In the fetid fever swamps of the left the idea that Trump is an authoritarian who will soon be strangling our freedoms with government power is constantly being passed around. However, the facts just don't support that idea.

It became a lot less believable this week when Trump championed the end of Network Neutrality policies. He purposefully and willfully turned away from a system of strict government regulatory micromanagement of the Internet to the status quo ante, that of a lightly regulated Internet controlled by businesses and corporations and whoever else is involved. This gives corporations an incentive to continue to expand and develop the Internet and it's capabilities.

In fact, all across the board Trump has been reducing the government's power over businesses, corporations, and all the rest of us by severely cutting back on regulations in general.

It's not the sort of thing an authoritarian does.

Exactly, the difference between regimes liklike Kim Jong and free Democracies is that Kim Jongs tyrannical goverment imposes consumer and market protections. That’s a good point.

There are plenty of authoritarians that are corporatists too they are called oligarchies. They tend to increase the power of corporations to gouge consumers.

Again we see leftists pointing fingers and making the claim DJT is authoritarian when in reality it was BO who was guilty of the very same thing.

No surprise there. President Trump was elected to reduce government and to get rid of the people in power.

The Republicans are no less authoritarian than the Democrats. The only difference is they give the "authority" to local governments (who they support even if they push draconian and unconstitutional social policies) and private wealth (even if private companies are defrauding the public and destroying competition). The Dems may be big government, but at least they generally use their power to protect the vulnerable and consumers.

You bought that rhetoric?

1. There is already significantly more broadband capacity in this country than is being used.
2. Broadband investment actually increased under net neutrality.
3. Net neutrality existed before a rule was made for it in 2015 and it is largely why the internet is the way it is today.
4. This is not just a repeal of net neutrality, but a government intrusion that is using the state to protect the interests of internet providers over consumers since the FCC can act to protect an internet provider but not a consumer.

More than any President in recent memory, perhaps ever, Trump's actions have been screaming "Power to the People!"

Satellite image of North Korea at night enjoying the consumer protections you describe.

Seems to me that the Trump Administration is a pretty transparent operation.

Allowing free enterprise to flourish is what allows innovation of technology and access for the regular guys.

AT&T proposed cell phone's to the FCC in the 40's. The FCC stopped it. We are about 60 years behind the technological advances we could be enjoying due to government regulation.

<snip>
In 1947, AT&T proposed that the FCC allocate a large number of radio-spectrum frequencies so that widespread mobile telephone service would become feasible, which would also give AT&T an incentive to research the new technology.

The agency’s response?

The FCC decided to limit the amount of frequencies available in 1947.

The limits made only twenty-three phone conversations possible simultaneously in the same service area and gone was the market incentive for research.

In a way, we can partially blame the FCC for the gap between the initial concept of cellular service and its availability to the public.

Yes, it would seem him ans Mussolini have much in common then ...

So Mussolini who was a Fascist and sought more control of industry to government.

Trump who is a capitalist and seeks to return control of industry to the owners.

How does seem to even remotely support what you posted?

As a President and basic human being, Trump is a failure.

And yet the numbers say you are wrong.

What causes this cognitive disconnect in your view?

You're suffering under a delusion.

Who enforced Net Neutrality before the 2015 regulation?

If it was already working absent government regulation, why is government regulation needed?

There are several examples of authoritarian leaders that have supported neoliberal and free market policies for example Augusto Pinochet in Chile.

While my country Sweden have a lot more regulations, stronger welfare state and higher taxes than USA and at the same ranks at the top of both the democracy index and the World Press Freedom Index.

Sweden also for example is the best country for business according to Forbes.
