Bus passenger uploads Facebook post showing border patrol boarding a bus and demanding ID papers

Since when did bus passengers need to proof their citizenship in order to ride a bus

( The video documenting this is part of a Facebook post, so I am sorry if I am not providing the right type of sources.)

The audio isn't great but how do you know they were trying to confirm citizenship status? Do you go around carrying your social security card and birth certificate on you? I suspect that 99% of American citizens don't. How do you even know that those were ICE officials? I noticed that the person recording stopped before they could be directly questioned by the officers and then would could get clearer and more direct audio. It seem more likely that these were regular police officers trying to look for outstanding warrants.

I witnessed this in 1984 on a greyhound bus on hwy 10 in Texas or AZ. All I showed them was my ID, but they did insist.
Under what pretext?

With no context how do we know why the ID's were being checked? Maybe someone missed a court date and officers were told that they were skipping town on the bus.

US Border Patrol???

Immigration hearings are often "forgotten". It appeared as though they found whoever they were looking for.

Did not watch it all. only to see who was on doing the checks. OK went back and found it.

A pop quiz or a Terry Stop is my best guess. Something like "we have reason to believe that a criminal may be using this bus to evade capture but we have only a very vague description of them - something about having a nose in the middle of their face, an elbow halfway up their arm and lacking any valid, state issued, photo ID".

I'm trying to remember if they were border patrol for sure, but I think they were. I believe is has to do with being within 100 or 150 miles from the border, there are some special laws about ID checks. I was not happy and asked what for? They made it pretty clear I could show it or I was getting off the buss.

Were they stating they would detain you?

I know a customs guy that claims anywhere within 100-150 miles (I forgot which) of a boarder, your constitutional right to due process is suspended for them. And international airports are borders. So basically he claims in my city, which has several international airports, the 14th is suspended throughout the entire city should he decide to act in that manner.

He claims people are freaked-out when they hear this, and he's right - I was!

Do I believe him? I'm not exactly sure. But he sounded pretty legit. So, maybe that's what happened to you and the people on the bus?

It would seem so. I assume it was going on before 1984 and since then.

US Border Patrol???

They may have been tipped off; had probable cause.

Was this at a border patrol checkpoint? If so, they definitely had authority to board the bus and checked ID's.
