The first meeting between Mr Trump and Mr Duterte, which took place at the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) summit, was closely watched as both are known for striking a controversially outspoken and direct tone.

Mr Trump has previously praised Mr Duterte's war on drugs, reportedly telling him: "I just wanted to congratulate you because I am hearing of the unbelievable job on the drug problem. Many countries have the problem, we have a problem, but what a great job you are doing."

Ok. Sorry about that. More seriously, I think it is rather telling that Trump seems to respect dirty bastards because he views their deeds as indicating strength, rather than indicating a corrupt heart and mind.

Interestingly, Duterte's people have since claimed that he was just joking. And then there was that time Duterte bragged about killing someone, then said it was a "jest". Now who does that remind you of?
