Faith Is No Longer a Virtue in America

Last week Joy Behar, co-host of the ABC show “The View,” did something that has become an escalating trend in our popular culture over the past 10 years — she mocked religiosity.

In a segment about Vice President Mike Pence and his belief that he hears the voice of God, Behar quipped: “It’s one thing to talk to Jesus. It’s another thing when Jesus talks to you. That’s called mental illness, if I’m not correct . . . hearing voices.”

The audience of “The View” clapped and laughed along with her.

But outside the entertainment bubble, in places like Cumberland, people were horrified.
Behar’s sneer and the applause it received from the studio audience is a nice in-kind contribution to the Trump 2020 campaign.

For bonus points, who said this?

The pundits, the pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue States: red states for Republicans, blue States for Democrats. But I’ve got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the blue states, and we don’t like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states. We coach little league in the blue states and, yes, we’ve got some gay friends in the red states.
    Anyone remember? Usual suspects maybe?

If I don't answer your post it's because you lost the debate.

Why should religious faith be a virtue anyway? A choice to believe or disbelief in a deity is almost entirely irrelevant to someone's moral character.
The GOP loves standards. They love standards so much, they got two of them.

Its the in thing to do for them, because Christianity is an easy target at the current time.

Good luck if you are waiting for them to stick it to any other religion however, or for them to say the same thing about Oprah and how she is waiting for god to give her the go ahead to run.

It’s worth noting that her comment was in reference to a similar one from a self-professed Christian; ?The View? star Joy Behar mocks Mike Pence?s Christian faith: ?That?s called mental illness? | Fox News
It all started when they played a clip from “Celebrity Big Brother,” in which former White House staffer Omarosa Manigault Newman discussed the vice president.

“As bad as you think Trump is, you would be worried about Pence… everyone that is wishing for impeachment might want to reconsider their life,” she said in the clip. “I am Christian, I love Jesus, but he thinks Jesus tells him to say things.”
That suggests to me that this is less about outsiders attacking faith or Christianity and more about arguments between different believers over the correct way to believe (which is far from a new thing).

Uh oh, someone has an opinion! America is falling apart, Joy Behar has an opinion that is not sanctioned by Trump!

Religion is an idea like any other, it's not sacred, nor should it be protected from criticism or mockery.

Well, she may have a point here.

Unless he means metaphorically, if he think God speaks to him, he is freakin' nuts. Or he's trying to con someone.

It shouldn't be considered a virtue, but why is it that the Hollyweirdo types feel the necessity to belittle Christian ideas while bolstering those of Muslim believers?

As an atheist, I don't buy into any belief system, but if I observe the world around me honestly, I have to admit that today's Christians (in general) are much less patriarchal and violent than today's Muslims (in general).

I wonder if Behar will expand on her sentiments by including those who believe Allah talks to them as also living on the crazy farm. How much do you want to bet that she doesn't?

If you hold a faith, you don't care what others think of it. Christians used to be lion food. I think we can manage this. As long as we are not prevented from living our faith and practicing our religion in our own spaces without interference, I don't think our faith should be at risk to some snide comments and a bad rep.

That said, I do tend to agree with you for once, it seems that hating on Christianity has become one of the last acceptable bigotries for the Left. But if we're honest, and give it a bit of thought, it's quite easy to see that a good chunk of that is our own fault. Sad thing is that if we had actually done what the Bible said, we wouldn't have pissed off anyone. Ah well, it never said we'd be able to be perfect...despite what some Christians would have folks believe.

True Nate...if Christians cared what others thought about them, they would have ceased to exist a long time ago...Jesus said we would be hated because of him...that has not changed nor will it...
