Under our current census system, we do not have to talk about our immigration status, or whether we are citizens. Since congressional representation is based on census results, this has the effect of giving more representation to areas that have heavy illegal immigrant populations. Trump wants to change that:

Washington Times said:
“Such a question would likely depress participation in the 2020 census from immigrants who fear the government could use the information to target them,” wrote Sen. Dianne Feinstein, ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, in a letter signed by her and four of her Democratic colleagues.“This chilling effect could lead to broad inaccuracies across the board, from how congressional districts are drawn to how government funds are distributed,” the senators said.

When Feinstein says "inaccuracies," what she really means is that Democrats are going to lose congressional seats from California, New York, and Illinois, and see them instead get moved to red states.

I'm ecstatic about this. Even if you don't believe that illegal immigrants vote, this is where they have a pretty large effect on our government, and they indirectly steal representation away from Americans. Let's hope that this move comes to fruition!

Yep. Great news. Of course Feinstein is worried about it. California's vote tallies and census numbers will be decimated.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Isn't that what a census is supposed to do, determine the who's, what's, why's, and wherefores of those residing in the United States every decade or so?

Feinstein hit it right on the head - this whole idea is to depress results from people Trump does not want counted in the first place.

Just another example how the right wing wants to use tricks to deny the reality of demographics and how they will change the nation making it more and more difficult for the white peoples party to win a fair and open election.

And illegal immigrants ought not be counted since they shouldn't be here anyway.

I agree that the census should ask whether or not someone is a citizen. States shouldn't get extra representation because they are encouraging people to **** on our sovereignty.

It would be nice to nail down how many people are here illegally as all we have are guesses and the FAILED INTELLIGENTSIA! have both competence and honesty issues so those guesses are not worth a lot, but this is not the way to do it.

This is just asking a question. Yes, you could have massive fraud, but I see no reason why we shouldn't even ask.

Fienstien is a ant-American piece of **** who licks the testicles of illegals and wants to use their numbers to get extra representation. Illegals shouldn't be counted because they shouldn't be here in the first place and legal immigrants shouldn't be counted seeing how they aren't allowed to vote.

Because getting the census right is hard enough and we really are not very good at doing things anymore, making the success less likely by asking a question that will not get answered honestly thus encouraging lying and making people fearful of the census takers is a bone headed move....there is zero chance of a positive outcome.

Why would they move to red states?

Citizens would have no reason to lie about it. Legal immigrants would have no reason to lie about it. The only ones who would lie are illegals, or they would just hide to make sure they're not counted. I don't see the problem.

Why would they move to red states?

There are 435 seats in the House of Representatives, and those are distributed based on populations. If California's population apparently shrinks because illegals don't get counted, then they would lose those seats to another state. I'm not saying that they would necessarily go to a red state, but illegal heavy states uniformly vote Democrat, so this would have the effect of Democrats losing seats and Republicans gaining seats on average.

Is that what the Constitution says about the count?

No but the Constitution does not restrict what may be asked. Folks are obviously free to claim whatever BS they feel like (Elizabeth Warren is a Native American simply because she says so even if her siblings are not) because the census, unlike a tax return, is a test that you can't fail.

Then they should also be exempt from taxation. No taxation without representation, right?
No really a problem seeing how most illegal immigrants work under the table so that no wages are being taken out, work as contract labor so that no wages are being taken our or work for substandard wages while using fraudulent social security numbers so that little to no taxes are being taken out.

Way to use the race card on a topic that has nothing to do with race. Well...nothing to do with race in the real world. Your imaginings are a different story.

That (bolded above) assertion is BS - see Texas and Arizona.

Does anyone here honestly believe that someone that is here illegally will admit to that, are you really that stupid?

I'm not disagreeing with you about illegal immigrants, just legal ones. Surely a legal immigrant residing in the US is due representation, as they pay tax and are invested in the nation?

Except my question was in reply to this

That's true, even though Arizona's senators are the worst. Still, the areas with the most illegals tend to have Democrat representation, even if that doesn't apply to the entire state. Still, Texas is way too close for comfort, with Trump only at 52% when Romney got 57% in 2012.
