And the BIG winner in Alabama is...............................

I guess we'll find out come 2020, eh? Regardless, Trump still lost tonight.

Oh, that's not fair and you know it! When the 2nd least popular Presidential candidate on record loses to a likeable candidate in three years, you'll be able to claim victory by default!

Crocidile tears

Well, he's not wrong, now is he? All you illiterates who insist on calling a hebephile a pedophile might as well be wiping your unwashed peasent asses with the dictionary! Giving the internet to lowborn plebians was clearly a mistake.

The big winner in Alabama was Jones and the Democrats. When deep red Alabama is going blue, Trump, Pence and their band of pedo sympathizers are in deep ****. Keep hitching your wagon to those nutters, republicans.

It actually was the better result for the republicans. If Moore won, he would have been an albatross around their neck. As it is, there is very little chance of Jones keeping his seat next year. It also diluted Bannon, and let them not get associated with 'we are the party of pedophiles' It's pretty much a full year, so the point 'The RNC wanted to support a man who liked 14 year old girls when 32' won't resonate with the base.

The danger for the Republicans actually is not only a re energized democratic base, but Bannon dismissing the political issues with Moore, and attributing the lose entirely to the sexual issues, and doubling down on his threat of targeting all the incumbent Republicans with people further to the right, in conjunction with a more energized Democratic base. The chaos that would cause in the Republican party would disrupt things.

Nah, the biggest winners in Alabama were the Americans who reside there, including the ones who voted for Moore. This victory is a small step towards stopping the Trump/alt right agenda.

While stopping Trump seems less of an achievement to me, as that seemed quite natural, if Democrats actually came to grips with why the lost against only 25 percent. Therefore it is only of passing interest that they won here.

That it was over an alleged sex scandal they won is notable.
That it was achieved with massive and continuous ad hominem mud slinging from virtually the whole media establishment is noteworthy.
That it was not achieved over policy debate but populist portrayal of policy is scary.

You're not wrong. Without the kid-touching stuff, Moore wins going away.

That said, I can't help but wonder if some of the conservative element in Alabama didn't feel a bit patronized by having Steve Bannon and Louie Gohmert tell them not to let out-of-state interests tell them how to vote. I'm hoping this is more a rejection of Bannonism, which is far more frightening than Trumpism. Steve Bannon is pure evil.

The exit polls had 29% of the people saying their vote was to support trump, while 20% said it is to reject trump. Now, how many of those 20% would reject Moore anyway is not known.

I like how people can just get away with calling others pedophiles when they don't even in fact qualify for such a thing. The stupidity for this brand of forum is so laughable sometimes.

Yes, we see a lot of that here, but not just here, it's nationwide. It's a shaming thing, and after last night's win by Jones, it's almost certain that we're going to see it expand to other elections and sitting officials. Because it worked. I'm like you -- I think we've lost a modicum of integrity when so many go around calling names and repeating alleged acts as if the person were already convicted. It's a step backward in intellectual honesty.

I don't really think those who took part understand how this type of thing will come back to bite them as well. It always does. I've said many times that I would not vote for Moore, but not because of the recent allegations, which, in my opinion, were a witch-hunt.

We just witnessed something very interesting -- a trial in the court of public opinion determining the outcome of a political race.

Don't be bothered by the folks that call the names - they're still so incensed that Trump won that they'll demonize anything/anyone Trump supports, like Moore. I think it's the only thing they can do.

And, to be fair, politics is dirty business - it always has been.

We live in very interesting times.

I'm legitimately impressed by the maturity of that tweet. Are we sure Trump's the one who wrote it? ;)

Someone hacked his tweets? Wants to give him a bad name?

I am sure that since it actually has no typos, that he probably didn't even type it. ... That was the only tweet for the evening, so someone probably put that out there, and hid his phone.

Say hello to the new brand of political warfare of the 21st century. Every politician is doing it these days and it doesn't seem like its going to stop.

At this point the GOP has to start thinking of exit plans if their wise -- no, I won't hold my breath.

They've got to figure out how to distance themselves from Trump. Tonight was the memo on Trumpism as a philosophy: it's over.

It's only going to get worse too. Trump has nothing to show for all his boasting, and people are starting to wake-up and see HIM as the elitist, sitting around doing nothing but telling them how to vote and making a mockery of the American political system.

I do not see the Republican party coming out of this intact. They've lost fiscal conservatives who are genuinely against running up the debt. They've lost moderate conservatives who really don't care if their neighbors get married. Trump will rip them to pieces if they don't support him - but candidates will lose if tied to him. Trump is not the kinda guy to take a back seat and stay out of trouble when he can stir the pot. And they will lose the alt.right wing and bible Conservatives if there is no Trump stamp or approval.

If there is a lasting effect from this, it's not in Alabama; Moore's reputation will have done significantly more damage to the people who flocked to Alabama to support him than they will have done to him. Bannon might have some awful ideas, but the average voter cares far more about a grown man trying to **** teenagers than immigration policy or law & order. This is simply the nature of the human mind; abstract concepts will always pale in comparison to something visceral and emotionally charged.

What no one seems to ever mention is that there are a lot of people who had visceral experience. This will have an effect on the Republican brand around the entire country. Talk about reaping the whirlwind.

No doubt we will find out soon. I can't wait for his next twitter storm.

I don't think any of the kids on here are capable of making said distinction, apart from throwing slurs and slander in random order.

I love actual, intellectual debate, but sometimes I feel that coming here to DP is one of the most wasted searches for such discussion in my life.

There's a nice core here of people who actually do like discussion. Better than the other boards which tend to slant on one direction. I don't like preaching to the choir, or listening to the latest talking points, which is wht you get on boards like that.

Yes and no on the "impressed" component. There are two sublte (and very Trumpesque) jabs included in what is otherwise a subdued tweet.

You know what? If that tweet even indicated a change towards subtlety in his trash talking, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

At this point I think interesting is undercutting it these days. We are currently in a political circus and the ringmaster quit over a few months ago.

Yet when you find that core, it gets infiltrated by the rather long list of Trolls and sycophants...

Talking shop is a great aspect of joining a site like this one, but its getting hard to retain the appreciation for it with such interference.

Its my understanding that Jones won by a thin margin. I would caution those who see his win as a mandate, or a sign of real change.

No - that was a 29 point swing - from Trump who won by 28% to Moore who lost by 1%. Since AL went for Trump with the largest margin, it's pretty clear that there have been some radical changes in voter's minds between November 2016 and yesterday.

I'll be honest with you, the forum does seem to have lost quality lately. The current political climate seems to have driven everyone insane. There's more than a few posters on here that were significantly better than they are now, and there's at least a dozen or so of our really great regulars that left after Trump won. Sometimes I get a bit sad when I think about the change, but I still stand by my claim that we're the best damn politics forum on the English side of the internet.

Public burning!, must be the battle cry!

That's the spirit!

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD TRUMP! SKULLS FOR THE SKULL WALL!

Who? I don't remember that at all.
