Never understood any of it really, George Washington is always top of the list but, really, what did he have to face?
Setting the tone for the government's future, really. That's a momentous task. Consider it. Even at the basic level, the creation and division found in political parties was just brewing under his own cabinet. There were so many forms and norms being tried out under his administration, some embraced, others resisted by some and discarded later. Helping establish what the government will look like is very similar to the significance of the challenge of keeping it together.
That's a great deal why people, including the academic class, so highly value both Lincoln as well as Washington.
