I agree. And I think calling for the Director to resign is an overreaction anyway (not that it's not sadly typical these days; I'm just tired of the first response being "Off with his head!").
The family with whom Cruz was living, who now call him a "monster," say there were no warning signs. Cruz passed the background check to purchase a weapon. Should he have been on a "Don't sell to" list? I wish I understood why the FBI mistake was made.
But this I know: I don't want to live in a Minority Report world in which "proactivity" can be abusive.
I think, though, that we have unfortunately amassed enough evidence from past school shootings to begin to develop of profile of these shooters, whereby we might be served from enacting a critical pathway decision tree which decides which individuals to involuntarily commit for a brief period of time, long enough to initiate psych evaluations and intervention.
In a nutshell, this should have happened with the Baker Act, but if authorities were trained better and held responsible for turning a blind eye for whatever reason, Cruz would have been ineligible to buy a gun.
Affecting serious change will take far more than the immediate gratification of burning the wicker FBI Director on a stake.
