There is a flaw in the political party / success correlation. For example, it could just as easily be said that inner cities are bastions of liberalism. Obama didn't raise Baltimore out of poverty, and Trump isn't going to raise coal country out of poverty.
Cities have always had their problems due to the high population density. But, when it comes to poverty per capita, smaller cities/towns in red states are usually among the worst:

Towns in Arizona, Texas, Montana, New Mexico, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Louisiana lead the pack.
