs to the slaughter.

Detroit has huge gang problems, but a few years ago the Chief of Police publicly advised residents to starting taking a measure of responsibility for themselves. He advised them to arm themselves. Burglaries have dropped dramatically as a result.

There's a reason Quaker sects were often wiped out -- they were not prepared to defend themselves.

Probably a lot but so what?

The point is that there will always be people out there who are ready and willing to harm you. You can take the position of trying to legislate them into being kind and compassionate (which never works), or you can minimize your chances of being a victim by being prepared to defend yourself.

Stay scared, makes no difference to me.
