If you left the GOP, when & why?

i was having a brief reminiscence of my libertarian days. i am not a Rand Paul supporter, though i do think that his neighbor is a violent asshole.

as for trickle down, it tends to yield the same result again and again : bubbles and crashes.

There's good in all political persuasions. That's our great challenge, to mesh all the good.
I see USSC Justices Kennedy and Roberts more as libertarians than Republicans.
We'll see in April whether their State's Right lean legalizes sports gambling.

The upcoming USSC showdown between trump and Mueller will be epic.

(btw, tres and I have formed a 3rd party tonight--the Tres Nimbies--mod DEM from midwest and mod GOP from northeast)

the issue that i really want to see addressed is political gerrymandering. i'm hoping that the SCOTUS will make gerrymandering more difficult.

I would like to see it so neither party can do it.

same here. i want to see gerrymandering banned federally. the best path to that is the SCOTUS, IMO.

First, the NDRC led by Holder and Obama is the best hope DEMs have for the 2021 remaps, all 142 of them.
It's certainly modeled after REDMAP 2010 by Chris Jankowski--Maddow had him a few years ago--brilliant politics.

Justice Thomas voted with the 4 liberals, 5-3, against the 'racial gerrymandering' in North Carolina, with the open seat unfilled during arguments. They'll be very busy on this matter going forth, with great influence by trump's record number of circuit judges.

This gerrymandering business has been in federal court for decades, especially this decade.
POTUS vote by congressional district changes every time they get a new map.:mrgreen: dailykos.elections has this data;

It was predicted a few years ago we would see the day when maps are in court ON election day.
I believe we're now there in Pennsylvania, with the GOP recall effort on those PA supreme court judges.
These candidates in PA don't even know where they'll be running.

We need a Constitutional Convention, brother. Retired Sen. Coburn is still trying.
You're 20+ years younger than I am. Best wishes with this mess left by my boomers and elders ...

There are dozens of reasons not to like Democrats. Problem is. There are now hundreds of reasons to dislike the Grand Old Party.

Exactly. I could never abide by Trumpism. I'm not alone in deserting the two major parties. Gallup puts party affiliation/identification as of December 2017 at 27% Democratic, 25% Republican with 46% independent. In 2012 those numbers were 35% Democratic, 30% Republican and 32% independent. That's quite a leap of desertions into the independent ranks. It has to do with both parties continues to move further and further left and right leaving most Americans with no political home. Only the die hard partisans are left in each party. Most Americans are purely disgusted with both parties. Problem is that in our two party system, there is no where else to turn. Our two major parties own a monopoly on our political system and they will do whatever it takes to ensure it remains that way.

Expect more Clinton vs. Trump candidates and elections in the future as our two major parties continue to shrink and leave more Americans by the way side.

i support redrawing all districts using population density data generated by the census. as for a constitutional convention, i'm hesitant to support that without seeing the specifics.

The best algorithm I can think of is to have the least Perimeter around the Area enclosed, with 710,000 people in each.
The closer you can get to a rectangle the better; it really is a mathematical thing.
The only CD that Doug Jones won out of 7 in Alabama could best be described as a Black Octopus.

When the naysayers bring up DEM maps, I'll gladly prove that GOPs have a 3-to-1 edge on these seats,
and that's just the federal maps ...

I think George H. W. Bush was the greatest one term president outside of James K. Polk. I voted for him twice and voted Republican more than Democrat up until Newt.

The abandonment of reason and authority in favor of emotion and willful ignorance is what chased me away from the Republican Party. They are nothing but the raging Id of America, now. The center resides in the Democratic Party. But even there, it is disappearing as evidenced by the embrace of Bernie Sanders and the demonization of international trade. Even Clinton her Ownself was trashing the TPP before it was over with.

Obama was the last centrist on the national stage. He was a better Republican than Reagan.

Enter the Tea Party, exit me.

The Tea Party has vanished now.

They disappeared once they got another Republican president. They only cared about deficits and spending when the EVIL Kenyan Muslim Democrat was in office. Now that they have their white Republican savior as president...they are happy as can be.

Yep. After "Freedom Fries," they went all in on being assholes.

I should have seen it coming in the 90's. They were already assholes back then even. I just wasn't paying attention.

One could argue that the very deep political divide we have now all started with the Republican's in 1990's and their hatred of Clinton.

I'd like to see districts drawn using census population density data only.

If GHW Bush had been reelected, had Romney been elected, had someone like Jon Huntsman been elected, the Republican Party would be quite different from what it is today. The Iraq war probably never would have happened, Trump would never have happened, and the Tea Party would have faded into obscurity, we might even have a functioning Congress, but...

Of all words uttered by tongue or pen,
The saddest of all are "It might have been."

They renamed themselves the "Freedom Caucus" and refocused their anger towards brown people.
