Doctor detained by ICE after 40 years in the US

Next time, I’ll be sure to check with you if it’s OK to post a news story.

:roll

It's a fair observation though. It reminds me of that time a thread was started based on "the illegal immigrant doesn't have a criminal record" only to discover that that was a lie and that the illegal immigrant was actually a convicted felon who was guilty of distributing drugs.

MSM Caught Telling Another Lie To Protect Illegal Immigrant

Well I guess everyone thinks it's okay to just detain people for any reason as long as it ain't You?
What country do I live in?

Do you know what legal permanent residence is?
Whats in limbo?

The other poster said that was why people didn't apply for permanent citizenship. Yes maybe they have a green card but that is not permanent residency.

That would be limbo between illegal and permanent.

Sounds like people that don’t have their citizenry papers better be looking over their shoulders, eh?

Forty years, and never once considered becoming legal. He is a doctor...apparently intelligent, educated, and not without means. Why wouldn’t they change their status? Why wouldn’t they go to the authorities with attorneys and get this straightened out.

Why? Because no one ever told ICE to go get them before. No one ever wanted the laws actually followed.

Well, we have a president that seems serious on the issue. Maybe people will actually get their crap together now....you think?

Nah....they will just be victims and blame everyone else for their shortcomings

Did you miss the green card part? He is a legal permanent resident.

The fact that you don't know what the reason is, doesn't mean there wasn't one.

"We've been married. He has not done the citizenship route yet."
lol. These immigrants and their laxadaisacal approach to citizenship. Proof positive that most immigrants don't care about becoming citizens of this country. It's all about the benefits for them. How many times are we gonna see this kind of crap? "I was here for twenty years, and was married but I didn't give a damn about becoming a citizen even though I knew I head multiple felonious convictions".

A legal permanent resident is legal. Has nothing to do with illegals. Lol
I saw what the other poster said. But I'll tell you another reason some don't take us citizenship.
Did you know if you were born under a British territory and give up your British citizenship for American you do not qualify for redundancy (social security) while if you work in the US and British territory and stay a permanent legal residence of the US they can have both us S.S. and British pension.
So there are other reasons until now, when you could be jailed for 6 months before you even see a judge.

That sounds like a personal choice. This man was from Poland. I don't think that applies here.

So there can be a reason to hold someone for months before they even get a hearing?
Sorry I don't care if some is accused of the most heinous crime you can think of. That should not be okay.
I'm not defending this doctor or anyone in particular for all I know he's a child molester or murderer. I have a problem with the process.

It is a personal choice and many choose not to become citizens for lots of reasons besides crimnality. That was my point.
About the only difference with legal permanent residents and naturalized citizens is the right to vote. The right should love legal permanent residents. Shouldn't they?

Most likely it was a DUI in 2008 that triggered the detainment. However, he was charged with domestic abuse in 2013 and he had a couple of previous misdemeanors from years ago.

For those who had the idea that our immigration policies were strictly about keeping brown-skinned people out -- this is evidence that they're wrong. This guy is lily white.

Which may be the point for the arrest.

Racist policies always need cover.

Don't you think it is a little premature to post this thread?

Even the doctor doesn't know why is being detained.

Also it is a little surprising you posted a thread in which your racist friends can't come in and say this is only because of brown people.

That (bolded above) assertion is based on, exactly, what? Note that the doctor was never interviewed for this news story.

Simply because you don't know the reason for detention does not mean that there is not a completely logical reason. If the world's most perfect doctor was involved in some criminal activity (e.g. kiddy porn, embezzlement or selling the hospital's drugs) would he be likely to boast of it to family and friends?

They probably would he ran around with Hollywood liberals. Everyone in Hollywood knew about Harvey Weinstein and more than a few people were on to Kevin Spacey but that didn't stop people from feigning outrage about their sexual assault allegations that came their way.

But that's neither here nor there, I'm sure this doctor knew what was up.

OK, so enlighten us as to the reason since you seem to be the only smart person on this board.

If the doctor doesn't know why, how could you?

There is always more to the story than what is reported.

I will wait until a reason reveals itself before bashing ICE of the government.

Is it because the man is an immigrant why you think he couldn't have done anything wrong?

What does the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency do? Is that too difficult for you to figure out, even with all the internet at your fingertips? I mean, this isn't something that takes a Very Stable Genius to figure out.

And when it comes to the doctor not knowing, I'm not surprised - it's fairly uncommon (but not unknown) for people to be detained, but not be told why they are being detained...or - if they have been told - the explanation wasn't properly done or wasn't thorough enough or perhaps the mental state of the individual was such that the explanation simply didn't register. In other words, there's LOTS of reasons why a person honestly might not understand why he or she is being detained or arrested.

Not sure if you realize, but the risk for applying for citizenship is to be rejected because of some crap that might have happened when he was a minor (like what apparently got him detained).

You get denied citizenship, you have to leave- no reverting to permanent resident status.

But I’m sure you feel safer now, right?

He has the means to hire attorneys, and if he has to, he gets in line and waits

But then he is LEGAL...and he and his family no longer have to worry

Now, this is his issue....maybe deportation....being separated from family and friends, because they tried to skirt the rules

Kinda stupid if you ask me...

An old crime committed that ICE does not recognize as anything but a crime committed.
Now from what I understand if Gov Snyder pardoned him, that crime would go away.

Wood-TV reported Niec was convicted on one charge of destruction of property for less than $100 and receiving and concealing stolen goods when he was 17.

Niec reportedly pled guilty to the charges under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act that helps young offenders keep charges off of a criminal record, but ICE does not follow the state plea agreement.

OK, please tell us why this doctor was detained. The OP doesn't know. Maybe you do.

It was unpaid parking tickets because that is ICE's job now. How foolish can you make yourself look?

ICE acts as authority & power of its own and has detained US Citizens on a number of occasions.

Sergio Carrillo was born in Mexico and became a United States citizen in 1994. Yet immigration officials detained the Rialto resident at the Adelanto Detention Facility in San Bernardino County for three days last summer, despite his repeated assertions that he’s a citizen.

How did that happen? Federal immigration authorities had no record of his citizenship in its database – a common problem for people who were naturalized before 2008, according to attorney Jennie Pasquarella, the American Civil Liberties Union of California's director of immigrants' rights.

Authorities later discovered Carrillo's last name was incorrectly listed in the database as "Cabrillo," according to court filings.

Carrillo and the ACLU sued the federal government and 10 ICE officers in July; they reached a $20,000 settlement this week. The agreement is not an admission of liability or fault on the part of the government, according to the settlement.

Still, Immigration and Customs Enforcement kept Watson imprisoned as a deportable alien for nearly 3 1/2 years. Then it released Watson, who was from New York, in rural Alabama with no money and no explanation. Deportation proceedings continued for another year.

Watson was correct all along: He was a U.S. citizen. After he was released, he filed a complaint. Last year, a district judge in New York awarded him $82,500 in damages, citing "regrettable failures of the government."

On Monday, an appeals court ruled that Watson, now 32, is not eligible for any of that money — because while his case is "disturbing," the statute of limitations actually expired while he was still in ICE custody without a lawyer.
