Former CIA Director Michael Morell and former Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Michigan, say that Russia has continued its cyberattacks against the United States. "There is a perception among the media and general public that Russia ended its social-media operations following last year's election and that we need worry only about future elections. But that perception is wrong. Russia's information operations in the United States continued after the election and they continue to this day," they write in a Tuesday op-ed for The Washington Post. The two write that the issue should be of concern for everyone -- Republicans and Democrats alike. "Foreign governments, overtly or covertly, should not be allowed to play with our democracy." They write that the Russian government is still deploying effective tactics that target specific parties and politicians, much as they did by manipulating social media in the build up to the 2016 election.

Morell and Rogers warn that Russia's use of social media as a "political weapon" will keep moving forward, with more countries expected to follow suit, unless the U.S. intervenes. "The sanctions that the Obama administration and Congress put in place in the aftermath of the 2016 election are steps in the right direction, but they were not significant enough to check Russian President Vladimir Putin," Morell and Rogers suggest. They add, "True deterrence requires policies that prevent adversaries from achieving their objectives while imposing significant costs on their regimes. So far, we have done neither."

To date, not a word about these cyber-attacks by Russia from Trump, who has labeled US intelligence agencies "Nazis".

The CyberWars are an everyday thing, another thing that we do rather poorly.....it is not that Russia is so bad/good, it is that we cant/wont get our act together:

One of the greatest problems facing the military and other elements of the U.S. government that work in warfare and intelligence is the private sector's unwillingness to share information with them and their unwillingness to share with one another, particularly across government agencies that don't routinely interact. Dempsey referenced this in 2015, and experts maintain it's still a problem today.

"There's a lot of talk in the U.S. about public-private partnerships," says Nate Fick, a Marine Corps and Iraq War veteran who now serves as CEO of Virginia-based cybersecurity company Endgame. "Most of them are thin."

I thought Trump's definition of the competitive structure of international affairs was relatively clear in its message. No real need to agitate the population more than necessary. After all, we are quite well informed of the nonlinear war Putin has been and is still waging on us. I mean, this is not new or even very hard to see.

The United States must demonstrate its cyber warfare capabilities to help deter sophisticated attacks from Russia and other adversaries while building strategies on a battlefield still misunderstood by commanders and senior officials, a panel of defense experts told lawmakers Thursday.

"Cyber operations are a legitimate means of projecting national power, especially when proportionately supplemented by kinetic force, and we should advertise them accordingly," retired Navy Adm. James Stavridis, the former leader of European Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee in prepared remarks.
.
.
"Unwillingness to operate offensively in cyberspace is driven less by a fear of retaliation and more by a fear of compromising our intelligence community's sensitive tradecraft," he said.
.
.
.
"We're kind of on the beach at Kitty Hawk," Stavridis said. "We have some work ahead."

It must be pointed out that not only do we not do offense much, but our defense really sucks too, as is evidenced by the historical record, which makes the claim that there is some great apparatus to keep secret for more important future work a joke.

Doesn't left wing Jeff Bazos own Wa. Po.?

NYT and them are the FAKE NEWS we on the right are MOST CRITICAL of. :2wave:

Hybrid idiots with barrels of fake ink. What more could a left winger ask for.

Putin/Russia could lob nukes at the US, wipe out EVERY major US city with nukes, and Don ***** Grabber would still be singing the praises of Dear Vlad .......

The US continues a non linear economic war against Russia and China. All the time, for years, 24/7, sanctions, banking restrictions, all outright acts of war. You probably would prefer not to notice. You know, lots of people believe what they want to be true instead of the truth.

Trump has betrayed America but you’re too partisan to see that.

Flynn was making deals with Russia to build reactors. Trump had a signed intent to build a tower. They were all lying about meetings with Russians.

I am from the TTT, we try to see everything, the more educated we are the better we do.

You seem lost, did you think that this was a Trump thread or a Flynn thread?

Best of luck to you finding your way.

Trump, Flynn and Russia are all hopelessly tangled.

Russia is attacking us and our president does nothing because like Flynn he has financial motives. Trump sent Flynn to meet with Kislyak to remove sanctions on Russia. It’s not because Trump believes in love and peace. He sees opportunities to make money. He doesn’t care about our national security just his bottom line.

It’s you who are lost. You’ve forgotten you’re an American first and a conservative second. Liberals and conservatives should be united against common enemies. Russia and Putin are enemies. Trump has betrayed us.

United we stand divided we fall.

Having followed both of you examples quite closely, I really find your proposition comical. I do understand that a Russian KGB officer would be infuriated by the US totally having lost interest in his country after 1989, I cannot see much of an argument for nonlinear war by the US after the demise of the ussr. It all but ignored the country. That is not to say that foreign NGOs and businesses ignored the place. They didn't. But the defense community was interested only in a few major strategic policy errors like German's making themselves vastly dependent on one energy supplier. After Putin organised protection for Saddam in the dictator's negations with the UN.

As to China, assuming the USA was initiator to the frictions is bizarre. The US government actively supported China's development.

I just want to thank these two "former" intel experts and WaPo for channeling Captain Obvious. I mean, how else would WaPo's useful idiots find stuff to scream at the nighttime sky over?

To Rogue Valley: Do you think the Trump administration isn't doing something about these so-called cyberattacks?

Lol...yeah. That's totally all true. It's why Mueller hasn't found anything better than Flynn lying about a non-crime after the elections were over and some financial scamming by Manafort, which has nothing to do with anything you're talking about. Maybe you should offer your services to Mueller to help him out.

Wow, you really have no clue what a plea bargain is.

The reason Flynn’s confession is trivial is because he spilled the beans on The Don in exchange for being charged with a lesser crime and his son being let off the hook.

Trump is in serious trouble. Every intelligent person understands that.

Lol...if you want to believe that to help you sleep at night, snuggle into your pillow with your fairy tales all you want. I won't stand in your way.
